Choose Selenium when your existing WebDriver code, language and browser ecosystem, or need for remote sessions through Selenium Grid makes it the better operational fit. Neither project documentation establishes a universal speed or cost winner for scheduled screenshots.
What matters most for a scheduled screenshot job
A recurring screenshot is only useful if you can trust the result and explain changes. Choose the framework around your existing runtime, target browsers, execution model, visual comparison needs, and ability to keep the browser environment consistent—not a presumed speed advantage.

- Pick Playwright if you want screenshot capture alongside Playwright Test and its visual assertion workflow, or a CI setup that uses Playwright’s documented browser installation and worker controls.
- Pick Selenium if the job belongs in an existing WebDriver codebase or needs remote sessions distributed across machines, browser versions, or platforms through Grid.
- For either tool, define the capture environment and page-ready condition, then measure throughput and operating cost using the actual pages and output requirements.

Make scheduled screenshots repeatable
Framework choice alone does not make images consistent. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode; for visual comparisons it recommends using the same environment. Playwright visual comparisons

- Pin the runner image and browser version, and install the required browser dependencies as part of the job. Playwright’s CI guidance describes containers as useful for consistent screenshot environments. Playwright CI
- Set a fixed viewport and device scale, plus locale, timezone, color scheme, and fonts where they affect the page.
- Specify how authentication state is supplied and whether consent banners or other overlays should remain visible.
- Wait on a meaningful page-ready condition, such as a selector or application-specific state, instead of relying only on an arbitrary delay.
- Decide how animations, dynamic content, filenames, retention, and failure notifications should be handled.
These are job-design choices, not guarantees that either framework applies the same defaults. Playwright’s CI guidance does not recommend browser caching on the cited page: download savings may not outweigh cache restoration and Linux dependency requirements. Start with one worker, then scale deliberately
For a modest Playwright Test schedule, begin with one worker if stability and reproducibility matter most. The CI guidance recommends this starting point; increase workers or shard jobs only after checking that pages, accounts, and test data do not share mutable state. In Selenium, local WebDriver can suit a small job on one runner. Use Grid when sessions must run remotely across machines, browser versions, or platforms. Grid capacity depends on the resources of its machines and the workload; treat sizing guidance as an estimate and measure on your own images and pages. Selenium Grid · Grid getting started

A visual assertion compares against a baseline; establish and review the initial baseline using your team’s chosen process. A scheduled capture that only archives images can instead write a screenshot file using Playwright’s screenshot API, without treating every new image as a test failure.

Implement the job with Selenium
This Python example uses Selenium WebDriver locally and saves a full browser screenshot. Install the Selenium Python binding and ensure a compatible browser is available; consult Selenium’s current setup and browser-driver documentation before pinning versions. Replace or extend it with a condition that represents the page state you actually need. Schedule and operate the run
- Choose a runner. Use a pinned CI image or a maintained machine image with the required browser dependencies. Keep the image definition under version control.
- Run on a timer. Configure the scheduler in your CI system or job platform. The exact syntax and timezone behavior are provider-specific, so verify the schedule in that provider’s documentation.
- Write artifacts predictably. Include a stable page identifier and run timestamp in filenames; retain the images and logs for a defined period.
- Report failures distinctly. Separate navigation or readiness failures from visual differences and infrastructure failures so an alert points to the right remedy.
- Increase concurrency only after measurement. Use the production URL set and capture policy to assess run duration, retry rate, machine use, and cost.
Performance, reliability, and cost
There is no documented head-to-head speed or total-cost result for these tools on the specific workload of scheduled website screenshots. A meaningful comparison needs the same pages, browser versions, runner size, readiness rules, concurrency, retries, and artifact requirements. Record cold-start time, time to page readiness, screenshots completed per run, failure and retry rates, and infrastructure cost.

For reliability, make failures observable rather than silently saving a blank or incomplete image. Capture logs and relevant page state when navigation or readiness fails, use bounded retries for transient infrastructure errors, and alert when expected artifacts are missing. Avoid retrying a genuine visual change as though it were a browser startup problem.

The image changes even though the page looks the same
Check for changes in OS image, browser version, fonts, headless mode, viewport, device scale, locale, timezone, animations, and dynamic page content. Keep the environment fixed and make the page-ready condition deterministic before updating a visual baseline. Playwright visual comparisons

The page is captured before it is ready
A navigation event or document-ready state may not mean a single-page app has finished rendering. Wait for a page-specific selector or stable application state and ensure asynchronous content is present before capture.
CI screenshots fail while local runs pass
Compare the runner’s browser, OS dependencies, fonts, and headless configuration with the local environment. Install browser dependencies as part of CI setup and use a container or pinned image when consistency is important. Playwright CI
Parallel jobs interfere with one another
Check whether jobs share an account, session, test record, or mutable page state. Isolate those resources or coordinate access before raising Playwright worker counts or distributing Selenium sessions. Playwright parallelism · Selenium Grid
Selenium cannot start a browser or create a remote session
Verify the browser and driver compatibility, Selenium setup, and—when using Grid—the hub/router configuration and available node capacity. Can both tools capture an element instead of the whole page?
Yes. Playwright supports screenshots through its page and locator APIs, and Selenium documents element screenshots in its WebDriver bindings. Check the current API documentation for the language you use. Playwright screenshots · Selenium browser documentation
Does Selenium Grid make Selenium faster?
Grid enables remote, distributed browser sessions; it does not guarantee a faster run. Actual duration depends on available capacity, session startup, page behavior, and the number of jobs competing for resources. Selenium Grid
Which one should an existing WebDriver team choose?
If preserving its established language bindings and WebDriver workflow is the priority, Selenium is usually the lower-friction fit. Consider Playwright if the team values its visual assertion workflow and is prepared to adopt and operate its runtime.
