Plex’s documentation spells out how tags, metadata editing, and manual collections work. Jellyfin’s cited library guide explains library organization and warns that mixing library types can lead to unreliable metadata. Those sources cover different ground, so they do not support a back-to-back test or a verdict that one system’s tagging is better overall.
What Plex documents about tags
Plex libraries usually fetch metadata such as posters, summaries, and genres, and Plex provides controls to edit details or correct an incorrect match. Plex Support’s overview describes that process.

Plex uses “tags” broadly for metadata categories. As Plex Support puts it, “Tags include metadata such as directors, writers, genres/categories, collections and more.” These fields can hold multiple values and are typically available for sorting or filtering; users can edit details manually. See Plex Support’s Edit Details guide.

Building a manual collection
Plex documents one specific way to group items: add a Collections tag to an item, then assign the same collection tag to other items. Plex’s Collections guide describes this approach.

What Jellyfin documents about libraries
Jellyfin describes a library as a virtual collection of media that can include files stored in multiple server locations. Its library guide recommends using dedicated library types rather than a mixed library when reliable metadata results matter. The guide says: “Use of the mixed library type is currently discouraged due to unreliable metadata results.”
That guidance concerns library types and metadata reliability. It does not, by itself, establish how Jellyfin handles every custom tag, multiple tag values, tag-based filtering, or manual collection workflow. The cited material therefore cannot support a detailed field-by-field feature comparison with Plex.

What this comparison can—and cannot—settle
The available documentation supports a narrow distinction: Plex explicitly documents multi-value metadata tags, sorting or filtering, manual editing, and a collection-tag workflow; the cited Jellyfin guide establishes library organization and a caution about mixed library types. Neither source set amounts to a complete audit of either product, and neither describes a controlled comparison using the same media and clients.
To make a meaningful hands-on comparison, run the same tasks in both systems: add a custom tag, apply multiple values, filter or sort by the tag, group items into a collection, correct automatically fetched metadata, and check the result in the clients you use. Record server and client versions, library type, metadata source, and whether each change was manual or automatic. Verify Jellyfin’s detailed tag workflow against the version tested rather than assuming it from the library guide.

Choosing between them for metadata organization
If Plex’s documented tag and collection controls match the organization tasks you need, its support pages provide a clear reference for those workflows. If you are considering Jellyfin, treat its library-type guidance as relevant to metadata reliability, but confirm the specific tag and collection behavior you rely on in your installed version. Jellyfin describes itself as free software developed by a volunteer community; that fact does not determine which system better fits an individual tagging workflow. See Jellyfin’s About page.
