A snooker cue is typically built with a narrower tip than an American pool cue, but “pool cue” can mean different things: English pool and American pool use different equipment conventions. Choose for the game you play most often, and treat published cue dimensions as typical ranges rather than rules.
How snooker and American pool cues differ
The clearest typical difference is tip diameter. A specialist cue guide gives snooker cues a typical 9–10 mm tip and American pool cues an 11.2–13 mm tip. These are buying-guide ranges, not mandatory specifications. The same guide treats English pool separately, so American pool dimensions should not be applied to every game called pool. World Cue Sports’ cue guide describes the distinctions.

| Feature | Snooker cue | American pool cue | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical tip diameter | 9–10 mm, per World Cue Sports | 11.2–13 mm, per World Cue Sports | Typical ranges, not formal rule specifications. |
| Typical length and weight | About 58 in and 16.5–20 oz, per World Cue Sports | About 58.5 in and 18–21 oz, per WPA Pool’s secondary comparison | Approximate figures from different sources; ranges overlap and are not equipment rules. |
| Common joint format | 3/4 joint is popular | Two-piece cues are common | These are common designs, not requirements; preference and transport matter. |
| Game fit | Designed around snooker’s smaller balls and long table | Designed around American pool’s larger, heavier balls | English pool is a separate case and may suit a snooker cue better than American pool. |
Tip size is a useful starting point, not a guarantee of accuracy, spin or comfort. The sources describe typical designs and preferences, not controlled tests comparing performance. Balance, feel and the player’s technique also matter.

What the snooker rules actually require
The WPBSA rulebook sets a broad baseline rather than a typical tip diameter: “A cue shall be not less than 3 ft (914 mm) in length and shall show no change from the traditional tapered shape and form, with a tip, used to strike the cue-ball, secured to the thinner end.” The 2024–25 Snooker and English Billiards rulebook was released in September 2024; the WPBSA rules page identifies its site as the source for the current version. The commonly quoted 9–10 mm tip range is a market convention, not a WPBSA requirement.

Can you use a snooker cue for pool?
Sometimes—but first identify which pool game you mean. World Cue Sports says a snooker cue can sometimes work for English pool. For regular American pool, a purpose-made American pool cue is generally the better fit: its larger, heavier balls can make a snooker cue feel underpowered or put extra strain on it. That is a practical equipment caution, not a claim that every cue will fail or feel the same.
Which cue should you choose?
- Identify the game. Decide whether you mainly play snooker, English pool or American pool. “Pool cue” alone is not specific enough to settle the choice.
- Start with the cue made for that game. For regular American pool, look at American pool cues; for snooker, choose a snooker cue. A snooker cue may be an option for English pool, depending on your preference.
- Compare feel and practical fit. Try the cue if possible, paying attention to balance, tip size and how it feels in your stroke. Typical figures can narrow the options but do not establish what will suit an individual player.
- Choose a format you can carry and store. One-piece cues prioritize continuity and traditional feel; two-piece cues are common in American pool and easier to transport; 3/4 cues are popular in snooker and English pool as a compromise.
- Check the competition rules if you play competitively. The WPBSA baseline applies to snooker; verify the rules of the relevant pool organization rather than assuming its equipment requirements match snooker’s.
Why “pool cue” needs a qualifier
English pool and American pool are not interchangeable equipment categories. The cue guide gives separate conventions for the two pool variants, while the secondary pool-versus-snooker comparison supplies approximate American pool dimensions. If you are shopping, check that a listing names the intended game; otherwise, a stated tip size or weight may be difficult to interpret.
