Playwright Snapshot vs. Screenshot: Which Assertion Should You Use?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() when the contract is rendered appearance, and expect(page).toMatchAriaSnapshot() when the contract is accessible structure. A screenshot compares pixels; an ARIA snapshot compares roles, accessible names, and text. They are complementary, not interchangeable. If a test only needs one value or behavior, a focused assertion is usually clearer than either snapshot type.

What Playwright means by “snapshot”

Playwright uses “snapshot” for several different artifacts. In this comparison, the useful distinction is between a visual screenshot assertion and an ARIA snapshot assertion. Generic toMatchSnapshot() can compare text or binary data, but it is not the same as either an image comparison or an accessibility-tree comparison.

Artifact Typical assertion What is compared Best use
Visual screenshot expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() Rendered pixels from a page or locator Layout, styling, typography, spacing and imagery
ARIA snapshot expect(page).toMatchAriaSnapshot() A YAML-like representation of the accessibility tree Roles, accessible names, text and semantic structure
Focused assertion toHaveText(), toHaveValue(), role or URL assertions One specified fact or behavior Small, directly stated requirements
Generic snapshot toMatchSnapshot() Text or binary data supplied to the assertion Value snapshots that are not specifically visual or ARIA checks

The official references describe screenshot comparisons in the visual-comparisons guide and ARIA checks in the snapshot-testing guide.

When a screenshot assertion is the right contract

Choose a screenshot when a visual change should fail the test. It can protect a complete page or a deliberately scoped locator against changes to geometry, colors, fonts, borders, responsive layout, icons and images.

Page-level example

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('checkout page keeps its visual layout', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com/checkout');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('checkout.png');
});

Locator-level example

test('price card keeps its design', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com/pricing');
  await expect(page.locator('[data-testid="pro-card"]'))
    .toHaveScreenshot('pro-card.png');
});

Use a locator when the page contains unrelated, volatile areas such as timestamps, rotating promotions or user-specific content. A smaller capture generally produces a more intelligible diff and a narrower maintenance obligation.

When an ARIA snapshot is the better choice

Use an ARIA snapshot when the product contract is semantic: a navigation landmark must exist, a button must have an accessible name, a dialog must expose the expected controls, or a list must retain its role and text. This tests what assistive technologies can consume rather than how the page happens to look.

Page and region examples

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('navigation exposes the expected structure', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await expect(page).toMatchAriaSnapshot(`
- navigation:
  - link "Home"
  - link "Pricing"
  - link "Docs"
`);
});

test('dialog keeps its accessible controls', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  const dialog = page.getByRole('dialog');
  await expect(dialog).toMatchAriaSnapshot(`
- dialog:
  - heading "Delete project"
  - button "Cancel"
  - button "Delete"
`);
});

Scope the template to the smallest meaningful region. A broad page template can create a large diff when an unrelated section moves, while a focused region makes a semantic regression easier to diagnose. The Locator API documents locator-scoped assertions.

Decision framework: appearance, semantics or one fact?

  • Visual appearance is the requirement: use toHaveScreenshot().
  • Accessible structure is the requirement: use toMatchAriaSnapshot().
  • Only one value or behavior matters: use a focused assertion such as toHaveText(), toHaveValue(), a role assertion or a URL assertion. Playwright’s assertions guide lists these alternatives.
  • Both appearance and semantics can regress independently: combine a scoped screenshot with an ARIA snapshot, accepting that you now review two artifacts and maintain two contracts.

A screenshot cannot prove that a visually attractive control has the correct role or name. An ARIA snapshot cannot tell you that a button is clipped, has the wrong color contrast caused by styling, or is positioned incorrectly. Select the representation that directly expresses the failure you want to prevent.

Stability, timing and environment

Screenshot comparisons wait for a stable result

Playwright’s screenshot assertion takes consecutive captures and waits for two to be identical before comparing the final image with the expected one. Its documented default disables animations for the capture: finite animations are fast-forwarded and infinite animations are canceled, then animation state is restored. These measures reduce noise, but they cannot remove every difference caused by the execution environment.

Keep the comparison environment consistent

The visual-comparison documentation warns that operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode can affect rendering. Generate and compare baselines in a consistent environment whenever possible. A baseline produced on one platform can legitimately differ on another even when application code has not changed.

  • Pin the browser and Playwright versions used by your CI job.
  • Run baseline generation and comparison with the same operating-system image and display settings.
  • Control fonts and other installed rendering dependencies.
  • Prefer deterministic test data and stable viewport settings.
  • Limit screenshots to the page or component that owns the visual contract.

ARIA snapshots have their own maintenance cost

ARIA snapshots are text-like templates, so their diffs are often easier to read than pixel diffs. However, a deliberately broad template can still change substantially after a structural redesign. Keep the scope intentional and include only semantics that matter to the contract.

Creating, storing and updating baselines

First run

When toHaveScreenshot() has no reference image, Playwright writes one. Treat that file as a reviewed test artifact, not an automatic approval. The visual guide recommends storing snapshot files in version control so changes are visible in code review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Intentional product changes

After confirming that a visual or semantic change is expected, update snapshots with:

npx playwright test --update-snapshots

The same workflow updates ARIA snapshot templates and produces reviewable patch files by default. Review the resulting image or text diff against the intended product change before committing it.

File format and location

PNG is the default screenshot snapshot format. Playwright also supports lossless WebP when the snapshot filename uses the .webp extension. Snapshot path templates and project configuration can determine where artifacts are stored; the TestProject API documents project-level configuration that affects test output.

Combining both checks without duplicating every test

Use both assertions when the page has two independent contracts. For example, a checkout component may need a stable visual arrangement and an accessible dialog structure:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
test('checkout is visual and accessible', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com/checkout');
  const summary = page.locator('[data-testid="order-summary"]');
  await expect(summary).toHaveScreenshot('order-summary.png');

  const payment = page.getByRole('region', { name: 'Payment' });
  await expect(payment).toMatchAriaSnapshot(`
- region "Payment":
  - heading "Payment"
  - textbox "Card number"
  - button "Place order"
`);
});

Do not add both by habit. Each assertion creates a separate expected artifact and a separate review decision. If the requirement is only “the submit button is enabled,” a focused assertion is less noisy and more diagnostic.

Troubleshooting common failures

Unexpected screenshot diff

  • Cause: Different OS, browser, fonts, hardware or headless settings. Fix: compare in the same pinned environment used to generate the baseline.
  • Cause: Animations, rotating content or asynchronous data. Fix: use deterministic fixtures, scope the locator, and let Playwright’s stability wait complete before investigating the diff.
  • Cause: An intentional design update. Fix: inspect the diff, then run npx playwright test --update-snapshots only after approval.

Missing baseline

Run the test once in the intended environment to generate the reference, review the artifact, and commit it with the test. Do not generate baselines in an environment that differs from CI unless that difference is intentional and documented.

ARIA snapshot mismatch

  • Cause: A role, accessible name, text node or hierarchy changed. Fix: inspect the semantic diff and decide whether the product change is correct.
  • Cause: The template covers too much page content. Fix: move the assertion to a locator for the relevant region.
  • Cause: The test is checking a single value. Fix: replace the broad snapshot with a focused text, value or role assertion.

Flaky screenshots across machines

First verify environment consistency rather than repeatedly approving changed images. Standardize browser versions, fonts, viewport and execution mode, and remove volatile content from the captured scope. A changed image is a diff to investigate, not proof that the baseline should be replaced.
