The two games tell the same story. What changes is which Pokémon turn up in the wild, how often they appear, and which legendary you meet at the climax: Ho-Oh in HeartGold, Lugia in SoulSilver. Nintendo’s official brochure puts it this way: “The Pokémon that appear and their rates of appearance differ, but the story is the same in both versions.”
What differs and what stays the same
- Story: Nintendo states it is the same in both versions.
- Wild Pokémon: Which species are available, and their encounter rates, differ.
- Story-climax legendary: You meet Ho-Oh in HeartGold and Lugia in SoulSilver.
- Counterpart legendary: According to Nintendo, the other one can also appear in each game once you reach the Hall of Fame. Neither legendary is locked out of a version permanently.
- Platform and accessory: The Pokémon Company lists both as Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi releases. Both ship with the Pokéwalker accessory, and both feature updated graphics and sound and touch-screen controls.
Version-exclusive Pokémon
The specialist database Serebii lists these among each game’s version exclusives. Treat the table as a set of notable examples, not a complete route-by-route capture guide. Nintendo’s brochure confirms that availability differs but does not publish a full species list.

How to choose
- Pick HeartGold if you want its exclusives, such as Arcanine, Donphan or Gliscor, or if you would rather face Ho-Oh at the story’s climax.
- Pick SoulSilver if you want its exclusives, such as Ninetales, Ursaring or Skarmory, or if you would rather face Lugia at the climax.
This is a matter of preference. The documented differences do not make either edition objectively stronger, and there is no published basis here for ranking the exclusives by how easy they are to get or how well they suit a team.
