The Eclipse Foundation’s 2024 survey found Spring/Spring Boot at 63%, Jakarta EE at 60%, and MicroProfile at 32% among 1,409 participants. These figures describe technologies used to build cloud-native applications by that survey’s respondents—not universal market share. For a new application, start by deciding whether you need an application framework, a runtime, or a standards-based platform; then weigh deployment needs, compatibility, ecosystem, and team experience.
What are the most popular Java frameworks?
In the Eclipse Foundation’s 2024 cloud-native Java survey, Spring/Spring Boot was the most frequently reported technology in the group of figures provided: 63%, compared with 60% for Jakarta EE and 32% for MicroProfile. The survey included 1,409 participants and ran from 19 March to 31 May 2024. Its promotion used social channels, foundation and Jakarta EE websites, newsletters, blogs, and community partners, so it should not be read as a random census of Java developers or as a universal market-share measurement. Eclipse Foundation, 2024
Those percentages also do not mean that all three choices are direct rivals. Jakarta EE and MicroProfile are specification-based ecosystem technologies that can work alongside or underpin frameworks. The 2024 report specifically cautions that Spring/Spring Boot and MicroProfile are not necessarily competing technologies, and that Spring/Spring Boot and MicroProfile rely on some Jakarta EE specifications. Eclipse Foundation, 2024
A separate survey counted runtimes, too
A different Eclipse Foundation/Jakarta EE Working Group Cloud Native Java Survey, conducted 11 July to 23 August 2024 and based on over 170 respondents, reported Spring Boot at 38%, Tomcat at 33%, Quarkus at 32%, and WildFly at 31% for a question covering runtimes. That is a broader category than application frameworks, and the survey had a different participant count and question scope; its numbers should not be merged with or ranked directly against the 1,409-person survey. The same smaller survey reported Jakarta REST API usage at 70%, CDI at 68%, and Persistence/JPA at 66%. These are API usage results, not framework adoption shares. Eclipse Foundation/Jakarta EE Working Group, 2024
How the main Java options differ
Spring Boot
Spring Boot is a strong starting point when you want the Spring ecosystem and a ready application setup. The official project describes it as a way to create stand-alone, production-grade Spring applications, with embedded servers and opinionated configuration. That positioning makes it worth evaluating when you want the framework to supply a conventional application structure without requiring a separately managed application server for every deployment. It does not make Spring Boot the right choice for every project. Spring Boot project

Quarkus
Quarkus’s official project page positions it for Kubernetes and cloud-native Java. Consider it when those deployment contexts are central to the application, then validate its fit against your libraries, build and operations workflows, and target environment. The evidence here does not provide a comparable benchmark for startup time, memory use, or throughput, so those should be measured with your application rather than assumed from the framework’s positioning. Micronaut
Micronaut is a JVM framework with official documentation and ecosystem resources. It belongs on a shortlist when its framework model and integrations suit the application, but the survey evidence summarized here does not establish a comparable adoption percentage for Micronaut. Micronaut project

Jakarta EE and MicroProfile
Jakarta EE and MicroProfile are specification-based technologies, not simply interchangeable framework products. An implementation provides the APIs and behavior defined by a specification, and frameworks may use or work with parts of those ecosystems. In the smaller 2024 survey, Jakarta REST, CDI, and Persistence/JPA each appeared in reported API usage; that illustrates why a standards platform or API may be part of an application without being its sole framework choice. Eclipse Foundation, 2024 Eclipse Foundation/Jakarta EE Working Group, 2024
Tomcat and WildFly
Tomcat and WildFly appear in the smaller survey as runtimes or implementations. They may matter when choosing where and how an application runs, but they are not direct equivalents to every application framework in the comparison. Identify whether you are selecting an application programming model, a runtime, or both before comparing them. Eclipse Foundation/Jakarta EE Working Group, 2024

How to choose a Java framework or platform
- Classify the decision. Determine whether you need an application framework, a runtime, a standards platform, or a combination. Do not choose between labels that refer to different layers as if they were identical products.
- Match the deployment context. Consider your application architecture and target environment. Spring Boot’s official description emphasizes stand-alone applications and embedded servers; Quarkus highlights Kubernetes and cloud-native Java. Treat these as project positioning, not proof of measured performance. Spring Boot Quarkus
- Check compatibility and migration effort. Inventory the Java and Jakarta APIs, existing libraries, persistence and web layers, and deployment assumptions the application already uses. A change that requires substantial migration may not be worthwhile unless it addresses a concrete need.
- Evaluate integrations and ecosystem needs. Check whether the framework or platform supports the integrations, APIs, and operating model your project depends on. Jakarta EE and MicroProfile can complement frameworks rather than forcing an either-or decision. Eclipse Foundation, 2024
- Include the people who will operate it. Account for team familiarity, available support, and the skills needed to maintain the application after launch. A framework’s adoption figure cannot tell you how quickly a particular team can deliver or support your system.
- Measure operational requirements on your own workload. If startup, memory, throughput, or another operational measure affects the decision, run comparable tests with the same application behavior, dependencies, configuration, and environment. The cited surveys do not establish a head-to-head performance ranking.
What the popularity evidence can and cannot tell you
- It can indicate reported use within a defined survey. Spring/Spring Boot leads the larger 2024 cloud-native survey figures presented here, while Jakarta EE and MicroProfile also show substantial reported use. Eclipse Foundation, 2024
- It cannot establish universal adoption. The larger survey used multiple promotional channels and is not described as a random census; its percentages should be interpreted within its respondent population and question.
- Different survey questions produce different comparisons. The separate survey included runtimes, had over 170 respondents, and reported Spring Boot at 38%; that result is not directly comparable to the larger survey’s 63% figure. Eclipse Foundation, 2024 Eclipse Foundation/Jakarta EE Working Group, 2024
- The figures are dated. These are 2024 survey findings, not current release, support-window, or geography-specific adoption data.
