If Wi-Fi got worse after you added a second router or mesh unit, check where that device sits and how it connects to the main router. A wireless mesh point placed in the weak-coverage area may have a weak link of its own. Put it partway toward the problem area, then check the system’s connection test. A separately configured router or access point needs its own setup guidance; it is not automatically interchangeable with a mesh node.
Why a second device can leave you with poor Wi-Fi
A second unit can only extend coverage if it receives a usable connection from the main unit. Putting a wireless mesh node in the dead zone may give it poor service to pass along. Walls, metal objects, cabinets and other obstructions can weaken the signal between units; nearby devices can also add congestion, particularly in the 2.4 GHz radio space. NETGEAR outlines these performance factors in its Wi-Fi performance guidance.

The placement of the main router matters too. TP-Link recommends a central, open location and advises avoiding cabinets, multiple walls, metal objects and high-powered appliances. These are manufacturer recommendations, not a guarantee that one spot will work in every home. See TP-Link’s router placement guidance.
How to find a better spot for a wireless mesh point
- Start with the main router. If practical, put it in a central, open place rather than behind furniture or inside a cabinet. Avoid locations where its signal must pass through several walls.
- Move the mesh point toward the weak area, but not all the way into it. Choose a spot partway between the main unit and the area where coverage drops. Google recommends this approach in its guidance for placing Wifi devices.
- Check the connection between units. Use the system’s app or mesh test after moving the point. TP-Link also recommends checking the satellite’s signal from the source unit in its Deco placement guide. A strong signal on a phone near the node does not, by itself, confirm that the node has a strong link back to the main router.
- Change one thing at a time. Keep the node in the open and away from walls, metal objects and possible interference sources. Test after each move so you can tell whether that change helped.
Placement and spacing recommendations are system-specific. For example, TP-Link’s Deco guide gives its own spacing guidance; do not treat that as a universal distance for every mesh system or home.

When wired backhaul or a different setup makes sense
Use Ethernet backhaul if your system and home support it
A wired connection between mesh units avoids relying on a wireless link through the home. TP-Link describes Ethernet backhaul as more stable and faster than wireless backhaul for its Deco units; results and availability depend on the equipment and wiring.
Do not configure every second router like a mesh node
A compatible mesh node is designed to join its system. A standalone router or access point may need a different configuration, and the setup instructions for the exact model should determine what to change. Linksys discusses using mesh for multi-router home coverage and notes that an unused nearby router’s Wi-Fi can be disabled or placed on another channel; that is product-specific guidance, not a universal recipe. See its mesh WiFi connectivity FAQs.

Some setups use a wired connection between separate routers or access points. Motorola describes one example using MoCA, and notes that separate networks may require selecting the second network name when moving between them. That example does not apply automatically to mesh systems; see Motorola’s MoCA setup guidance.

What to check before changing equipment
- Compatibility: Confirm that a proposed mesh point works with the existing system.
- Backhaul: Determine whether the second unit connects wirelessly or by Ethernet, and whether the wireless link is strong at its current location.
- Obstructions and layout: Consider walls, metal objects, cabinets and the route the signal takes through the home.
- Device role: Identify whether the second unit is a mesh node, extender, access point or separately configured router before changing settings.
There is no single placement statistic that predicts improvement across different homes and equipment. Use your system’s connection test and compare coverage after each deliberate placement change.
