On Linux, “port forwarding” can mean three different things: allowing the kernel to route packets between interfaces, redirecting selected traffic with a firewall/NAT rule, or tunneling an application connection through SSH. Choose based on the path the traffic needs to take; enabling net.ipv4.ip_forward alone does not create a port mapping or publish a service.
First, identify the traffic path
Before changing settings, determine what is connecting to what:

- A service on the Linux host: A client connects to a service running on that same machine. This is primarily a listener and input-firewall question, not necessarily port forwarding.
- A machine behind the Linux host: The Linux system passes or redirects traffic to another device. This may require routing, firewall policy, and a port mapping or address translation.
- A connection through SSH: An SSH client creates a tunnel, and the SSH server connects to the requested destination. This is application-level tunneling, not router-style NAT.
These paths have different controls and failure points. A forwarding rule cannot help if the destination service is not listening or otherwise reachable.

How the Linux forwarding methods differ
| Method | What it does | Best fit | Key control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kernel IP forwarding | Passes IP packets between network interfaces. | A Linux machine acting as a router or gateway. | net.ipv4.ip_forward is documented with a default of 0 (disabled); changing it resets network parameters to host or router defaults. Linux kernel IP Sysctl documentation. |
| firewalld forward-port or masquerading | Maps selected ports or translates network addresses. | Redirecting traffic through a Linux firewall. | Runtime and permanent configurations are separate; behavior can depend on firewalld version and backend. firewalld zone documentation. |
| SSH forwarding | Tunnels an application connection through an SSH server. | Reaching a service through an SSH host, often with access controlled by SSH configuration. | The server can restrict forwarding destinations and remote listeners. OpenSSH sshd_config manual. |
Use kernel IP forwarding when Linux must route packets
The kernel setting net.ipv4.ip_forward controls whether IPv4 packets are forwarded between interfaces. The Linux kernel’s IP Sysctl reference describes it as “Forward Packets between interfaces” and lists the default as 0, or disabled.

Enabling this setting is a routing change, not a general “open a port” switch. The kernel documentation warns that changing it resets all configuration parameters to host defaults (RFC 1122) or router defaults (RFC 1812). A working route also depends on the network topology and firewall policy. There is no single forwarding command that is correct for every distribution or network.
Use firewalld to map selected traffic
firewalld’s forward-port feature maps a port to the same or a different port on this host or another host. The zone manual describes mapping a port to “the same port on another host” or to another port on the same or another host. Its command documentation supports TCP, UDP, SCTP, and DCCP, and allows a destination port and address; specifying a destination address implicitly enables IP forwarding in firewalld. Check the installed firewalld version and the zone you intend to change before applying a rule.

- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
Forward-port is not the same as masquerading
A forward-port rule redirects selected traffic by port. Masquerading translates private network addresses behind a public address. They solve related but different problems; use the one that matches the traffic path rather than treating either as a generic port-opening feature.
Keep runtime and permanent settings straight
firewalld maintains runtime and permanent configurations. A change made without --permanent affects runtime and does not survive a reload or restart. Permanent changes are loaded into runtime on reload or startup. Temporary timeout-based rules cannot be combined with --permanent. These behaviors are described in the firewall-cmd manual.

Choose policy scope for the direction of traffic. Zones generally address input filtering for an end station. firewalld policies can filter input, output, and forwarding traffic, which matters when the host routes for other devices or filters traffic for virtual machines and containers. See the firewalld policies manual.

SSH forwarding carries an application connection through an SSH session. With local forwarding (-L), a listener on the SSH client side sends connections through the SSH server to a destination. With remote forwarding (-R), the listener is on the server side and connections travel back through the tunnel. Neither mode makes the SSH host a general-purpose IP router.

Server policy can restrict what clients may forward. OpenSSH documents PermitOpen for limiting destinations requested by local forwarding and PermitListen for limiting remote forwarding listener addresses and ports. GatewayPorts may further restrict remote listener addresses. Consult the OpenSSH sshd_config manual for the server’s applicable settings and syntax.

Check these points when forwarding does not work
- Confirm the intended path. Determine whether traffic ends at the Linux host, passes through it, is redirected by firewalld, or is carried through SSH.
- Check the service and destination. Verify that the service is listening at the intended destination and that the Linux host can reach it.
- Check the firewall scope and saved state. For firewalld, verify the zone or policy handling the traffic and whether the rule exists in runtime, permanent configuration, or both.
- Limit exposure. Permit only the necessary ports, sources, destinations, and SSH forwarding targets instead of exposing a broader service or listener.
- Be cautious with direct rules and nftables. firewalld notes that an
ACCEPTin a direct rule may not by itself accept packets through its nftables ruleset. Prefer a rich rule when it expresses the intended policy, and consult the firewalld direct-rule manual for backend-specific caveats. - Check the target versions. firewalld documentation describes an nftables forward-port limitation in one case that requires Linux 5.5 or later. That note is not a universal requirement for every setup; verify it against the installed kernel, firewalld release, and backend.
