If a Playwright screenshot is taller than you need, change the capture area: omit fullPage (or set it to false) for the viewport, set a bounded clip for a rectangle, or capture a single locator for one element. If the content area is right but the output has too many pixels on a high-DPI setup, use scale: 'css'. These options solve different problems: fullPage controls how much of the page is captured; scale controls pixel density.
Choose the capture area that matches the result you want
Playwright’s Screenshots documentation describes a full-page capture as a screenshot of the “full scrollable page.” The default is not full-page: fullPage is false unless you enable it.

Use viewport, clip, or element capture
Capture only the viewport
Remove fullPage: true from the screenshot call, or explicitly set it to false. The output height then follows the viewport height rather than the page’s entire scrollable height.

Use clip when you need a defined rectangle rather than the whole viewport or document. Supply all four coordinates and dimensions. The values below are examples, not a universal size limit.

For a card, chart, header, or other component, take a locator screenshot instead of capturing the full document. This scopes the screenshot to the element selected by the locator.

Distinguish page height from output pixel density
scale does not shorten the captured page. The Page API documents scale: 'css' as producing one output image pixel per CSS pixel. scale: 'device' captures device pixels, which can produce larger pixel dimensions on a high-DPI setup. If the screenshot covers the right area but is unexpectedly large in pixels, choose CSS scale:

Set the viewport before navigation when layout depends on it
page.setViewportSize({ width, height }) changes the browser viewport and resets the screen size. A viewport change matters directly for viewport screenshots and can affect responsive layout. Playwright advises setting the viewport before navigation for sites that do not expect phone-like resizing. A full-page screenshot still requests the full scrollable extent even when the viewport is shorter.

Troubleshoot an unexpectedly tall or oversized screenshot
- The screenshot includes more page than intended: check whether the call sets
fullPage: true. Omit it or set it tofalsefor viewport-only output; useclipor a locator screenshot for a smaller target. - The screenshot covers the right content but has too many pixels: inspect the
scaleoption. Use'css'for one output pixel per CSS pixel; this changes pixel density, not capture coverage. - The viewport screenshot has the wrong layout or height: set the viewport size before navigation, then capture. Responsive sites may lay out differently at different viewport dimensions.
- A very tall capture crashes, truncates, or fails at a hard dimension: check the installed Playwright and browser versions and investigate that specific failure. The official documentation cited here does not establish a universal maximum screenshot height, so there is no single documented threshold to apply across versions.

Does Playwright have a documented universal maximum full-page screenshot height?
The official references cited here do not specify a universal maximum height. A failure tied to image dimensions should be investigated against the Playwright and browser versions in use.

Will changing the viewport height limit a full-page screenshot?
No. A viewport change affects the browser viewport, but fullPage: true still requests the full scrollable page.
