A Pokémon TCG Prerelease is a limited-format event where players build a 40-card deck from a Build & Battle Box and play with cards from an upcoming expansion. Find a sanctioned event in the official Play! Pokémon Event Locator; then ask its Tournament Organizer how to register, what the fee covers, and when to arrive. Local signup, capacity, and prizes can vary.
How to find and register for a Prerelease
Search the official Play! Pokémon Event Locator for sanctioned Prerelease tournaments. Events are run by independent Tournament Organizers, and there is no single signup method or standard entry fee in the official guidance. Follow the event listing or contact its organizer directly.

Before registering, confirm the event date, check-in time, venue, age division, available seats, fee, and the organizer’s signup instructions. Ask whether the fee includes the Build & Battle Box and any prize packs. Buying a box does not register you for a tournament.

Build & Battle Box
Each player receives one Build & Battle Box. According to Play! Pokémon’s kit contents guidance, a box contains a ready-to-play 40-card deck, one of four alternate-art promo cards, four booster packs, and a deck-building tip sheet. The exact cards and promo options depend on the expansion.

Additional packs
The event guidelines recommend three additional booster packs for each player who completes the event, distributed at the conclusion. This is recommended prizing, not a guaranteed universal prize structure; ask the organizer what the local entry fee includes.
How to build your 40-card deck
Use the ready-to-play deck and cards from the boosters in your Build & Battle Box, along with Basic Energy supplied by the organizer. You may modify the ready-to-play deck. Play! Pokémon’s Prerelease Event Guidelines state: “Decks must be exactly 40 cards.”
The event guidelines allow about 20–30 minutes for deck building. The Tournament Rules Handbook gives a 30-minute build period for Sealed events; follow the schedule and instructions given by your organizer.

- The Pokémon TCG: Pokémon Day 2026 Collection includes 1 foil promo card featuring Pikachu with a Pokémon Day stamp.
- This also comes with 1 Pokémon coin.
- You will also receive 3 Pokémon TCG booster packs.
- Booster Packs May Vary from those pictured.
General Limited rules do not impose the usual four-copy limit by card name. A card’s own text may still restrict how it can be used.
How Prerelease games work
Players use four Prize cards rather than the usual six. Play! Pokémon recommends single-game matches instead of best-of-three. The guidelines specify a minimum of four players for a Pokémon tournament and require the event to be run through Tournament Operations Manager (TOM). They do not establish one universal schedule, pairing format, or start time, so use the details in your local listing.
What to bring and check before you go
The organizer supplies the Build & Battle Box and the Basic Energy needed for deck modification. Check the listing for venue-specific instructions and ask whether you need a Pokémon Trainer Club or other account identifier, or must arrive by a particular check-in time. The official guidance does not set a universal personal packing list.

What organizers must do
For an official Prerelease, the organizer must sanction the event through Play! Tools and run it through Tournament Operations Manager. The same organizer should sanction and run the event to avoid system errors. Afterward, the organizer must upload the Tournament Data File generated by TOM to the event page. A judge is not required by the Prerelease organizer instructions, though Pokémon recommends one depending on League size. The guidelines set a four-player minimum and warn that failure to meet operational criteria may result in cancellation or League discipline. See Running a Prerelease Event for organizer instructions.
Upcoming expansion dates are set-specific
Pokémon’s September 28, 2026 announcement says Mega Evolution—Delta Reign releases November 6, 2026, and select Play! Pokémon Stores begin selling its Build & Battle Box on October 24, 2026. Those dates apply to that expansion and selected stores, not every Prerelease. Pokémon’s Prerelease overview says these events may let players receive and play upcoming expansion cards up to two weeks before release.
