Playwright Screenshot Path Not Working on Windows: How to Fix It

A missing Playwright screenshot on Windows is usually a path, directory, or snapshot-layout issue. Find the exact destination and fix it with Node.js or Python path utilities.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a Playwright screenshot is missing on Windows, first identify which screenshot API you called. For page.screenshot() or a locator screenshot, a relative path is resolved from the process’s current working directory—not automatically from the script’s folder. Print the resolved destination, make sure its parent directory exists and is writable, and use your language’s path utilities. If you used toHaveScreenshot(), check Playwright Test’s snapshot-directory rules instead.

Find out which Playwright screenshot method you used

The destination rules depend on whether you are saving an ordinary screenshot or creating a visual-test snapshot.

Method What it does Where to investigate
page.screenshot() or a locator screenshot Saves an image when you provide a path. Without a path, the Page API returns screenshot bytes rather than writing a file. The process’s current working directory, the resolved path, and filesystem access. Playwright Page API and Python Locator API
expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() Creates or compares visual-test snapshots under Playwright Test’s snapshot layout. The per-test snapshots directory and any snapshotPathTemplate configuration. Visual comparisons

Fix a direct screenshot path

Node.js: resolve and print the output path

Build the path with Node’s path module, then log both the working directory and the absolute destination. This makes it clear where the process is trying to write.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
const path = require('node:path');

const output = path.resolve('artifacts', 'page.png');
console.log('Working directory:', process.cwd());
console.log('Screenshot output:', output);

await page.screenshot({ path: output });

The artifacts directory must already exist and be writable. If you launch the script from a different directory, path.resolve() starts from that process working directory. Playwright documents that a relative screenshot path is resolved relative to the current working directory, not the source file’s location. See the Page API documentation.

Python: use pathlib and inspect the resolved path

from pathlib import Path

output = Path("artifacts") / "page.png"
print("Working directory:", Path.cwd())
print("Screenshot output:", output.resolve())

page.screenshot(path=str(output))

As with Node.js, the parent directory must exist and permit writes. Python’s locator screenshot API documents relative paths as relative to the current working directory. See the Python Locator API.

Avoid malformed Windows path strings

In JavaScript string literals, a backslash can introduce an escape sequence. Prefer path.join() or path.resolve() instead of typing a Windows path with unescaped backslashes. Forward slashes are also usable for Playwright snapshot path templates on all platforms; for ordinary filesystem paths, use the language’s path utilities to assemble the destination safely.

Check the destination and whether a file should exist

  • Log process.cwd() in Node.js or Path.cwd() in Python, then compare it with the printed absolute screenshot path.
  • Check that the parent directory exists. A path such as artifacts/page.png does not create the artifacts folder for you.
  • Confirm the running user has permission to write to the destination.
  • Check whether later test code, cleanup hooks, or another process moves or deletes the image.
  • If you omitted the path option, do not expect the Page API to create a file: it returns the screenshot bytes instead. Page API reference

Fix a toHaveScreenshot() snapshot path

toHaveScreenshot() is for Playwright Test visual comparisons, not an unrestricted way to save an image anywhere. A named snapshot path must remain inside the snapshots directory associated with that test file; otherwise Playwright throws. Check the visual comparisons guide before changing the path.

Review custom snapshot layouts

If your project sets snapshotPathTemplate, inspect that configuration and resolve relative templates from the Playwright config directory. Playwright documents forward slashes as valid in snapshot path templates on every platform. Use that convention in the template, and keep per-test snapshot paths within the test’s snapshots directory. The TestConfig API documents the configuration option.

Separate Python Windows event-loop failures from path failures

An asyncio or subprocess exception can look like a screenshot problem even though it is not evidence of a malformed file path. Playwright’s Python library runs its driver in a subprocess and requires Windows’ ProactorEventLoop for async subprocesses; SelectorEventLoop does not support them. The documentation says Python 3.8 and later use ProactorEventLoop by default, and Playwright sets it by default on Windows with Python 3.7. If the traceback identifies an event-loop or subprocess failure, investigate that runtime requirement. If the screenshot call completes but the file is missing, return to the destination and filesystem checks. Playwright Python library documentation

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you see Likely issue What to do
No image file appears No path was supplied, the file was written to a different working directory, or the parent folder is missing. Log the resolved path and working directory; provide a path and ensure its parent exists.
The path looks wrong or contains unexpected characters Backslashes in a JavaScript string may be interpreted as escapes. Use path.join() or path.resolve() to construct it.
toHaveScreenshot() throws after a path change The requested snapshot path may be outside the test’s snapshots directory. Keep the path within that per-test directory and review snapshotPathTemplate.
Python reports an asyncio or subprocess exception on Windows The runtime may be using an event loop that does not support async subprocesses. Check the traceback and the documented ProactorEventLoop requirement rather than treating it as a file-path error.
The logged destination is correct, but the file is absent The parent directory may not exist, the process may lack write permission, or later code may move or delete the image. Check the directory and access rights, then inspect cleanup and file-moving code.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot of a public webpage rather than a Playwright-controlled browser session, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one GET request. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs.

For a WebP screenshot, replace the example URL with your target. The API key is available from your ScreenshotNeo account; see the API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Playwright save screenshots by default?

A direct Page screenshot is not written to a file unless you provide a path; without one, the Page API returns screenshot bytes. With a relative path, the destination is based on the process’s current working directory.

Can I use forward slashes in a Playwright snapshot path on Windows?

Yes. Playwright documents forward slashes for snapshot path templates on all platforms.
