Save authentication state and take the screenshot only after those checks pass. A screenshot of the sign-in page is an observation, not proof of why the redirect happened.
Verify the login before saving state or taking a screenshot
Wait for the application’s expected post-login URL, then check an authenticated control such as an account menu or profile button. A URL check alone may not mean the app has finished establishing its session. Playwright’s authentication guide uses a final-URL check and an authenticated UI signal before writing storage state: Playwright authentication.

});Use the real sign-in URL, destination, labels, and authenticated marker from your app. If the destination contains a variable path or query string, provide a deliberate URL pattern that still verifies the expected origin and route. Playwright recommends explicitly waiting for the intended URL when an action may trigger multiple navigations; its navigation guidance is at Playwright navigations.

Trace what happened when the page returned to sign-in
- Check the final URL. Log
page.url()after the submit and inspect the redirect chain or network trace. Confirm whether the browser reached the expected destination, stayed on the sign-in route, or went to an identity-provider step. - Check an app-specific authenticated signal. Assert a visible account control or another UI element that only appears for an authenticated user. Use a locator appropriate to the application rather than treating a successful button click as proof of login.
- Inspect saved state from that run. If the workflow creates a separate context for screenshots, load the storage state only after the URL and UI checks pass. Compare the state safely; do not print cookie values, tokens, or authorization headers in CI logs.
- Separate page content from capture failure. If Playwright returns an image of the sign-in page, investigate navigation and authentication. If screenshot capture throws, preserve the exception and trace: that is a capture error, not necessarily a redirect.
These observations help narrow the problem, but the title alone cannot identify its cause. Possible explanations to investigate include rejected credentials, a required identity-provider step, an unexpected redirect target, or a session that was not established. Confirm the application’s own expected flow before concluding which applies.

Reuse storage state safely in a separate screenshot context
When login setup and screenshots run in different tests or contexts, write the state after successful authentication and create the later context with that file. Playwright documents a setup-project pattern for this: authentication and reusable state.

Keep it out of source control, restrict access to it, and use a test account with only the permissions the test requires. Use screenshot assertions only after authentication is established
expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() is a visual comparison, not an authentication check. Playwright waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing them; animations are disabled and the caret is hidden by default. First assert the final URL and authenticated UI, then run the snapshot assertion. See Playwright visual comparisons.

- Final URL remains the sign-in route: inspect the form result and application redirect behavior. Verify test credentials and whether a second identity-provider step is required.
- Expected URL appears, but the account marker is absent: wait for the app’s authenticated UI state and inspect whether session initialization completed. Do not save state merely because navigation occurred.
- Local run passes but CI returns to sign-in: compare the final URL and presence of expected state without logging secrets. A GitLab issue describes one CI timeout waiting for
/alongside storage state without the expected token; it is an individual report, not evidence that CI generally causes login failures: Playwright issue report. - Screenshot call throws during SAML: keep the exception and trace, and distinguish it from an image that successfully captured the sign-in page. Does a screenshot showing the sign-in page prove that Playwright login failed?
No. It shows the page at capture time; check the final URL and an authenticated UI signal to determine what happened.

No. It stabilizes and compares visuals; authentication should be established with URL and application UI checks first.
