Both Playwright and Puppeteer can capture page and element screenshots, including full-page images and clipped regions. For visual regression testing, Playwright Test has a documented built-in workflow: toHaveScreenshot() creates a baseline on its first run and compares later runs against it. Puppeteer documents screenshot capture APIs and options; its screenshot guide alone does not establish a built-in equivalent assertion workflow. That distinction can make Playwright Test a more direct fit when snapshot assertions are central, but it is not proof that Puppeteer cannot be paired with image-comparison tooling.
What each tool does for screenshot testing
Playwright and Puppeteer both let test code save screenshots of a page or a selected element. Both document full-page capture and clipping to a defined region. The practical choice is less about whether either can take a screenshot and more about the workflow around it: how your project runs browser tests, whether you need built-in screenshot assertions, and how consistently you can reproduce the rendering environment.

The official documentation establishes these capabilities, but does not provide a controlled head-to-head benchmark for speed, reliability, or maintenance. Those outcomes depend on the project and its CI setup, so choose by workflow and validate in your own environment rather than assuming one tool is universally faster or less flaky.

The cited screenshot documentation establishes capture APIs, not a built-in visual assertion workflow. That does not rule out using separate image-comparison tooling. |
Choose based on the test you need
For visual regression assertions
If you want screenshot capture and baseline comparison integrated into the test runner, Playwright Test is the more directly documented path. Its toHaveScreenshot() page and locator assertions compare subsequent runs with reference snapshots. A screenshot saved to disk is not itself a visual regression test: you still need a comparison step and a decision about acceptable differences.

For reports, debugging, or downstream image processing
Either tool can capture an image for later use. Playwright explicitly documents returning a screenshot buffer for processing; Puppeteer documents screenshot output and options. If the test suite already uses one of these tools, keeping capture in that framework is usually simpler than introducing another browser workflow just to save images.
For element or region checks
Both support capturing an element or a defined region. Use an element screenshot when the component itself is the test subject; use a clipped page screenshot when the region is defined by coordinates. A full-page screenshot is useful for broad page review, but dynamic content and lazy-loaded material can make it less predictable unless the test controls when capture happens.
For an existing test suite
Prefer the framework already used by your tests unless a needed capability—such as Playwright Test’s integrated screenshot assertions—justifies changing the setup. This is a workflow recommendation, not a measured claim that one framework runs faster or requires less maintenance.

Capture a screenshot with Playwright
With a Playwright page already created and navigated, save a viewport screenshot like this:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
To capture the full scrollable page, pass fullPage: true:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
For a selected element, use a locator screenshot:
await page.locator('.checkout-summary').screenshot({ path: 'summary.png' });
You can also omit path and use the returned image buffer in later processing. See the Playwright screenshot API guide for the documented screenshot options and examples.

Capture a screenshot with Puppeteer
With a Puppeteer page already created and navigated, save a viewport screenshot:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
Capture the full page with fullPage:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
For an element screenshot, obtain an element handle and capture it:
const element = await page.$('.checkout-summary');
if (!element) throw new Error('Checkout summary not found');
await element.screenshot({ path: 'summary.png' });
Puppeteer’s documented screenshot options include fullPage, clip, and path. Check the API reference for the version used by your project; the current reference pages consulted for this comparison displayed Puppeteer 25.12.0. Screenshot guide · Screenshot options

Use Playwright Test for visual comparisons
When screenshot differences should fail a test, use Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion rather than merely writing an image file. For example:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('checkout summary matches its reference', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/checkout');
await expect(page.locator('.checkout-summary')).toHaveScreenshot();
});
On its first run, the assertion creates a reference snapshot; later runs compare the new screenshot with that reference. The same visual comparison workflow supports page screenshots. Review the Playwright visual comparisons documentation for how snapshots are managed and compared.

Pixel comparisons are meaningful only when the rendering conditions are sufficiently consistent. Playwright warns that output can vary with host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors, and recommends running tests in the same environment used to generate the baseline. In practice, keep the browser/runtime and CI image steady, and control changing application content before capture.

Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot without wiring up a browser automation project, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; see the API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Troubleshoot common screenshot-test failures
The screenshot differs between local and CI
Compare the environments first: OS, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode can all affect rendering. Generate and check baselines in a consistent environment.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Confirm the page reached the state under test before capture. A navigation completing does not necessarily mean that the particular content or element your test expects has appeared; wait for that content using the framework’s normal page or locator wait workflow.
The element screenshot fails because the selector matches nothing
Verify the selector against the rendered page and wait for the target element before taking its screenshot. In Puppeteer, check the returned element handle before calling screenshot(), as in the example above.
A full-page image misses changing or deferred content
Check whether the page loads content as it scrolls or changes after initial rendering. Make the test reach the intended content and stable state before capturing; otherwise, the image may reflect a different page state on each run.
A visual assertion reports a difference you cannot reproduce
Run the test again in the same environment as the baseline and inspect whether content, runtime, or browser conditions changed. Avoid updating the reference until you have decided that the changed pixels are expected.
