Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Open-source Android apps can cover many everyday Google jobs—from maps and email to notes, keyboards, weather, and file sharing—without reproducing Google’s full ecosystem. The strongest choices depend on what you need: some work locally, some connect to existing services, and a few require extra setup or paid hosting.
Here are practical alternatives, with the trade-offs that matter before you switch. The recommendations reflect app descriptions and one writer’s hands-on impressions, not controlled feature or reliability tests. Android Authority’s September 2026 comparison is a useful starting point, not proof of parity with Google.

Which Google apps have polished open-source alternatives?
There are credible options across a broad range of categories. “Replacement” here means an alternative for a particular task, not necessarily a drop-in substitute with the same account sync, coverage, or integrations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Google app or function | Open-source alternative | What it does well | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel Weather | Weather Master | Weather summaries, widgets, configurable sources, and an expressive design. | Forecast quality varies by provider and region; no general accuracy claim is established. |
| Google Clock | Chrono | Can make dismissing an alarm require completing a prompt or game. | Check its current maintenance and compatibility with your device before relying on it for alarms. |
| Chrome | Solipsism Browser | Offers a side rail and a choice of Chromium or Servo engine. | The Servo option needs a separate Antares Engine download, adding setup complexity. |
| Quick Share | LocalSend | Transfers files between devices on the same wireless network. | Devices need to be on the same network for this workflow. |
| Gboard | HeliBoard | Includes dictionary support, glide typing, emoji search, themes, and clipboard history. | Check language support and privacy behavior for your language and device. |
| Google Keep | NotallyX | Provides notes, organization, search, and multilevel subtasks. | It does not automatically reproduce Keep’s seamless Google-account access across devices. |
| Google Tasks | Tasks.org | Supports recurrence, tags, reminders, and either Google Tasks sync or a separate task system. | Cloud sync on Tasks.org’s servers is paid, according to Android Authority’s comparison. |
| Google Photos | Lavender Photos | Offers offline photo viewing, albums, tagged search, folder locks, and Immich backup support. | A viewer is not the same as hosted photo backup; Immich adds a self-hosting or service decision. |
| Google Maps | OsmAnd | Useful for activity-specific mapping, road-surface details, and GPX workflows. | The comparison notes missing traffic overlays and some restaurant and attraction information. Android Auto support is included in the paid Play Store version. |
| Gmail | Thunderbird | Can handle multiple providers over IMAP or POP3; the comparison describes no AI features. | Changing the mail app does not change the email provider. Gmail users can still use Google’s mail service. |
| Google Play Store | Aurora Store | Provides another way to access the Play app catalog and, according to the comparison, can be used without a Google account. | App provenance and updates still matter; it is not a risk-free fit for every installation workflow. |
This is a selective roster, not a complete catalog or guarantee that every app is equally polished on every device. F-Droid’s catalog spans additional categories including email, notes, tasks, news, phone, and SMS apps. Browse the F-Droid package catalog to explore beyond these examples.

Which replacements have the biggest practical trade-offs?
Maps: OsmAnd trades local discovery for activity-focused detail
OsmAnd is a better fit when you value mapping for activities, road-surface information, and GPX workflows. It may be a weaker substitute if your daily routine depends on traffic overlays or a broad directory of restaurants and attractions. Android Auto support is available in the paid Play Store version, as noted in the comparison. Decide based on the mapping tasks you actually use, rather than treating any one app as a universal replacement.
Photos: a gallery is not a backup service
Lavender Photos can serve as an offline viewer with albums, tagged search, folder locks, and support for Immich backups. Those features do not by themselves provide Google Photos-style hosted backup or remote access. Using Immich means choosing a self-hosted setup or service, so consider that separately from choosing a gallery app.

Notes and tasks: choose how much sync you want
NotallyX covers notes and organization, including multilevel subtasks, but does not supply Keep’s default Google-account cross-device experience. Tasks.org offers a choice: connect to Google Tasks or use a separate task system. Its cloud sync on the app’s servers is paid, according to the cited comparison. Local use, Google-linked sync, and paid hosted sync are different arrangements; pick the one that matches your preference.

LocalSend is suited to transfers when both devices share a wireless network. Solipsism Browser’s engine choice adds flexibility, but choosing Servo entails downloading Antares Engine separately. These are manageable constraints if they fit your routine, but they make each app less of a one-for-one swap.

How should you install and maintain open-source apps?
F-Droid describes its catalog as free and open source, with a client for searching, installing, and receiving updates; it also says downloads do not require an account and that the project is volunteer-run. Those are the project’s own descriptions and stated mission, not an independent security certification. Read F-Droid’s About page.
Distribution channel and update history deserve attention. Privacy Guides’ guidance on obtaining applications warns that packages in F-Droid’s official repository can lag behind developer updates and that the repository may include older or unmaintained apps. Check an app’s recent release activity and follow its developer’s stated official channels where appropriate.

For example, You Apps lists GitHub releases, F-Droid, and IzzyOnDroid as official channels and asks users installing from GitHub or IzzyOnDroid to verify signing-certificate checksums. Consult You Apps’ official site for its current instructions. Follow the relevant developer’s own guidance rather than assuming every source or package is interchangeable.
How much should popularity or download figures influence your choice?
They can show interest, but they do not establish quality, privacy, or suitability. F-Droid’s 2025 annual report gives a total of 18 million app downloads and updates, a figure the project says is extrapolated to protect user privacy; it is not a count of unique users. Read the F-Droid annual report.

In an Android Authority poll of 872 respondents, 32% selected Google Maps as the Google app they would find hardest to replace; 15% selected Google Keep and 15% the Play Store. That publisher poll is not representative of all Android users, but it underlines that some categories are harder to leave than others. See the poll results.
