If Playwright screenshot tests pass locally but fail in CI, first compare the CI diff and trace, then align the machine, browser, and page state before changing tolerances or updating a baseline. Playwright warns that screenshot rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. A Mac or Windows baseline compared with a Linux CI render is one plausible cause—not a diagnosis by itself. Playwright’s visual-comparisons guidance recommends creating and comparing snapshots in the same environment.
Start by identifying what failed
Keep the expected image, actual image, and diff image from the CI run. Look at the shape and location of the difference before changing the test:

- Broad changes across text, spacing, or layout point you toward a rendering-environment mismatch, such as fonts, browser build, or operating system.
- Small localized changes around a timestamp, avatar, animation, or live region suggest content that changes between runs.
- A substantially different page may mean the test captured the wrong state—for example, content had not loaded or a request failed—rather than a subtle pixel-rendering difference.
These patterns help prioritize investigation; none proves a cause without checking the run. Do not replace the expected image just to make an unexplained failure disappear.

| Compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Operating system or container | For example, local macOS versus a Linux CI runner. Record the container or runner image as well. |
| Playwright and browser | Compare the installed Playwright package version, browser project, and browser build. Keep the installed browsers aligned with the package version. |
| Capture mode and geometry | Check headless versus headed mode, viewport, and device scale. Use the same values when producing and comparing a baseline. |
| Fonts and page inputs | Check installed and loaded fonts, locale or time zone when rendered content depends on them, and test data or network responses. These are useful diagnostic variables, not proof of the cause. |
If the team intentionally tests multiple operating systems or browser projects, treat those as separate rendering targets and maintain corresponding baselines. Playwright can include project names in snapshot paths when configured for multiple projects; see snapshot path configuration.
Reproduce the CI environment
A reliable first fix is to generate and compare screenshots in the same environment. Playwright’s CI guidance shows using a Playwright container and installing browser dependencies in CI. Align the container image tag with the Playwright version installed by the project; a different image or browser installation is not automatically equivalent.
For a JavaScript project, the documented basic sequence is:
- Install locked project dependencies:
npm ci. - Install Playwright browsers and operating-system dependencies:
npx playwright install --with-deps. - Run the tests:
npx playwright test.
Use the corresponding Playwright container for your project where appropriate, and verify its tag against the installed Playwright version in the official CI documentation. Do not copy a floating or mismatched tag and assume it reproduces your local browser.

For more repeatable visual tests, generate the golden and run its comparison on the same pinned operating-system/container and browser setup. If your coverage intentionally spans environments, generate and review a baseline for each target rather than comparing unlike renders.
Make the page state repeatable
toHaveScreenshot() is a Playwright Test assertion. It waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the final capture with the expected image. Screenshot assertions disable CSS animations, transitions, and Web Animations by default: finite animations are fast-forwarded and infinite animations are canceled for capture, then resumed afterward. Those safeguards do not make changing application data or external services deterministic. See the PageAssertions API.
Control dynamic content narrowly
- Use fixed test data for values that otherwise vary, such as dates, user names, or generated records.
- Mask only a locator that is intentionally dynamic and irrelevant to the visual assertion.
- Use a screenshot stylesheet to hide or replace a known volatile region when that better reflects the intended comparison.
- Avoid uncontrolled third-party dependencies where they can change the page state or response.
Masking or hiding too much can conceal a real regression. Keep the treatment as small as possible and make clear why the changing region is excluded.
Choose screenshot scale deliberately
The API’s scale option can be 'css' or 'device'. Use 'css' when you want one image pixel per CSS pixel; 'device' captures device pixels and may produce larger images on high-DPI displays. Make the choice consistent between baseline creation and CI comparison.

Use a trace to find state and network differences
A screenshot shows the final pixels, but not necessarily how the page reached them. For a CI failure, Playwright’s best-practices documentation recommends the Trace Viewer instead of relying on videos and screenshots alone. A trace exposes the action timeline, DOM snapshots, and network requests, helping you see whether CI captured a different state or received different responses.
Enable trace capture on retry in your Playwright Test configuration, or run with tracing locally to inspect the failing sequence. Review the trace alongside the expected, actual, and diff images. If the browser fails to launch rather than producing a visual diff, the CI guide identifies DEBUG=pw:browser as useful launch logging.
Adjust tolerances only for understood differences
toHaveScreenshot() supports threshold, maxDiffPixels, and maxDiffPixelRatio. They allow color or pixel differences; they do not correct a mismatched environment, unstable content, or a failed page load. Set a tolerance only after reviewing the difference and deciding it is acceptable. Scope it to the relevant assertion instead of loosening comparisons globally.
If the visual change is intentional, review the new output and update the golden deliberately with --update-snapshots. Commit the reviewed baseline with the code change. Do not have CI update expected images automatically as a way to silence failures. See Playwright’s snapshot update guidance.

Stability, parallelism, and browser caching
Playwright’s current CI documentation recommends setting workers to 1 in CI to prioritize stability and reproducibility. Teams with powerful self-hosted runners may choose to parallelize; sharding is another documented way to scale test execution. A screenshot diff alone does not show that parallelism caused it.
The same CI guide generally does not recommend caching browser binaries: restoring them can take as long as downloading, and Linux operating-system dependencies cannot be cached. If you do cache browser binaries, the guide says to key the cache against the Playwright version. Prefer a correctly aligned browser installation over treating a cache as a reliability fix.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Most of the page differs in CI | OS, browser build, fonts, headless mode, viewport, or device scale | Compare the environment details and reproduce the baseline and run in the same pinned environment. |
| Only one changing region differs | Dynamic data, animation not covered by defaults, or an external response | Inspect the trace and make the relevant test input deterministic; mask or style only the intentional volatile region. |
| The page is blank, incomplete, or in the wrong state | Load timing, failed request, or test-state issue | Inspect the trace’s action timeline, DOM snapshots, and network requests before modifying screenshot settings. |
| Browser does not launch in CI | Browser installation, OS dependencies, or runner setup | Align the Playwright package, browser installation, and container; use DEBUG=pw:browser for launch logs. |
| A small difference is understood and harmless | Known acceptable rendering variation | Use a narrowly scoped screenshot tolerance, documenting why that difference is acceptable. |
| An intentional design change fails against the old golden | Expected snapshot is out of date | Review the changed screenshot and update snapshots deliberately with --update-snapshots. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright’s screenshot assertion already wait for the page to stabilize?
It waits until two consecutive screenshots match, but that does not make changing application data, third-party responses, or every page state deterministic.
Should I increase maxDiffPixels if CI is the only place a screenshot test fails?
Not until you have reviewed the diff and identified an acceptable difference. A tolerance can allow known variation, but it cannot fix an unexplained environment or page-state mismatch.
Can I use one golden for several operating systems?
If the rendered output differs by platform or browser project, maintain baselines for the distinct targets rather than comparing unlike renders.
