Choose a portable CD player by checking the discs you own, how you listen, and how the player is powered. Features vary by model: CD-R or MP3-CD support, anti-skip protection, rechargeable power and Bluetooth are not guaranteed across the category.
Check which discs and files the player supports
Start with the formats printed in the exact model’s specifications. Support for a standard audio CD does not automatically mean a player can read CD-R or CD-RW discs, or MP3 files burned onto a data disc. If you use any of those, look for each format by name before buying.

If you plan to walk or commute with the player, check whether the model lists anti-skip protection, sometimes called ESP or electronic skip protection. Some players offer selectable electronic skip protection, but the feature name alone does not guarantee uninterrupted playback in every situation. Compare the power and charging arrangement
Portability depends on how the player gets power as much as on its size. Check whether the model uses an included rechargeable battery, replaceable batteries, USB charging, or requires mains power. If it charges over USB, confirm the connector and whether a charging cable or power adapter is included in the listing.
Playback-duration figures are manufacturer or retailer claims unless an independent test reports how they were measured. Match the player’s connections to your headphones or speakers
Wired headphones
Check for a 3.5 mm headphone socket if you want to use wired headphones. Some portable CD players offer only this connection rather than Bluetooth, so do not assume wireless audio is included. Which? portable CD player buying advice

Bluetooth headphones or speakers
If you want wireless listening, verify that the exact model has Bluetooth and that it transmits audio from CDs to headphones or speakers. Bluetooth implementations can differ; the presence of the word “Bluetooth” in a listing does not by itself establish how it works with CD playback.

A speaker or stereo with an aux input
A compatible player can connect to a speaker through a 3.5 mm cable when both devices have matching connections, according to Which?. Check the player’s output and the speaker or stereo’s input before buying a cable; the connector must suit both ends.

- How you move: Check whether anti-skip protection is present and selectable, along with any stated conditions.
- Power: Identify the battery type, charging method and any included accessories; read runtime figures as claims unless independently tested under stated conditions.
- Headphones: Look for a 3.5 mm socket, Bluetooth transmission, or both, according to your setup.
- Speakers or stereo: Match the player’s output to the intended device’s input.
- Extras: Pay for features such as a built-in speaker or radio only if you expect to use them.
For a straightforward wired setup, prioritize the disc formats you own, the power arrangement you can maintain, and a headphone socket or compatible speaker output. For listening on the move, add anti-skip protection to the checks; for wireless listening, confirm CD-audio transmission over Bluetooth on the exact model rather than relying on a generic feature label.
