Plex Remote Access Security: Four Checks Before Opening Your Server

Four practical checks to make before enabling Plex Remote Access, including account 2FA, secure connections, router forwarding, and local authentication exceptions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before enabling Plex Remote Access, secure the account that controls the server, check how Plex handles connections, understand the router exposure, and avoid broad authentication exceptions. These are practical security checks—not a personal account of steps taken on a particular server.

1. Protect the Plex account with two-factor authentication

Remote access depends on the Plex account used to locate and manage servers, so start by enabling two-factor authentication (2FA). Plex says 2FA adds a second factor, such as an authenticator-app code, to the account password. To enable it, use the security controls on your Plex account page. Plex requires a separate account password and a verified email address. Plex’s 2FA instructions explain the setup.

Once enabled, Plex prompts for the second factor when you sign in to an app or website. There is an important Plex Home limitation: Plex says members can switch between Home users without another 2FA prompt. Include only people you trust with account access in your Plex Home.

2. Choose the right secure-connections setting

In Plex Media Server, open Settings > Network and review Secure connections. Plex offers two choices:

  • Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Setting What it does Trade-off
Required Accepts only secure connections. A client that cannot establish a secure connection may fail to connect.
Preferred (default) Uses secure connections when available, while allowing regular HTTP if a secure connection cannot be established or is unsupported. Allows an unencrypted connection in those fallback cases.

Plex describes its certificate arrangement as using Let’s Encrypt and says supported apps can connect securely. Its troubleshooting guidance cautions that some third-party apps do not support secure connections and recommends Preferred for an unsupported client. Check the current compatibility information for the apps you actually use before choosing Required. See Plex’s Network settings guidance, secure server connections article, and remote-access troubleshooting.

3. Know what Remote Access changes on your router

Plex Remote Access lets you reach your server from outside your local network. Plex can try to configure a compatible router automatically using UPnP or NAT-PMP. If automatic setup does not work, Plex documents manual port forwarding: forward the chosen external port to internal port 32400 at the server’s internal IP address. Router menus and network layouts vary, so follow the instructions for your own equipment and confirm the server’s internal address. Plex’s Remote Access setup guide and troubleshooting article cover the configuration.

  1. Check the automatic path: In Plex’s Remote Access settings, see whether the server reports that it is accessible outside your network. Automatic configuration depends on router support for UPnP or NAT-PMP.
  2. If needed, configure a manual forward: In your router’s port-forwarding controls, direct the selected outside port to port 32400 on the server’s internal IP. The exact field names and steps depend on the router.
  3. Verify connectivity: Check Plex’s Remote Access status and test from a device outside your home network. If it fails, use Plex’s troubleshooting steps rather than assuming that opening a port alone guarantees a working connection.

Port forwarding makes a path to the server reachable from the internet; it is not the same as requiring a VPN to join your home network. The cited Plex setup instructions specify the forwarding configuration, but do not establish that one router arrangement is safest for every home. Buying new network hardware is not inherently required: consider it only if your current equipment cannot support the configuration you need.

4. Avoid broad unauthenticated network exceptions

Plex says a claimed or signed-in server requires authentication by default. An advanced Network setting can exempt specified local IP addresses or ranges, but Plex warns that a client using that exception without signing in is treated as the admin or owner, with access to all libraries and server settings. That is a substantial privilege, not a low-risk convenience.

Leave the exception unused unless a specific legacy client requires it and you understand the access it grants. If you do configure one, keep the addresses or range narrowly limited to the devices that need it. Read Plex’s Network settings documentation and its explanation of authentication for local network access.

What to expect from Relay and secure connections

Plex Relay is a fallback route: when an app cannot connect directly to your server, a stream can pass through a Plex relay server. Plex says that with secure connections enabled, the stream remains encrypted end to end through Relay and is not terminated on the relay server. Relay has a maximum stream limit of 2 Mbps, so media with a higher bitrate may require transcoding. Plex says Relay is enabled by default in Network settings; disabling it removes this fallback. Encryption and streaming performance are separate considerations. Details are in Plex’s Relay article and Network settings guidance.

Secure connections may need internet access initially to download the server certificate and when a Plex app first establishes its connection; Plex says some connection details are cached for later offline use. Plex also explains that player apps linked to an account can locate owned or shared servers and connect securely when the server is signed in; reaching it away from home additionally requires Remote Access to be enabled. See Plex’s internet and network requirements and account-linking instructions.
