Playwright vs. Puppeteer Screenshots: Which Is Easier to Automate?

Puppeteer’s documented flow is direct for a one-off image; Playwright is the easier fit when screenshots need to become repeatable visual regression tests.

For a one-off screenshot script, Puppeteer’s documented launch-to-save sequence is marginally more direct; for visual regression tests, Playwright is easier out of the box because Playwright Test includes screenshot baselines and comparison assertions. Both tools expose a direct screenshot call, so there is no universal winner for every automation task. Choose based on whether you need a saved image or a repeatable test workflow.

How the screenshot workflows compare

Need Puppeteer Playwright
One-off screenshot Its official guide walks through launching a browser, creating a page, navigating, saving a screenshot, and closing the browser. A page screenshot also uses a direct page.screenshot() call.
Full-page or in-memory capture The guide documents page screenshots and element screenshots. The guide also illustrates full-page screenshots and returning an image buffer.
Element capture ElementHandle.screenshot() captures an element and attempts to scroll it into view if it is hidden. Locator screenshots are documented.
Visual regression testing The cited screenshot guide does not describe an integrated baseline assertion workflow. Playwright Test can generate reference screenshots and compare later runs with toHaveScreenshot().

These are differences in documented workflows, not a measured ranking of overall usability or speed. Puppeteer’s current official screenshot guide showed version 25.12.0 when checked on 2026-10-03; version metadata does not establish that it is easier or faster. See the Puppeteer screenshot guide and Playwright screenshot documentation.

Which tool should you choose?

Choose Puppeteer for a small capture script

If your goal is simply to navigate to a page and save an image, Puppeteer’s guide gives a straightforward end-to-end lifecycle. It is a sensible fit when its browser support and the rest of your project’s stack suit the task.

Choose Playwright for screenshot tests

If screenshots are part of a test suite and you want maintained reference images with comparison assertions, Playwright Test provides that workflow. On its first run, it generates reference screenshots; later runs compare against them. The visual comparisons guide explains the process and notes that the assertions work with the Playwright test runner.

Keep an existing stack when the need is only a file

For a plain screenshot file, both provide a direct API. If your project already uses one, check its browser requirements and setup conventions before migrating solely for screenshot capture. The official materials cited here do not establish a universal ease-of-use or performance winner.

Basic capture examples

The following minimal examples show the shape of a page capture in each library. Install the library and its required browser components according to the linked official documentation before running them; browser installation and support can vary by project setup.

Puppeteer: navigate, capture, close

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com');
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

This follows the lifecycle shown in the official Puppeteer screenshot guide. For a specific element, Puppeteer documents ElementHandle.screenshot(); it attempts to scroll the element into view when it is hidden.

Playwright: direct page screenshot

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com');
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Playwright’s screenshot API also documents options such as image format, clipping, and quality, along with full-page and buffer capture. Its guide covers locator screenshots in the same documentation.

Set up Playwright browsers and keep test images consistent

Playwright’s release notes recommend the @playwright/test package and downloading browsers with npx playwright install. The documented CI example runs installation after npm ci:

npm ci
npx playwright install --with-deps

For screenshot assertions, consistency matters: Playwright warns that rendering may vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Keep baseline generation and comparison on aligned environments. Different browsers or platforms may require separate baselines. See the Playwright release notes and visual comparisons guide.

If you need an image or PDF from a URL without managing a browser script, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture; replace the URL with the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Cookie banners are accepted before capture, and known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
