Polymarket’s public data interfaces provide useful inputs, but they do not prescribe an official acceleration indicator—and the evidence does not show that one predicts profitable trades.
First separate the market’s settlement TWAP from its token price
“TWAP” can refer to two different things here. A crypto market’s resolution specification may define a time-weighted average price used to determine the outcome. Separately, Yes and No outcome tokens have prices that change as participants trade and revise their probabilities. A detector built from token-price history measures movement in those market prices; it does not automatically measure, reconstruct, or forecast the settlement TWAP.

Before collecting data, open the live market specification and establish its exact resolution rule and current settings. Do not assume every crypto market or market duration uses the same reference window. The exact TWAP configuration for every active duration is not established in the sources available here, so verify it for the individual market rather than relying on a general rule.

What data can you collect?
Find the market and its outcome tokens
Use Gamma market and event records for discovery. Find the active market, then retain its stable market and event identifiers and the token ID for each outcome you intend to study. Yes and No are separate outcome tokens; requesting history for the wrong token will not describe the outcome you think it does. The Polymarket Institute’s data guide explains Gamma discovery and gives an example of retrieving a complete market record.

Retrieve timestamped token prices
Use the CLOB price-history interface with the specific outcome token’s token_id. The historical response contains price observations and timestamps. The Institute guide documents retrieval through /prices-history; consult the live reference for request details and preserve the returned timestamps and values as supplied.
Add trades as context
The Data API exposes trade history with market, user, and time filters. Its v2 reference describes timestamp conventions, cursor pagination, and unavailable-field semantics. Keep the fields the endpoint supplies that are relevant to your study—such as market ID, token ID, timestamp, side, price, and size—and record missing values as missing, not as zero or an inferred value. Follow the API’s cursor and time-window rules so pagination does not silently omit records. See the Polymarket Data API v2 documentation.
- Store the market’s resolution text and the time you checked it alongside the data.
- Keep the original timestamps and document any timezone conversion or resampling.
- Record which outcome token each price series represents.
- Do not silently fill gaps, discard repeated timestamps, or treat an unavailable field as a measured zero.
How can you define acceleration without implying it is official?
There is no canonical Polymarket acceleration formula in the cited API documentation. One exploratory design is to compare the rate of change of a short-window, time-weighted token price with the rate of change over a longer baseline. This is an analyst-defined detector, not a Polymarket metric or validated trading signal.

For a token price series p(t), calculate a rolling time-weighted average over a window of length W:
TWAP_W(t) = (1/W) × integral from t−W to t of p(u) du
Weight by the time each observed price represents, rather than by the number of records. Otherwise, a burst of observations can dominate simply because the feed recorded more points during that interval. Choose and report how you handle gaps and irregular observation spacing before calculating the average.

Then estimate a slope over a stated interval Δ, for example:
S_W(t) = [TWAP_W(t) − TWAP_W(t−Δ)] / Δ
Compare the short-window slope with a longer-window slope. A simple signed difference is:
A(t) = S_short(t) − S_long(t)
A large positive or negative difference can flag a change in the direction or pace of movement, depending on how the series and sign convention are defined. It does not establish that the move will continue. Set the short and long windows, sampling frequency, evaluation interval, missing-data treatment, and alert threshold explicitly; there is no source-backed universal choice for those settings.

Which detector design fits the question?
| Approach | What it can show | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Price history alone | Whether the token-price series’ short-window slope differs from its longer baseline. | Simple to reproduce, but it does not explain whether a move coincided with meaningful trading activity or a thin book. |
| Price history plus trades and book context | Whether the price change coincides with observed trade counts or size and available spread or depth. | Provides more context, but trade-direction inference from public feed changes can be unreliable; those extra inputs do not validate an acceleration strategy. |
| Sampled historical observations | Broad patterns over the selected observation intervals. | Convenient for a retrospective series, but moves between samples may be missed and sampling choices affect the result. |
| Event-level collection | More detailed timing of observed records and changes. | Requires careful timestamp, pagination, and missing-data handling; greater detail alone does not make the signal predictive. |
Compare designs on the same held-out markets and time periods. Also check whether a chosen threshold behaves similarly across markets with different durations; a threshold that only works for one market or sampling setup may be capturing that setup rather than a stable effect.

Keep price movement separate from trading activity. Alongside the token-price series, examine trade counts and sizes, available book spread or depth, and time remaining in the market. A sharp price change in a thin book or on sparse prints may be noisy; do not count it as robust evidence merely because the calculated slope is large.

Do not infer which side initiated a trade from a public book update alone. A May 15, 2026 study of Polymarket order-book microstructure reports that public-feed-inferred trade direction agreed with on-chain ground truth only approximately 59% of the time in its comparable sample. That figure is specific to the authors’ sample and method, not a general accuracy rate for every market or dataset. The authors recommend using on-chain OrderFilled events when trade direction is needed. Read the study, “The Anatomy of a Decentralized Prediction Market: Microstructure Evidence from the Polymarket Order Book”, with those limits in mind.

How do you test whether a detector is useful?
- Freeze the definition. Write down the windows, sampling frequency, threshold, gap treatment, market inclusion rules, and intended alert before evaluating outcomes.
- Keep evaluation data out of rule selection. Choose settings on one set of markets or periods, then test on held-out markets and later or otherwise separate periods. Avoid using future observations to compute a signal that is supposed to be available at an earlier time.
- Compare against simple baselines. At minimum, compare the detector with the market’s own current token price or implied probability. A complicated feature set is not useful if it does not improve on what the market price already says.
- Include execution assumptions. Report fees, spread, slippage, and false positives under the conditions you model. A signal that appears useful before trading costs may not remain so after them.
- Report failures as well as alerts. Show how often alerts were followed by the outcome you defined, how often they were not, and whether performance changes across markets, durations, or periods.
A useful warning comes from Gregory Young’s July 31, 2026 OpenMarket preprint: its out-of-sample walk-forward logistic model using 43 microstructure features did not beat, and slightly underperformed, the probability implied by Polymarket’s own order book. The paper also reports −0.116 normalized payoff units per attempted trade for its simulated positive-EV strategy under its stated fee and slippage assumptions. These are results from that particular dataset and methodology, not proof that every possible detector fails. They do show why an apparent acceleration pattern needs a fair out-of-sample comparison and realistic costs. See “OpenMarket: A Synchronized Polymarket–Binance Dataset for High-Frequency Prediction-Market Research”.
What can a detected acceleration actually support?
A reproducible detector can support a narrow observation: under a stated sampling and window design, a token-price series changed at a different rate over a short interval than over its chosen baseline. It can help identify periods for further analysis. By itself, it cannot show that the settlement reference is accelerating, explain why traders moved the price, establish that a move will persist, or demonstrate a profitable strategy.
Keep the market’s resolution rule, token-price data, trade context, and test results distinct in your notes. That separation makes it possible for another analyst to reproduce the measurement without mistaking an exploratory alert for a venue-defined signal or a forecast.
