This guide builds a small test, shows how to grow it into a maintainable suite, and explains how to investigate failures in CI.
What Playwright testing is—and what it should prove
Playwright is browser automation and testing software. Playwright Test is its full-featured test runner, with features including auto-waiting, assertions, tracing, and parallelism. The official overview lists Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit as supported browser engines; which ones to test depends on the browsers your application supports and the risks you need to cover. Playwright overview
Start with a user-visible outcome, not an internal implementation detail. The Playwright documentation team puts the principle this way: “Automated tests should verify that the application code works for the end users, and avoid relying on implementation details such as the name of a function, whether something is an array, or the CSS class of some element.” Playwright best practices
Write a first user-focused test
Here is a small Playwright Test example. It opens a page, fills in a form, submits it, and checks for a visible confirmation. Replace the URL and labels with those in your application.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('visitor can send a message', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000/contact');
await page.getByRole('textbox', { name: 'Email' }).fill('[email protected]');
await page.getByRole('textbox', { name: 'Message' }).fill('Please contact me.');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Send message' }).click();
await expect(page.getByRole('status')).toHaveText('Message sent');
});
The test should reflect the interface your users encounter: accessible names, labels, and the success state should match your actual page. If your app uses another appropriate role or confirmation pattern, assert that instead. The example assumes the page is already available at the given local address; it does not configure or launch an application server.
Choose locators that survive interface changes
Prefer locators that describe the user-facing interface. A role plus an accessible name often expresses the intended interaction clearly. If your application defines a deliberate test-ID contract, use that where a user-facing locator is not suitable.
- Use roles and names for controls and landmarks when they match the interaction, such as a button named “Send message.”
- Use test IDs intentionally when the app provides a stable selector specifically for tests.
- Narrow ambiguous matches by chaining locators or filtering them, rather than selecting an arbitrary match from a broad result.
- Avoid long CSS or XPath chains that depend on DOM nesting or styling classes. Markup refactors can break such tests even when user-visible behavior is unchanged.
See the Playwright locator guide for locator approaches and examples.

Use waiting behavior instead of fixed sleeps
Playwright checks that an element is actionable before performing actions such as clicking. Its asynchronous web-first assertions retry while waiting for the expected state or until the assertion times out. In the example, toHaveText waits for the confirmation to appear with the expected text instead of reading the page once and comparing a value immediately.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA fixed delay such as “sleep for two seconds” does not establish that the page is ready: it can waste time when the page responds quickly and still be too short when it responds slowly. Use an action on the intended locator and an assertion for the resulting state. These mechanisms reduce timing races; they do not make every failure impossible. More detail is in Writing tests.
Keep tests isolated and repeatable
Each test should be able to run without relying on another test’s cookies, storage, or data. Playwright’s writing-tests documentation says every test gets a fresh environment, including when tests share a browser process. Your test design still matters: avoid carrying assumptions or mutable application state from one test into another.

- Make each test set up or obtain the state it needs.
- Do not rely on a previous test having logged in, created a record, or changed a setting.
- Assert the result relevant to that test, so failures point to the journey that broke.
Isolation makes it easier to rerun a single test and distinguish a product defect from state left behind by a different test. Playwright’s guidance on isolation and behavior is covered in its best practices and writing-tests documentation.
Choose browser coverage for your users
Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Select the engines that correspond to the browsers and environments your application promises to support, then run that coverage where it fits your development and CI workflow. The official materials establish the available engines, but do not rank them by market share or performance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRun the suite regularly in CI, such as on commits or pull requests, so failures surface near the change that introduced them. If runtime becomes a constraint, consider sharding. Playwright’s best-practices guidance notes Linux as a cost consideration for CI; verify that your own browser, dependency, and deployment constraints permit your chosen environment.

Investigate failures with reports and traces
When a test fails in CI, use the HTML report and Trace Viewer to inspect what happened. The Playwright guide describes traces as including a timeline, DOM snapshots, and network requests. Its recommended configuration is to collect traces on the first retry after a CI failure; tracing every test can be performance-heavy, so choose collection settings to suit the suite. A trace can help explain a failure, but it is not a guarantee that every cause will be obvious.
Begin with the failed assertion and its trace context: check which action ran, what the DOM showed, and whether relevant network requests completed. Then determine whether the application behavior, test locator, data setup, or environment needs attention. See Playwright best practices for its debugging recommendations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common Playwright test problems
- A click or fill fails because the target is not actionable: check that the locator identifies the intended, visible control and that the page state allows interaction. Prefer a user-facing locator over a brittle DOM path.
- An assertion fails before an update appears: use a web-first asynchronous assertion for the expected state rather than reading a value once or adding an arbitrary fixed sleep.
- A locator matches the wrong element or several elements: make the accessible name more specific, or narrow the result by chaining or filtering.
- A test passes alone but fails in the suite: look for dependence on shared cookies, storage, records, or execution order; make the test establish its own prerequisites.
- A CI failure is difficult to reproduce: inspect the HTML report and collect a trace on the first retry after failure so you can review the timeline, DOM snapshots, and network requests.
- A suite takes too long: review which browser engines your supported audience requires, and consider sharding if runtime is the constraint. Do not remove necessary browser coverage without weighing its user impact.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot API replace Playwright tests?
No. A screenshot captures a page; it does not by itself verify that a user journey or application behavior works. Use browser tests for interactions and assertions.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does Playwright support WebKit?
Yes. The official Playwright overview lists WebKit alongside Chromium and Firefox.
Does using auto-waiting guarantee tests will never be flaky?
No. Playwright’s actionability checks and retrying assertions help with timing, but test isolation, locators, application behavior, and environment still matter.
