Playwright vs. Selenium: Which Browser Automation Tool Should You Use?

Playwright often suits new suites that want an integrated runner and auto-waiting. Selenium fits WebDriver investments, its wider core binding list, and first-party Grid needs.

For a new web end-to-end suite, Playwright is often the more convenient starting point if its supported languages and browser coverage fit: it offers an integrated test runner, auto-waiting, retrying assertions, tracing, and test isolation. Choose Selenium when WebDriver compatibility, an existing Selenium investment, its core Ruby binding, or first-party Selenium Grid better fits your team. The deciding test is your actual language, browser-brand, version, operating-system, and infrastructure requirements—not a universal speed claim.

What is the practical difference?

Both tools automate browsers for web testing. Their project boundaries differ: Playwright combines browser automation with Playwright Test, an integrated runner for Node.js. Selenium centers on WebDriver, a browser-control interface; teams pair it with a separate test framework for assertions and pass/fail reporting.

That distinction matters when setting up a suite. Playwright can supply more of the test workflow in one package. With Selenium, you can choose the framework that fits your existing project, but WebDriver alone does not provide the whole test-runner experience.

Compare the decision factors

Languages TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, Java, and .NET. Core automation features are supported across the language options, though test-framework integration differs. Playwright language support Current core bindings listed by Selenium: .NET/C#, Ruby, Java, Python, and JavaScript. Selenium downloads Use the language your team can maintain and the test framework already in your stack.
Browser targets Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit builds; branded Chrome and Edge channels; and device emulation. Playwright’s Firefox and WebKit builds are patched, and it does not directly automate branded Firefox or Safari. Playwright browsers WebDriver uses browser-specific implementations and supports major browsers. Grid can route sessions to remote browser and operating-system configurations. WebDriver · Grid List the exact browser brands, versions, operating systems, and enterprise policies your users require; validate that matrix before choosing.
Synchronization Waits for actionability before actions and retries web-first assertions until conditions are met. Playwright overview Offers implicit and explicit waits. Explicit waits can target a condition; Selenium warns against mixing the two strategies because timeout behavior can become unpredictable. Selenium waits Consider whether built-in waiting conventions suit your tests or whether the team prefers explicit, condition-specific waits.
Test feedback Playwright Test includes assertions, isolation, parallel execution, sharding, and tracing to inspect DOM snapshots, requests, logs, and screenshots. Playwright overview WebDriver controls a browser; a separate test framework such as JUnit, NUnit, or RSpec supplies assertions and reporting. Selenium documentation Decide how much test infrastructure you want alongside browser automation.
Remote execution Playwright documents a Selenium Grid connection as experimental. The documented integration currently works with Chrome and Edge and depends on Selenium 4 exposing a CDP websocket. Playwright and Selenium Grid Selenium Grid is a first-party project component for routing WebDriver sessions to remote browsers and running tests across machines and configurations. Selenium Grid If operating remote browser combinations is central, Selenium Grid is the more direct documented fit.

When Playwright is the better fit

Start with Playwright for a new web end-to-end project when your team uses a supported language, its browser options match your test matrix, and an integrated testing workflow is useful. Its documented capabilities include actionability checks, retrying assertions, a fresh browser context per test, parallel tests, sharding, and traces.

Those are product capabilities, not independent evidence that Playwright suites run faster or fail less often. The official documentation does not establish a universal performance winner over Selenium.

Check browser fidelity before committing

Playwright’s Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit targets are engine-level browser options, not a promise of identical behavior in every branded browser. Its documentation says it does not work directly with branded Safari or Firefox; Playwright uses patched Firefox and WebKit builds. It describes WebKit on macOS as closest to Safari for cases such as video playback, while platform-dependent features can vary. Installed Chrome or Edge may also be subject to enterprise policies that affect automation. Review the browser documentation against your requirements.

When Selenium is the better fit

Prefer Selenium if your organization already maintains WebDriver tests, depends on a WebDriver-compatible setup, needs Selenium’s core Ruby binding, or plans to use Selenium Grid as its first-party remote execution layer. Selenium describes WebDriver as a W3C Recommendation and Grid as part of the Selenium project.

Selenium synchronization is not absent: its documentation covers navigation readiness and dynamic-page races as well as implicit and explicit waits. For predictable condition-based synchronization, use explicit waits where appropriate, and avoid mixing implicit and explicit waits.

Make the choice against your test matrix

  1. Write down the browser targets. Include brand, version, operating system, and any enterprise policy constraints—not just “Chrome” or “Safari.”
  2. Check your languages and framework. Confirm the binding you need and whether you want an integrated runner or will use a separate test framework.
  3. Decide how tests will run. Identify whether local execution is enough or whether remote machines, parallel sessions, and a browser/OS matrix require a grid.
  4. Prototype a representative flow. Exercise the dynamic pages, authentication, and browser-specific behavior that matter to your application. Validate the intended browser targets in the actual CI or enterprise environment.
  5. Compare operations, not imagined benchmarks. Account for maintaining runner configuration, waits, browser versions, and remote infrastructure. No comparable official benchmark establishes one tool as universally faster.

Performance, reliability, and maintenance

There is no sourced apples-to-apples benchmark here that establishes a general Playwright-versus-Selenium speed ratio, flakiness rate, or cost saving. Do not select on a claimed universal speed advantage. Actual suite behavior depends on the test workload, browser matrix, synchronization, machine capacity, and whether tests run locally or remotely.

For reliability, make waits correspond to the condition the test needs, keep browser and operating-system targets explicit, and inspect failure evidence. Playwright tracing can expose DOM snapshots, requests, logs, and screenshots. In Selenium, use condition-specific explicit waits where needed and follow its warning not to combine implicit and explicit waits.

Maintenance also includes the surrounding system: Playwright Test setup and browser binaries on one side; Selenium bindings, a separate test framework, browser-specific drivers or implementations, and any Grid operations on the other. Which is simpler depends on your existing skills and infrastructure.

Common selection mistakes

  • Assuming WebKit means Safari. Playwright documents patched WebKit builds and does not support branded Safari directly. Validate Safari-specific requirements separately.
  • Assuming a browser engine settles operating-system fidelity. Confirm the OS and browser-brand combinations required by users and compliance.
  • Calling Selenium manual-only. Selenium has both implicit and explicit wait strategies; use them deliberately and do not mix them.
  • Treating Grid integration as equivalent in both directions. Selenium Grid is first-party; Playwright’s documented connection is experimental and limited to Chrome and Edge.
  • Choosing from unsupported performance claims. Use a representative workload in your own environment rather than an unverified speed or flakiness statistic.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots of pages rather than an end-to-end browser test suite, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL call saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server gives AI agents screenshot tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
