pNFS is not a direct alternative to every parallel file system. It is a standardized way for NFSv4.1 clients to access file data from storage devices separately from metadata operations. “Parallel file system” describes a broader category of systems, with different protocols and service designs. For AI training, neither label predicts which will be faster: benchmark the actual data-loading and checkpoint workload, then compare scaling, reliability, security, and operating requirements.
What is the difference between pNFS and a parallel file system?
pNFS—parallel NFS—is part of the NFSv4.1 protocol. A client requests a layout from a metadata server; that layout tells the client how and where to access file data. With a suitable layout, the client can send data operations directly to one or more storage devices in parallel rather than carrying all file data through the metadata server. The layout type determines the storage protocol and how data is arranged across devices. RFC 8881 and RFC 8434 describe this protocol and its layout model.

A parallel file system is a category, not one protocol. Implementations may use their own client and metadata and storage services. For example, BeeGFS clients contact storage servers directly for I/O, while metadata services coordinate file placement and striping; metadata can also be distributed. BeeGFS 8.1 documents client, metadata, storage, management, and optional monitoring roles. Its server components run as user-space daemons, while its Linux client is a kernel module. Is pNFS faster than Lustre or another parallel file system?
There is no general answer. A pNFS layout can take bulk data traffic off the metadata path, and parallel clients can access data from multiple servers. That creates an opportunity for higher throughput, not a guarantee. Results depend on the client and server implementations, layout and storage protocol, network, storage media, metadata workload, caching, and concurrency. The protocol specifications explain the mechanism; they do not establish a universal benchmark ranking. RFC 5664 and RFC 8881
The available quantitative comparisons are workload-specific. A 2026 PRISM preprint reports that flash-backed NFS outperformed flash-backed Lustre by up to 3x in the authors’ distributed checkpoint-load use case and environment. That is a case study, not evidence that NFS or pNFS will outperform Lustre for ordinary training reads, another checkpoint pattern, or another deployment. The paper argues that researcher usability and POSIX compatibility also matter in AI workflows. PRISM preprint

There is no single bandwidth target for all training. Required throughput depends on such factors as model and GPU count, sample format and size, data-loader behavior, shuffling, cache hit rate, and the rate at which the training framework consumes input. Published figures can help with initial sizing, but each applies to a particular guide, workload, or service:

| More than 10 GB/s aggregate throughput | NVIDIA DGX storage guidance; publication date not stated on the page. Source | The guide says other technologies may be more efficient when a deployment needs more than this or grows to hundreds or thousands of nodes. It is not an NFS protocol limit or a universal cutoff. |
| 20 GB/s per A3 or A4 VM, approximately 2.5 GB/s per GPU | Google Cloud Managed Lustre AI architecture, last reviewed 2025-08-21. Source | This is a cloud-service example, not a general estimate for other file systems or deployments. |

NVIDIA says conventional NFS can be a reasonable starting point for smaller GPU configurations when server and network bandwidth are sized appropriately. Its scaling guidance is useful context, but it does not replace a workload test or establish that one storage design becomes preferable at a fixed node count. NVIDIA DGX storage guidance
What should an AI training storage benchmark measure?
Use representative data, framework settings, clients, and network paths. Keep the GPU input pipeline and checkpoint workflow in the test: storage throughput alone will not show whether GPUs wait for data or whether a job can recover efficiently.

- Measure reads at two levels. Record aggregate throughput across the cluster and throughput per node. Test cold reads as well as warm or cached epochs.
- Include metadata-heavy work. Measure file opens, directory traversal, file creation where relevant, and small-file reads. Test the real file count and directory layout, not only large sequential files.
- Use the actual input pipeline. Include representative data formats, realistic shuffling, concurrent workers, and the number of simultaneous training jobs you expect.
- Measure the effect on training. Track GPU idle time attributable to input waits alongside storage metrics. This shows whether a storage result translates into useful training throughput.
- Test the checkpoint lifecycle. Measure checkpoint write time, reload time, and the behavior of concurrent checkpoint activity. Include realistic checkpoint sizes and cadence.
- Repeat at expected scale. Increase clients and jobs to the intended concurrency, then observe whether metadata, storage targets, or network links become bottlenecks.
For workloads with many small files, packing examples into formats such as HDF5, LMDB, or TFRecord can reduce filesystem metadata access. NVIDIA discusses these formats while noting that memory use and memory-mapped I/O (mmap) behavior also need consideration. Validate any repacking with the application’s data loader rather than assuming it will improve every workload. NVIDIA DGX storage guidance
Should you cache training data locally?
Local SSD caching can reduce repeated reads from shared storage when training revisits the same data and the working set fits the cache. It changes demand on the shared data path; it does not make cold-start reads, cache management, or checkpoint writes disappear. NVIDIA describes local caching as a way to avoid repeatedly reading the same data from shared NFS during later epochs. NVIDIA DGX storage guidance

Test the cache with the dataset’s working-set size, epoch pattern, and consistency needs. Compare initial population and cold-start time with later epochs, and separately measure writes and checkpoint reloads. Local NVMe can be useful where the platform supports it and repeated reads justify the capacity, but the cited guidance does not establish a particular drive model or size.

Neither pNFS nor the broader parallel-file-system category is inherently simpler to operate. pNFS separates metadata control from client data transfer and introduces layout management and storage-protocol considerations. A parallel-file-system deployment may have multiple metadata, storage, management, and client components, each with its own capacity and failure modes. Assess the exact product and architecture against the following operational requirements:
Recommended Free Tools
- Client compatibility: installation process, supported operating-system kernels, container or Kubernetes workflow, protocol support, and application behavior.
- Scaling and monitoring: metadata capacity, storage-service or target scaling, layout and striping controls, observability, quotas, and performance under full client concurrency.
- Recovery and maintenance: failure domains, upgrades, recovery procedures, data migration, support model, and the on-call team’s experience with the system.
- Security across both paths: NFSv4.1 data access under pNFS is not necessarily carried over the same RPC path as metadata operations, so security implications depend on the storage protocol. RFC 8434 also requires pNFS implementations to preserve NFSv4.1 access controls, with enforcement responsibilities depending on the layout type. Ask how identity, ACLs, client authorization, encryption, fencing, and layout revocation work in the specific deployment. RFC 8881; RFC 8434
- Durability: define what acknowledgment of a checkpoint write means, how data is replicated or protected, and how restart recovery works. NVIDIA warns that asynchronous NFS writes may be acknowledged while data remains in server memory; a server failure before that data reaches storage can lose those writes. NVIDIA DGX storage guidance
- Cost and capacity: compare usable capacity, performance tier, licensing or managed-service charges, data movement, and idle capacity at the intended scale.
Which filesystem is best for AI training?
Choose based on the requirements that your benchmark and operations review establish—not on whether a system is described as NFS, pNFS, Lustre, or parallel. Use these decision checks to narrow candidates:
- Start with the workload shape. If jobs repeatedly read a fitting dataset, test local caching. If they open very many small files, test realistic metadata behavior and whether a packed format suits the application.
- Validate the complete input and checkpoint path. Compare cold and warm reads, per-node and aggregate throughput, GPU input waits, checkpoint writes, and reload time.
- Test at the intended concurrency. Confirm that metadata, storage services, and network links can serve the expected clients and simultaneous jobs.
- Make operational fit a requirement. Confirm supported clients and kernels, monitoring, recovery, security enforcement, write durability, and available support.
- Compare total deployment costs. Include data staging and movement, performance tiers, and capacity that may sit idle—not just the storage system’s headline throughput.
A deployment with modest scale and appropriately sized NFS infrastructure may be well served by conventional NFS, according to NVIDIA’s DGX guidance. Larger aggregate-throughput needs, high concurrency, or specific checkpoint and metadata behavior may favor another design—but the choice should follow a representative benchmark and failure-recovery test. No vendor-neutral, current apples-to-apples benchmark establishes a universal pNFS-versus-parallel-filesystem winner across AI training workloads.
