All three options have a documented Android TV client path, the relevant app category for Google TV. Jellyfin stands out if you want a server and official client without a subscription; Plex and Emby both have free and paid feature details to check against what you need. None can be named a universal winner for playback or ease of use without testing your Google TV device and media.
What you are comparing
Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby are software for organizing and serving a personal media library, paired with client apps for watching it on a television. They are not Google TV hardware or streaming devices. On Google TV, the relevant compatibility question is whether the app is available for your specific device and whether it plays your own files as expected.

Android TV documentation is a useful signal because Google TV uses the Android TV app ecosystem, but a platform listing does not guarantee identical results on every television or streaming box. Verify the app listing on the device you plan to use.
How the three compare
| Option | Google TV / Android TV evidence | Subscription and paid features | Best first check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jellyfin | Jellyfin’s official client directory lists an Android TV and Fire TV app: Jellyfin clients. Its client documentation provides additional platform information: Jellyfin client documentation. | Jellyfin says no subscription is required to use its server or any official client. | Confirm the official client appears for your device, then test your media and network. |
| Plex | Plex’s support index includes Android TV and Fire TV support material: Plex support articles. | Plex separates free and paid features. Check its current guide to confirm whether the feature you want is included for your account and region: Plex: Free vs Paid. | Check the current feature guide and the support material for the app and device you intend to use. |
| Emby | Emby publishes Android TV client documentation: Emby for Android TV. | Emby documents premium features through Premiere; check the current overview for details: Emby Premiere. | Compare the Android TV client guidance with the Premiere features you actually need. |
Which one should you choose?
Choose Jellyfin if avoiding a subscription is your priority
Jellyfin’s official directory explicitly says no subscription of any form is required to use its server or official clients. That makes it the clearest fit if you want to avoid a subscription for those components. It does not by itself establish how well a particular Google TV device will handle your files.

What to test on your Google TV device
Before moving a library or settling on a server, test the client on the exact television or streaming box you will use. A listing for Android TV does not establish playback behavior for every device, codec, subtitle format, or home network.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm the app is available in the device’s app store or listing.
- Play representative files from your library, including the formats you watch most often.
- Check the audio and subtitle combinations you use; a file can behave differently depending on its tracks and the device.
- Test over the network connection you will actually use, especially if the server and TV connect differently than they will day to day.
- Check whether the setup requires a feature or entitlement covered by a current paid plan.
Why there is no evidence-based universal winner
The cited product documentation establishes client availability and licensing information, not a controlled comparison of Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby on the same Google TV model with the same files and network. It therefore does not establish a general winner for interface quality, playback stability, performance, privacy, or setup difficulty. Those outcomes depend on your device, media, network, and settings.
