There are nine numbered Pokémon generations, from Generation I in Kanto to Generation IX in Paldea. Each is a game-era grouping associated with a region and a familiar choice among Grass-, Fire-, and Water-type first partners. Remakes and later returns to an older region do not, by themselves, add a new generation.
Pokémon generations at a glance
The starter trios below are a reference collation of the standard mainline game rosters; they are not presented as a single official Pokémon Company table. The official Pokémon region-map article covers the sequence of regions from Kanto through Paldea and calls out landmarks in several of them.

What are the Pokémon generations?
A generation is a numbered game-era grouping, not simply a region’s first appearance or a new release with a familiar setting. The sequence is Generation I: Kanto; II: Johto; III: Hoenn; IV: Sinnoh; V: Unova; VI: Kalos; VII: Alola; VIII: Galar; and IX: Paldea. The Pokémon Company’s region-map overview presents all nine regions.

For example, the Let’s Go games revisit Kanto rather than making Kanto a new generation. Pokémon Evolutions’ 2021 press description listed eight regions through Galar; that list predates Paldea and should not be read as the current complete sequence.

How the starter choice connects the generations
The recurring choice is a Grass-, Fire-, or Water-type first partner, a pattern described in the official Pokémon Parents overview. The individual Pokémon change with each generation, as the table shows. A return to Kanto can also change the choice itself: in Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!, the named partner options are Pikachu or Eevee rather than Kanto’s original trio.
Which starter suits a player is a matter of preference; the comparison here does not rank trios by difficulty or strength. The games also vary in their settings and activities, so a familiar three-way opening choice does not make the generations interchangeable.

How the major features and settings differ
Johto and Hoenn introduced changes to play and Pokémon
The official Gold and Silver retrospective highlights several additions associated with Generation II: held items, Pokémon genders, a real-time internal clock with events, 100 Pokémon, and the Steel and Dark types. These are useful historical markers of Johto’s game era, rather than a claim that every later game uses those systems in exactly the same way.

Ruby and Sapphire’s official game description lists double battles, Abilities, Natures, and Contests. The Pokémon Company’s Hoenn retrospective specifically identifies Hoenn as the first region to offer Contests. Together, these provide a well-documented feature snapshot for Generation III.

Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, and Alola are best compared through their places
For these generations, the official region-map material offers concrete landmarks rather than one single mechanic to stand in for an entire era. Sinnoh’s Mount Coronet, Great Marsh, and Old Chateau; Unova’s Skyarrow Bridge, Pokéstar Studios, and N’s Castle; and Kalos’s Poké Ball Factory, Parfum Palace, and Lumiose City give readers specific points of orientation.
Alola’s island locations, trials, Team Skull, and Aether Paradise likewise make its regional identity legible. The official Let’s Go overview also mentions Alolan forms, but that reference alone should not be used to reduce all of Generation VII to one feature.

Galar and Paldea emphasize different kinds of exploration
In Sword and Shield, Galar’s Wild Area is freely explorable, while Dynamax and Gigantamax battles and cooperative Max Raid Battles provide the cited feature hooks. Scarlet and Violet shift the framing: the official Pokémon Parents overview calls them the first open-world entries in the Pokémon video game series and organizes their story around pursuing Champion rank, facing Titan Pokémon, and challenging Team Star.
Why Hisui is not Generation X in this comparison
This comparison covers the nine numbered generations through Generation IX. Hisui is a distinct setting associated with the later prequel entry Pokémon Legends: Arceus, not an additional numbered generation in this nine-row sequence. Including it as Generation X would mix a game setting with the numbered-generation framework used here.
