Hanami is a credible alternative when a component-based architecture and explicit separation better fit the project. For narrower needs, Sinatra, Grape, and Roda are candidates to investigate—but verify their current capabilities and Ruby-version requirements in each project’s documentation before choosing.
How to choose a Ruby web framework
Start with the shape of the application, then weigh how much structure and functionality you want the framework to provide. Consider these questions:
- What are you building? A conventional HTML application, a modular full-stack application, a compact service, or an API-first product may call for different approaches.
- How much should the framework integrate? An integrated framework can provide a documented path through common development tasks. A modular approach lets a team assemble or use components more selectively.
- What dependencies will the team maintain? Account for components the framework supplies and those the project must select and configure.
- What does the team already know? Familiarity affects onboarding and day-to-day development; evaluate the framework against the team’s experience and conventions.
- Which Ruby versions are supported? Check both the framework’s stated requirements and the Ruby branch’s maintenance status before committing.
Ruby on Rails: an integrated full-stack starting point
Rails is a strong first framework to evaluate for a conventional full-stack web application when the team wants an integrated approach and a documented learning path. The official documentation includes installation, hands-on tutorials, in-depth guides, and an API reference. That makes it possible to assess both how to get started and how to answer more specific implementation questions from the project’s own materials.
Rails is not automatically the right choice for every service or API. Compare its conventions and integrated approach with what the application actually needs, and confirm the current Rails release’s Ruby requirements in the official documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Hanami: a component-based full-stack alternative
Hanami describes itself as a full-stack Ruby framework made from smaller, single-purpose libraries: Router, Action, View, DB, and Assets. The project says these components can be used independently or together. That architecture is worth evaluating if the team wants to choose how framework pieces fit together rather than begin with one integrated structure.
Hanakai announced Hanami 3.0 on June 30, 2026. The release announcement highlighted first-class mailers, built-in internationalization, Minitest, and performance and developer-experience improvements. This is a dated release announcement, not a guarantee about the latest release today; check Hanami’s current release notes and Ruby requirements before selecting a version.

Sinatra, Grape, and Roda for narrower requirements
A RubyLearning comparison guide characterizes these frameworks in broad terms. Those descriptions are useful for forming an initial shortlist, but they are secondary-source summaries rather than verified feature audits. Review each framework’s current documentation before relying on a specific capability or version detail.
| Framework | Initial fit to investigate | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Sinatra | A compact routing DSL for a lightweight service, according to the RubyLearning comparison. | Current routing and application capabilities, dependencies, and Ruby compatibility in Sinatra’s own documentation. |
| Grape | An API-focused framework with endpoint and parameter DSLs, according to the RubyLearning comparison. | Current API features, dependencies, and Ruby compatibility in Grape’s own documentation. |
| Roda | A routing-tree framework with granular plugins, according to the RubyLearning comparison. | Current routing and plugin details, dependencies, and Ruby compatibility in Roda’s own documentation. |
These descriptions do not establish a universal ranking or show that one framework is faster, smaller, or more widely adopted than another.

Check Ruby compatibility and maintenance status
Framework fit is only part of the decision: the Ruby runtime must also be appropriate for the application. The Ruby core maintenance page lists Ruby 4.0 and Ruby 3.4 in normal maintenance and Ruby 3.3 in security maintenance. Runtime lifecycle information changes, so check that page when making the decision, then verify the selected framework’s supported Ruby branches and the application’s deployment environment.
- Identify the Ruby branch used by the project or deployment environment.
- Check its current lifecycle status on the Ruby maintenance page.
- Confirm that the framework release and the libraries it needs support that branch.
- Test the intended combination in the application’s development and deployment environments before adopting it.
Is there a clear performance winner?
No controlled performance comparison among Rails, Hanami, Sinatra, Grape, and Roda is established here. Do not treat unsupported speed or memory rankings as benchmark results. If performance is a deciding factor, compare the candidates under representative application workloads and deployment conditions rather than extrapolating from framework labels.

ScreenshotNeo for capturing Ruby documentation or project pages
If you need screenshots of a framework’s documentation or project pages for a report, issue, or internal reference, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It is separate from Ruby framework selection; it can capture web pages as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. A single GET request accepts a URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://rubyonrails.org/ -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Every feature is available on every plan.
