In a 2024 account of a 2023 study, the researchers’ prototype reportedly matched a down jacket’s warmth at one-fifth its thickness in a −20°C test. That result is promising, but it does not show that commercial garments will perform the same way or that the fibre is ready for mass production.
What is polar-bear-inspired fabric?
It is a synthetic textile fibre designed around the structure of polar-bear hair, not fabric made from bear fur. The 2023 study reported an encapsulated aerogel fibre (EAF) with a porous chitosan core and a thin thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) outer layer. The core is intended to trap insulating air, while the coating reinforces the fibre and protects its porous interior. The 2024 Chemistry World report says the core’s porosity can be tuned.

The reported manufacturing sequence freeze-spins chitosan solution into continuous fibres, freeze-dries the core, and then coats it with TPU. This design echoes the hollow interior and denser outer structure of polar-bear hair; it does not reproduce the biological material itself.
What has the fibre demonstrated?
The figures below are demonstrations reported by Chemistry World in its 2024 coverage of the 2023 study. They describe experimental fibres and a prototype garment, not standardized guarantees for products sold to consumers.
#1 Best Overall
- Aerogel Insulation Hydrophobic Mat of High Temp.
- The mat is made of high quality aerogel, size: 12’’x12’’, thickness:10mm(3/8inch)
- This version of Spaceloft aerogel is great for Cryogenic temperatures of -328°F to 1200°F
- Unless it is rated for high temperature, don't go putting a torch to your Aerogel
- It is Hydrophobic, which means it will not absorb water. So, moisture from condensation is not a problem.
| Demonstration | Reported result | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Stretch and recovery | Fibres returned to their original length after being stretched to 1,000% strain. | Strong stretch recovery was demonstrated in the reported test; the account does not establish performance over a garment’s lifetime. |
| Load-bearing | A single 500 μm-wide fibre lifted a 500 g weight. | A striking fibre-scale strength demonstration, not a measure of how much a finished garment can carry. |
| Thermal performance | A knitted prototype sweater was reported to provide warmth comparable to a down jacket at one-fifth the thickness in a −20°C test. | A study-reported comparison under that test condition, not proof of equivalent warmth across different garments, temperatures, or constructions. |
| Washing | The prototype showed no degradation after one conventional machine-wash cycle. | Evidence of surviving one wash, not repeated-laundering durability. |
The same report describes the fibres as dyeable, but the available account does not establish how their colourfastness or appearance would hold up over extended wear and repeated washing.
Is it warmer than down?
The reported result is narrower than a general claim that EAF is warmer than down: a knitted EAF sweater provided comparable warmth to a down jacket at one-fifth the thickness in a −20°C test. The report does not establish that the garments had otherwise equivalent construction, weight, or coverage, nor that the result applies to other conditions. It is best read as an encouraging prototype comparison, not a replacement claim for down insulation.

- 30' = 142.5sq/ft, each roll is 57" wide x 30' long
- The light weight and compression strength of Spaceloft make it an excellent option for areas where weight and space may be issues.
- It is hydrophobic, which aids in preventing corrosion under insulation (CUI), which could lead to costly repairs.
- Application temperatures are greater than Cryogel Z with a range from -460°F (-270°C) to 390°F (199°C)
- Delivers up to 5 times the insulating performance of competing products.
Can the fibre be washed?
The prototype garment reportedly showed no degradation after one conventional machine-wash cycle. That is a limited washability demonstration. The report does not establish how the fibre or garment fares after repeated cycles, so it cannot yet support assumptions about ordinary long-term laundry care.
Why isn’t it on the market yet?
Scaling and process continuity are major obstacles in the reporting. Materials scientist Xuetong Zhang contrasted an aerogel-fibre wet-spinning rate of about 20 metres per minute with rates of up to 5,000 metres per minute for traditional fibres. These are the rates cited in the 2024 report to illustrate a scale-up gap, not a survey of every textile process.

The reported process also needs to connect continuous spinning with batch drying. Zhang said: “Additionally, although continuous spinning and batch drying have been established for aerogel fibres, a feasible strategy to bridge the two processes to realise a fully continuous process remains elusive.” Without a workable continuous production route, promising laboratory and garment prototypes do not automatically translate into economical, high-volume textile manufacturing.
Can you buy clothes made from it?
The reporting describes research demonstrations and manufacturing challenges, but does not establish that consumer garments made from EAF are on sale. It identifies no retail product or named manufacturing partner. Treat the fibre as a research-stage textile rather than a currently available alternative to down or other insulation.

How this work differs from an earlier polar-bear-inspired aerogel
A separate 2019 project from researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) made a carbon-tube aerogel inspired by polar-bear hair. It is not the later chitosan-and-TPU EAF textile fibre. The lab’s publication record identifies the paper as “Biomimetic carbon tube aerogel enables super-elasticity and thermal insulation,” published in Chem 5(7), pages 1871–1882, DOI 10.1016/j.chempr.2019.04.025. The 2019 Cell Press release via EurekAlert! describes its hollow carbon tubes and insulation concept; it is useful historical context, not evidence about the later wearable fibre’s composition or availability.
