Plex is the better fit for organizing and streaming your own media; Kanopy is the better fit for watching films through a participating library or university. They solve different problems, so the right choice depends on whether you want a personal media library or institution-supported film access.
What is the difference between Plex and Kanopy?
Plex can play media from a personal library hosted on Plex Media Server, and it also has a separate selection of free, ad-supported on-demand titles and live TV. Kanopy streams films with support from participating public libraries and universities. It is not a personal media server, and Plex’s library features are not a library-card benefit.

| What matters | Plex | Kanopy |
|---|---|---|
| Main use | Organize and stream personal media; optionally watch free ad-supported streams. | Stream films through a participating library or university. |
| What you need | For a personal collection, your media files and Plex Media Server on a supported computer or NAS. | Eligible library-card or university access, subject to the institution’s participation and terms. |
| Cost and access | Basic playback on a local network and Plex’s ad-supported streaming are described as free. Remote personal-media streaming and other premium features are paid options; see Plex’s current plans for current details. | Access is supported by a public library or university. Eligibility, catalog and account terms depend on the institution. |
| Television option | Plex supports multiple device categories; check compatibility for your specific device. | Kanopy lists Roku among its available platforms. That does not mean every viewer needs a Roku or that every model is supported. |
Is Plex better than Kanopy?
Choose Plex for your own media
If your goal is to arrange and watch films, shows or other media you already have, Plex is the closer match. Plex Media Server runs on a supported computer or NAS, and Plex says the server is free to use. The server-based personal library is separate from Plex’s free, ad-supported on-demand and live-TV offerings.

Choose Kanopy for institution-supported films
If you want Kanopy’s film selection and your library or university participates, Kanopy is the more relevant service. Access depends on that institution, so check eligibility before planning around it. The availability of a title or viewing terms can also depend on the institution.

Can you use Kanopy without a library card?
For public-library access, Kanopy’s setup involves finding your library and entering card information. Some libraries do not offer Kanopy; its help page notes that a library missing from its search or map may not provide the service. University access is another route where available. Check Kanopy’s sign-up options and your institution’s guidance rather than assuming access is universal.

What should you check before choosing?
- For Plex: Decide whether you want to stream a personal collection, use Plex’s ad-supported streams, or pay for a premium feature. If considering a paid plan, confirm that it includes the feature you need and review current terms on Plex’s plans page.
- For Kanopy: Search for your public library or university and confirm its eligibility rules, catalog and account terms. Participation and access are institution-dependent.
- For a TV: Check the service’s current app availability for your exact device or model. Kanopy lists Roku as one platform option, not a universal hardware requirement.
