Bring a durable attacker and plan for the opponent’s whole team, not just Snorlax. Purify a Shadow Pokémon when you prefer its improved appraisal, lower listed resource costs for certain actions, and the move Return; keep it Shadow when you value its higher attack damage and accept its lower durability and higher costs.
How to beat Shadow Snorlax in a Team GO Rocket battle
Snorlax’s Normal typing makes Fighting-type attacks the practical counter. The Pokémon GO Help Center’s type-effectiveness guide explains how type matchups affect battle damage, and Pokémon GO Hub’s Shadow Snorlax entry identifies Snorlax as Normal type and Fighting as its weakness.

Choose a Fighting-type Pokémon, or another Pokémon that can use a strong Fighting-type move. Favor one that can withstand incoming attacks as well as deal damage: Shadow Pokémon hit harder than their regular counterparts, but also take more damage. A type advantage is useful, but does not guarantee that one attacker will survive every opponent or defeat the entire lineup.
Plan for all three opponents
A Team GO Rocket Grunt battle uses a party of three Pokémon against the opponent’s Shadow Pokémon, according to the official Grunt battle guide. Build your party for the complete fight, with Fighting coverage for Snorlax and Pokémon that can handle the other two opponents. The best choices depend on the available Pokémon, their moves and levels, and the lineup you encounter; there is no single guaranteed team based on Snorlax’s weakness alone.

After the battle
Winning a Grunt battle gives Stardust and a chance to catch the Shadow Pokémon left behind. The number of Premier Balls available depends in part on how many of your Pokémon survive and your medal ranks, as the official Team GO Rocket Grunts guide explains.
Rocket battle or Shadow Raid? Check which encounter you mean
Shadow Snorlax in a Rocket battle and a Shadow Raid are different formats. A Rocket Grunt fight uses a three-Pokémon party. In a Shadow Raid at a Gym, the boss may become enraged; a Purified Gem can help subdue it. The Gem mechanic belongs to Shadow Raids, not ordinary Rocket Grunt battles. See Niantic’s explanation of Shadow Raids for that format.

What changes when you purify a Shadow Pokémon?
Purification spends Stardust and Candy. It improves the Pokémon’s appraisal and reduces the Stardust and Candy costs for powering it up, evolving it, or learning a new attack. The Pokémon GO Help Center’s Shadow and Purified Pokémon guide describes these mechanics. It does not give a fixed cost table; check the amount shown for the individual Pokémon in the game before purifying.

Purification also changes the Pokémon’s Charged Attack: it forgets Frustration and learns Return, a Charged Attack exclusive to Purified Pokémon. Return can be removed later with a Charged TM. Purifying still teaches Return even if Frustration was removed during a special event beforehand. Frustration can generally be removed with a Charged TM only during special events, so check the current official event announcement before spending TMs for that purpose.

Keep it Shadow or purify it?
| Consideration | Keep it Shadow | Purify it |
|---|---|---|
| Damage dealt and received | Deals more damage with Fast and Charged Attacks, but also takes more damage when attacked. | Gives up the Shadow damage profile. |
| Power-up and move costs | Costs more Candy and Stardust to power up and unlock a second Charged Attack. | Reduces Stardust and Candy costs for powering up, evolving, or learning a new attack. |
| Appraisal | Does not receive the appraisal improvement from purification. | Appraisal improves. |
| Frustration and Return | Retains Frustration unless it is removed during a special event. | Forgets Frustration and learns Return; Return is removable with a Charged TM. |
These differences are the official mechanics described in the Shadow Pokémon & Purified Pokémon guide. For the decision, weigh the Shadow’s greater damage against the extra damage it takes and its higher resource costs. Purification is a trade-off, not an automatic upgrade: choose it if the improved appraisal, reduced listed costs, and move change suit your plans; keep the Shadow form if its increased damage matters more to you.
