PlayStation Portal Alternatives for Handheld PS5 Remote Play

A Logitech G Cloud, a compatible phone with Backbone One-PlayStation Edition, or another supported device can stream PS5 games through Remote Play. Compare the form factors and check compatibility before buying.

If you want to play PS5 games away from your TV without buying a PlayStation Portal, the clearest options are a Logitech G Cloud handheld or a compatible phone paired with a Backbone One-PlayStation Edition controller. You can also use Sony’s PS Remote Play app on supported phones, tablets, and computers. These alternatives stream from your console; their compatibility and controls differ, and the available product information does not establish that they perform like Portal.

Which PlayStation Portal alternative fits your setup?

Option Form factor Console needed for PS5 Remote Play Other supported uses
Logitech G Cloud Standalone handheld Yes; Remote Play streams from your PS5 Logitech lists other cloud-gaming and remote-play uses; check its product page for current details.
Phone plus Backbone One-PlayStation Edition Phone with an attached controller Yes; Remote Play streams from your PS5 Uses a phone you already own, subject to phone and controller compatibility.
Other supported phone, tablet, or computer Existing device; controls depend on the platform and setup Yes; Sony says a PS4 or PS5 is required to stream to other devices PS Remote Play is available across supported platforms, with platform-specific apps and controls.
PlayStation Portal Dedicated Sony remote-play handheld Yes; Portal requires a PS5 Sony also documents cloud streaming for eligible catalog games; check current eligibility and catalog support.

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s official PS Remote Play documentation says: “A PS4 or PS5 console is required to stream your games to other devices but if using PlayStation Portal remote player, a PS5 console is required.” For Portal alternatives specifically intended for PS5 play, the key point is that Remote Play streams from your console rather than replacing it.

Logitech G Cloud: a standalone handheld

Logitech lists PS5 Remote Play among the uses supported by the G Cloud, alongside other remote-play and cloud-gaming options. It is the most direct alternative here if you want a handheld-shaped device rather than a controller mounted on your phone. See Logitech’s G Cloud product information for its current feature and service details.

Its standalone design means you do not need to occupy your phone while playing. The trade-off is that it is a separate device to buy and carry. Logitech’s supported-use list establishes compatibility and intended uses, not equivalent latency, picture quality, battery life, or comfort compared with Portal.

Phone plus Backbone One-PlayStation Edition

A compatible phone and Backbone One-PlayStation Edition turn a phone into a handheld-style Remote Play setup. Sony’s US Remote Play page documents compatibility with iOS 15 or later phones; Backbone says Android users who want PS Remote Play need the PlayStation Edition. Read Sony’s phone compatibility guidance and Backbone’s FAQ before buying.

This option reuses a phone you already own, but it is not a universal fit: check the exact phone, operating system, and controller edition. Backbone maintains model-specific compatibility information. The phone-based setup can be attractive if you value portability and reuse; it also means relying on your phone and its battery while you play.

Use PS Remote Play on another supported device

You do not necessarily need a dedicated handheld or a Backbone controller. Sony offers the free PS Remote Play app for supported devices, including phones, tablets, and computers. Its UK support page explains device support and states that a PS4 or PS5 console is needed to stream to other devices: Sony PS Remote Play.

Controls vary by platform and setup, so check the app’s current requirements for the device you intend to use. Sony’s app and support information are the best place to confirm what is supported; a device being able to run an app does not by itself establish that every control arrangement will suit your games.

How Portal differs from these alternatives

Portal is Sony’s dedicated remote-play handheld for streaming PS5 games over Wi-Fi. Sony also documents cloud streaming for eligible catalog games, a distinct capability from streaming a game running on your console. Because availability and catalog eligibility can change, confirm the current details on Sony’s PlayStation Portal page.

G Cloud is also a standalone handheld, but its product information lists multiple gaming services and uses. A phone-and-controller setup instead centers on a compatible phone and the PS Remote Play app. Choose based on whether you want a dedicated device, prefer to reuse a phone, or need access to the other services supported by a particular handheld—not on an assumed performance ranking.

What to check before choosing

  • Console: For Remote Play to another device, have a PS4 or PS5; Portal specifically requires a PS5.
  • Phone and software: Confirm the phone model and operating-system requirements on Sony’s current support page.
  • Controller edition: For Backbone-based PS Remote Play, verify that you are choosing the PlayStation Edition, especially for Android use.
  • App and controls: Check the current PS Remote Play app requirements and the control options for your platform.
  • Network: Remote Play depends on the network connection between your console and the device. Support documentation does not establish a universal latency or image-quality result across setups.
  • Purpose: Decide whether you want only console streaming or a handheld that also supports other cloud-gaming or remote-play services.

Prices, regional availability, and controlled side-by-side results for latency, image quality, battery life, or comfort are not established here. Product support confirms that these options can be used for Remote Play, not that they will feel identical to Portal.
