Neither game is established as a story prerequisite for the other, so the best first choice depends on which premise draws you in.
How the two games differ
| Game | Core premise | What play centers on | Release |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pony Island | A player is trapped in limbo inside a malevolent, malfunctioning arcade machine. | Solving puzzles, repairing broken code, and exploring the software system behind the arcade game. | January 4, 2016 |
| The Hex | At the Six Pint Inn, six video-game protagonists become suspects in a planned murder. | Exploring the inn and the characters’ memories, which unfold in different game genres, to uncover the would-be murderer and victim. | October 16, 2018 |
These are separate games by Daniel Mullins Games, not editions of the same title. The official Steam developer page lists both.

Which game should you play first?
Choose Pony Island for puzzles and a concentrated premise
Pony Island is the better first pick if you want one unsettling game interface to explore and enjoy fiction that makes software and code part of the experience. Daniel Mullins Games describes it as “a suspense puzzle game in disguise.” Its official Steam listing says progression involves repairing broken code and exploring the arcade machine’s software system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose The Hex for an ensemble mystery and genre changes
Pick The Hex if you would rather follow several characters and piece together a murder mystery through their histories. The official Steam listing says each flashback plays out in a different genre, sometimes blending multiple genres. The game’s official press kit describes the same inn-based mystery and genre-shifting flashbacks.

If you have no preference
Pony Island is a reasonable starting point: it was released first and has the more concentrated premise. The available official descriptions do not establish that you need to play either game before the other.
How long does each game take?
The Hex’s Steam listing estimates roughly six hours for a first playthrough. The official Pony Island listing does not give a comparable completion-time estimate, so there is no sound basis here for claiming that one is shorter than the other.
