A black Playwright screenshot is a symptom, not proof of a GPU problem. First check what the capture contains and how it was requested; then compare headed and headless execution, inspect browser-launch logs, and verify the browser and operating-system setup. Playwright’s documentation does not identify one universal GPU flag for fixing black screenshots, so treat launch-argument changes as targeted experiments, not guaranteed fixes.
1. Confirm what the screenshot captured
Before changing Chromium settings, verify that the file you are examining is the output from the run you are debugging. Check the URL, page state, viewport, and whether the screenshot is viewport-sized or full-page. A page that has not loaded its expected content can look black or blank even when screenshot capture itself is working.

Review the options passed to page.screenshot(). Playwright supports full-page capture, transparent backgrounds with omitBackground, and CSS-pixel or device-pixel scale. These options affect capture dimensions and background behavior; they are not documented as general fixes for a black rendered page. See the Page API.
If the page state is uncertain, record its URL and collect a trace with screenshots and DOM snapshots. A trace also includes browser operations and network activity, which can help distinguish a page that failed to render from an image that was captured unexpectedly. See Playwright tracing.

2. Compare browser modes before changing GPU settings
Playwright runs browsers headlessly by default. When no channel is specified, headless Chromium uses a separate headless shell. The chromium channel opts into the newer headless mode described in Playwright’s browser documentation. A comparison between those modes can reveal whether the symptom depends on the execution mode; it does not establish a universal fix.
Test headed execution
Where a display is available, rerun the same capture in headed mode and compare the result. On Linux CI, headed execution requires an X server such as Xvfb; follow the setup guidance in Playwright’s CI documentation. If headed and headless results differ, preserve both outputs and their environments rather than immediately attributing the difference to GPU acceleration.

3. Record the launch environment
Write down the Playwright version, selected browser and channel, operating system or container image, and whether the run is headed or headless. Playwright notes that visual rendering can vary with host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Its visual comparisons guide recommends generating and comparing screenshots in the same environment where possible.
- Keep the failing screenshot and the closest known-good screenshot.
- Note whether the black area covers the whole image or only part of it.
- Record the exact capture options and any custom launch arguments.
- When comparing runs, change one variable at a time and keep the rest consistent.
4. Inspect browser-launch diagnostics
Enable Playwright’s browser launch logging before introducing new arguments. For a test run, use:

DEBUG=pw:browser npx playwright testReview the launch output and browser errors, and preserve it with the screenshot and trace. Playwright exposes launch settings such as headless, channel, chromiumSandbox, and custom args in its BrowserType API.
Be cautious with Chromium flags: Playwright’s documentation warns, “Use custom browser args at your own risk, as some of them may break Playwright functionality.” Do not add a generic GPU flag simply because the output is black. If you have evidence for testing a particular argument, preserve the baseline, add only that argument, compare results, and remove it if it does not resolve the issue or causes other browser behavior to change.

5. Check browser installation and CI prerequisites
In a minimal Linux container or CI image, confirm that Playwright’s browser and operating-system dependencies are installed before treating a rendering failure as a GPU issue. Playwright documents this installation command for Chromium and its OS dependencies:
npx playwright install --with-deps chromiumFor headed Linux CI, also ensure an X server such as Xvfb is available. If the screenshot works locally but not in CI, compare the OS or image, browser version, mode, dependencies, and launch settings rather than assuming the application page or the GPU alone is responsible.
6. A practical comparison order
- Verify the artifact: confirm the output file, URL, page state, viewport or full-page option, and screenshot scale/background settings.
- Capture evidence: retain the screenshot and a trace with screenshots and DOM snapshots.
- Compare modes: test headed where supported, then compare the default headless shell with
channel: 'chromium'. - Record and align environments: note Playwright and browser versions, OS or container, hardware context, settings, and power conditions; compare like with like.
- Read launch logs: rerun with
DEBUG=pw:browserand inspect browser errors. - Verify dependencies: install Chromium’s documented OS dependencies and configure Xvfb when headed Linux CI requires it.
- Experiment narrowly: test a custom argument only when the evidence points to it, changing one setting at a time and keeping a rollback path.
