Use your phone’s hotspot for occasional connectivity if your plan includes enough hotspot data and the battery impact is acceptable. Choose a dedicated portable 5G hotspot for frequent or longer sessions, several devices, or when you want to keep your phone free for calls and other use. A dedicated hotspot adds hardware and a separate compatible data plan; it does not automatically provide faster service.
How the two hotspot options work
A phone hotspot shares the phone’s cellular connection over Wi-Fi. A dedicated portable hotspot is separate cellular hardware that connects to the network and shares its connection with nearby devices. Verizon explains the distinction between a dedicated hotspot device and a phone’s built-in hotspot feature in its mobile hotspot device FAQ.

Compare the trade-offs
| Factor | Phone hotspot | Dedicated portable 5G hotspot |
|---|---|---|
| Convenience | Uses a device you already carry, provided your phone plan allows hotspot use. | Requires separate hardware and a compatible data plan. |
| Phone battery and availability | Hotspot use draws on the phone’s battery and can leave it less available for other use. | Uses its own battery, so it can serve connected devices without drawing power from the phone. |
| Data and cost | May use hotspot data included with your phone plan; check the allowance and what happens when it runs out. | Costs include the device and a compatible hotspot plan; compare the plan’s allowance and terms. |
| Connected devices | Device capacity and limits depend on the phone and carrier. | Capacity varies by model. NETGEAR specifies up to 32 connected devices for its Nighthawk M7; that figure is not a general limit for all hotspots. See the M7 product page. |
| Speed and reliability | Depend on cellular coverage, signal, congestion, phone capability and plan rules. | Also depend on coverage, signal, congestion, hardware and plan rules. Dedicated hardware is not inherently faster. |
| Travel | Check roaming, hotspot terms and coverage for the phone plan at your destination. | Check the exact model’s supported bands, carrier or eSIM compatibility, destination coverage and data terms. |
When a phone hotspot is the better choice
- You only need to connect a laptop or another device occasionally.
- Your phone plan allows tethering and has enough hotspot data for your typical sessions.
- You prefer not to buy or carry another device, and you can manage the phone’s battery use.
AT&T says hotspot use depends on a plan that includes hotspot data. Its tethering guidance recommends turning the hotspot off when it is not in use and keeping a portable battery pack available. Battery-pack connector and output needs depend on your phone.
When a dedicated hotspot makes more sense
- You regularly work or travel for long stretches using cellular Wi-Fi.
- You need to connect several devices and want to keep your phone available and charged.
- You are willing to manage a separate device and data plan in exchange for a dedicated connection.
Device capacity is model-specific: NETGEAR lists up to 32 devices for the Nighthawk M7, not for every hotspot. The same manufacturer advertises eSIM plans in 140+ countries for that model. Treat that as a product-specific claim, not a guarantee of service everywhere; confirm current destination coverage and plan terms on the M7 product page.

Check plan limits before choosing
Do not assume that a phone plan’s general data allowance is also its hotspot allowance, or that a dedicated hotspot uses the same terms as your phone. AT&T says the phone plan must permit hotspot data. Verizon offers separate plans for hotspot devices; check its hotspot plan information and your own plan documents for current allowances and what happens after a limit.
Compare what you already pay for your phone plan with the full cost of a dedicated device and its compatible plan. The useful comparison is not just the hardware price: it is the hotspot data available, any limits after that data is used, and whether the device works with your carrier.

Will a portable 5G hotspot be faster?
Not necessarily. Both options rely on cellular service, so coverage, signal strength, network congestion, hardware capability and plan rules all matter. A dedicated hotspot may suit sustained or multi-device use, but that is not proof it will deliver higher speeds in a particular place. T-Mobile’s published comparison describes mobile-hotspot speed ranges as variable, not as an individual speed guarantee: T-Mobile’s mobile hotspot comparison.
What to verify before buying for travel
- Check the exact hotspot model’s supported cellular bands and confirm that your intended carrier supports it.
- Check coverage and data terms for each destination, including roaming or eSIM requirements.
- Confirm the plan’s hotspot allowance and any conditions that apply after you use it.
- Check the device’s battery and Wi-Fi capacity against the number of devices and length of sessions you expect.
Broad country-count claims do not establish coverage or usable data terms in every destination. For example, NETGEAR advertises eSIM plans in 140+ countries for the Nighthawk M7; verify current availability and conditions for the places you plan to visit.
