Neither is automatically better for every winter outage. A portable power station is quiet and produces no combustion fumes, but its stored energy is finite and cold can limit charging or output. A gas generator can keep supplying power while fuel is available, but its exhaust makes outdoor placement and careful operation essential. Choose by matching your critical appliances’ starting and running wattage to the exact unit, then checking how you will replenish it, the weather limits, and whether you can operate it safely.
How the two options compare
| Consideration | Portable power station | Gas generator |
|---|---|---|
| Exhaust and indoor air | Battery and solar power stations do not give off combustion fumes, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. They still have to be used according to their product instructions. | Produces combustion exhaust, including carbon monoxide (CO), which can be deadly. Operate only outdoors in a safely sited location. |
| How long it can supply power | Limited by stored energy and the connected load. Recharging requires an available compatible source, such as grid power or suitable solar input. | Can continue supplying power while fuel is available and the unit is maintained. A universal runtime or fuel-use figure is not established; both depend on the generator and load. |
| Output and appliance fit | Check watt-hours (Wh) for stored energy and continuous and surge watts (W) for output. Account for motor startup demands and simultaneous loads. | Check the exact generator’s running and starting wattage against the appliances you plan to run at the same time. |
| Cold-weather operation | Charging and output limits vary by model and battery type; a unit may tolerate cold discharge but prohibit charging at the same temperature. | Starting and weather protection depend on the model, fuel, maintenance, and manual. No comparative winter performance test is established here. |
| Siting and noise | Has no combustion exhaust and can generally be used indoors as a battery appliance if its instructions permit. Keep it within its temperature and moisture limits. | Must operate outdoors, at least 20 feet from buildings, with exhaust directed away from windows, doors, and vents. It may be noisy; no comparative noise measurement is established here. |
| Replenishment and upkeep | Needs a compatible recharge source. Winter solar input may be uncertain; follow the manufacturer’s charging and storage guidance. | Needs safely stored fuel and maintenance. The CDC says not to store gasoline indoors; follow the generator’s manual and labels. |
Choose by the loads you need to keep running
Before choosing either device, list the critical appliances and their nameplate running watts, motor startup or surge watts, expected hours of use, and whether they will run simultaneously. A refrigerator, lights, communications equipment, medical equipment, and a furnace blower impose different demands. Check appliance manuals and the exact power equipment ratings rather than assuming a device will handle a particular load.

Understand a power station’s capacity and output
Watt-hours describe stored energy; watts describe the rate at which a unit can supply power. Compare the load’s running and startup needs with the station’s continuous and surge ratings. A rough runtime estimate can start with usable capacity divided by the load in watts, but it is not a guarantee: inverter losses, temperature, duty cycle, and any reserve reduce the practical result. State the assumptions if you calculate a figure for a particular setup.

Match generator output to simultaneous demand
Compare the generator’s running and starting wattage with the total load you expect to run at once. Motors can need extra power to start, so a generator that appears adequate based only on running watts may not start every planned appliance. Fuel consumption and runtime depend on the specific generator and its actual load; do not treat a general estimate as a promise for your outage.
What about heating during a winter outage?
Neither a power station nor a generator should be assumed to heat a whole home safely. Separate the electricity needed by a furnace’s blower and controls from the heat produced by the furnace. Whether backup equipment can run those electrical components depends on their actual load, startup demand, and the backup unit’s ratings.

Do not use a gas stove, oven, grill, or generator indoors to heat a home. The EPA warns against trying to heat a home with combustion appliances such as gas stoves or ovens and grills. If indoor temperatures become unsafe, the CDC’s winter-storm guidance advises seeking shelter when conditions are too cold or too hot.

Cold-weather limits are model-specific
Cold-rated discharge does not mean a device can also be charged in freezing conditions. Keep a power station within the temperature range specified for the exact model, and warm it only as its manufacturer permits. Do not improvise with a heater or place it near a flame or combustion exhaust.

One manufacturer example: Jackery Explorer 1500 Ultra
Jackery’s Explorer 1500 Ultra product information lists charging from 32°F to 113°F and says charging stops automatically below freezing. It lists discharging from 5°F to 113°F and limits output to 1,000 W below 14°F. These are manufacturer-stated limits for this model, not independent test results or a standard for other stations.
Battery chemistry guidance is not a substitute for the model manual
Jackery’s general temperature guidance, updated July 2, 2026, lists LiFePO4 products for discharge from −10°C to 45°C and charging from 0°C to 45°C; for NCM products, it lists discharge from −10°C to 40°C and charging from 0°C to 40°C. Jackery cautions that ranges vary by battery type and says to follow the specifications for the specific model. These figures are Jackery guidance, not universal limits for all brands.

Generator safety: outdoor siting is non-negotiable
Carbon monoxide is odorless and can kill quickly. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says it receives reports of nearly 100 portable-generator CO deaths per year in the United States; that is an annual U.S. total, not a per-generator rate. In its February 19, 2026 winter-storm release, the CPSC states: “NEVER operate a portable generator inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed or other enclosed spaces.” Opening a window does not make indoor operation safe.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Place a generator outdoors at least 20 feet from the house or other buildings, and direct exhaust away from windows, doors, and vents, as the CDC advises.
- Install working battery-operated or battery-backup CO alarms on each level of the home and outside separate sleeping areas, following CPSC recommendations.
- Use individual heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords when connecting appliances. Do not operate equipment when wet; follow the manual for snow, rain, electrical-shock hazards, and any approved cover.
- Store fuel safely. The CDC says not to store gasoline indoors. Follow the generator’s instructions for fueling, inspection, and maintenance.
- A generator’s CO shut-off feature is an added safety feature, not permission to run it indoors or closer to the home.
Make an outage plan before choosing
- List essentials. Record each device’s running watts, startup demand, and expected operating hours. Mark which devices must run together.
- Check the exact product. Compare that load with continuous and surge output, usable battery capacity or generator ratings, temperature limits, and the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Plan replenishment. For a station, identify a compatible charging source and whether it will be available in winter conditions. For a generator, plan safe fuel storage and realistic refueling.
- Set up safely. Confirm that you can site a generator outdoors at the required distance and use appropriate cords, or that a station can remain within its permitted temperature and moisture conditions.
- Consider outage duration and fallback. Decide how long you need to power essentials and what you will do if charging, fuel, or safe operating conditions are unavailable. If you cannot safely run the equipment or indoor conditions become unsafe, seek an appropriate shelter.
These sources are U.S.-focused; local rules and product availability may differ elsewhere. Without a specific load list, outage duration, weather, fuel access, siting conditions, and product model, no universal runtime comparison or single winner can be established.
