Pause on stale or contradictory market data, an uncertain order or fill, an unavailable market, API throttling, or a breached strategy limit. Then reconcile orders, trades, fills, and exposure before resuming. Pausing new orders is not the same as cancelling resting orders.
Stop new orders when the bot cannot trust its inputs or state
Polymarket’s official order guide says to confirm that a market is accepting orders before placing one. Orders also need to meet the market’s current tick size and minimum order size. If the bot cannot establish any of those facts, it should fail closed: do not submit a new order until the missing or conflicting state is resolved. Polymarket’s Place Orders guide

- Market unavailable or unknown: Pause if the market is not accepting orders or the bot cannot determine its current state.
- Market data stale or inconsistent: Pause if the feed disconnects, timestamps stop advancing, the order book cannot be reconstructed, or the latest tick size is unknown.
- Order validation fails: Do not submit an order that violates the current tick-size or minimum-size requirements.
- Account risk limit reached: Pause when an operator-defined position, portfolio exposure, loss, drawdown, or error-rate limit is breached.
Polymarket describes outcome shares as costing between 0 and 1 USDC, with the winning outcome redeeming for 1 USDC per share after resolution; positions can also be sold before resolution. That range is not a risk limit: the bot still needs to track how much it has committed and what exposure remains in live orders. Polymarket FAQ

Polymarket’s market WebSocket feeds publish order-book, price-change, last-trade-price, and tick-size-change events. A bot should maintain current state from the feed rather than treating an old snapshot as indefinitely valid. If it loses the feed or cannot confidently rebuild the book, stop new submissions until the market state is current again. Polymarket Real-Time Data documentation

The feed’s continued connection alone is not proof that the bot has a usable book. The relevant check is whether the bot can establish a coherent, current market state and validate the order against it. If not, a strategy should not trade on cached prices as though they were current.
Stop and reconcile when an order’s outcome is uncertain
A request timeout or error does not tell the bot whether an order was accepted, filled, partially filled, or cancelled. Stop sending replacement orders until the bot queries the order and reconciles related trades and fills. Otherwise, a retry can duplicate exposure. Polymarket’s order-management documentation describes querying and managing orders; cancellation should be followed by a state check rather than treated as proof that exposure is gone. Some orders can be pending during a matching delay and temporarily unavailable for cancellation. Polymarket documents a 250 ms taker delay for selected crypto and finance up/down markets; the order is revalidated after that delay. This is specific to those markets, not a universal delay across Polymarket. Do not blindly duplicate a pending order or assume a cancellation can take effect immediately. Polymarket Order Lifecycle

Polymarket states that all its orders are limit orders. The order type determines whether an order may rest, execute immediately, or be rejected; it does not remove the need to track actual fills and remaining exposure. Polymarket Order Lifecycle

- BUILT FOR YOUR MARKET, FUTURES, STOCKS, FOREX, OPTIONS & CRYPTO: 4X is a mindset and process journal, not a strategy tool tied to one instrument. The plan, the trade log, the deep dive and the weekly review work the same whether you trade ES, EURUSD, SPY or BTC. Traders use it across all five markets every day.
- THE 2026 EDITION, REBUILT FROM TRADER FEEDBACK: Same trusted system, better in every way. An extra daily page for more room to log the session. Weekly reviews now grouped with each week's trades, so no more flipping back and forth. Crisp, darker print that's easy on the eyes after hours on a screen. A Quick-Start QR that scans straight to step-by-step instructions.
- NOT A NOTEBOOK, A COMPLETE 12-WEEK SYSTEM: Start with a one-time 9-part Trading Plan (your market, setups, risk rules and discipline checklist). Then twelve identical weeks: five Daily Logs, five Deep Dive trade pages, and a two-page Weekly Review. 189 guided pages, roughly 80 trades. Guided prompts walk you through every step. You never stare at a blank page.
- RATE YOUR EXECUTION, NOT YOUR RESULT: Your platform tracks the P&L. Nothing tracks the why. Log energy, sleep and mindset before the open; grade every trade A to F on whether you followed your plan, not on whether it won; then face the pattern every weekend with START / STOP / IMPROVE / CONTINUE. That review habit is the edge. You're 42% more likely to hit a goal you've written down.
- BUILT TO LAST, ARRIVES GIFT-READY: Vegan-leather hardcover, 100gsm bleed-resistant paper, two ribbon markers and an elastic closure band. Bound to lay flat so you're not fighting the spine while you write. 189 pages, 5.75" x 8.5", carries in a bag. Ships in a premium gift box: the gift every trader in your life actually wants.
| Order type | Documented behavior | Risk-control implication |
|---|---|---|
| GTC | Remains on the book until filled or cancelled. | Track it as continuing exposure and reassess it when market conditions or limits change. |
| GTD | Remains live until its specified expiration; the guide documents an expiration security buffer. | Use only when the order should remain live through its chosen window; check current expiration rules. |
| FOK | Fills entirely immediately or cancels. | Prevents a partial fill, but may not execute if available liquidity is insufficient. |
| FAK | Fills available quantity immediately and cancels the remainder. | Reconcile the actual filled amount before calculating exposure. |
| Post-only | Rejected if it would match immediately. | Can enforce maker-only behavior, but does not cap the position or portfolio exposure. |
Order behavior and the GTD expiration security buffer are described in the Order Lifecycle documentation; verify current rules before relying on them in a live strategy.
Back off when the API throttles or degrades
Polymarket says requests may be delayed or queued under IP-based limits, and CLOB trading endpoints have separate per-signer token-bucket limits. A bot should treat throttling, repeated request failures, or delayed responses as a reason to pause or back off—not as a cue to increase retries. On recovery, it must reconcile orders before resuming submissions. Polymarket Rate Limits
Rank #4
As shown on the official page accessed October 7, 2026, the general CLOB limit is 9,000 requests per 10 seconds. The same page lists separate endpoint limits, including these trading examples:
| Endpoint | Burst limit | Sustained limit |
|---|---|---|
POST /order |
5,000 requests per 10 seconds | 120,000 requests per 10 minutes |
DELETE /cancel-all |
250 requests per 10 seconds | 6,000 requests per 10 minutes |
These are live documentation values, not recommended request rates or guaranteed capacity. Rate limits can change; check the current limits page and design for throttling rather than operating at the published ceiling.
Best Value
Stop if the strategy’s risk budget or economics no longer pass
Set account-level limits before enabling live trading, and check them before each order and after each fill. Suitable operator-defined controls include a maximum position, a portfolio exposure cap, a loss or drawdown boundary, and a maximum tolerated error rate. The reviewed Polymarket documentation does not prescribe universal values for these thresholds, so their numbers must come from the strategy and account—not be presented as Polymarket rules.
Recalculate expected value using the current fee parameters, too. Polymarket says taker fees apply only on certain markets, vary by category and share price, and do not apply to makers. A bot should read the parameters for the specific market rather than hard-code one fee schedule for all markets. Polymarket Fees
Keep pausing, cancellation, and shutdown separate
- Pause: Block new order submissions while keeping the monitoring and reconciliation process available.
- Cancel: Request removal of one or more resting orders, then check order state and reconcile fills. A request is not confirmation.
- Shutdown: Stop execution and potentially data processes as well. If resting exposure needs attention, perform the cancellation and reconciliation workflow before stopping the processes needed to do it.
An emergency cancellation path is useful, but it is not a complete risk control: matching delays can temporarily prevent cancellation, and cancellation requests themselves are subject to API limits. Order Lifecycle and Rate Limits

Quick Recap
Resume only after the state is reconciled
- Restore trustworthy market data. Confirm the feed is updating and the book and tick-size state can be reconstructed from current events. Real-Time Data
- Resolve uncertain orders. Query order state and reconcile trades and fills; do not infer that a timeout, retry, or cancellation request settled the order. Manage Orders
- Recalculate exposure and limits. Include remaining live orders and actual filled quantities, then check the operator-defined account limits.
- Revalidate the market and order constraints. Confirm the market accepts orders and use its current tick size and minimum order size. Place Orders
- Check fees and service health. Use the current market fee parameters and ensure the API is no longer throttling or returning unresolved errors. Fees and Rate Limits
- Enable submissions deliberately. Resume only after the checks pass; keep the stop conditions active for every subsequent order and fill.
