Neither option is always cheaper. Buying one or two specific games can cost less than a subscription, while Extra or Premium may offer better value if you plan to play several games included in their rotating catalog. Compare the titles you actually want, their current prices, and any PlayStation Plus tier you need for online play over the same period.

Use the same region and time period for both options—typically one year. Look up current prices for the exact games and editions you intend to play, rather than assuming a standard price or relying on an old sale.

- List your likely games. Include only games you expect to play during the comparison period.
- Check the current price of each. Use the relevant PlayStation Store or retailer listing and make sure you are comparing the edition you want.
- Add the individual game prices. If buying discs, count possible resale or lending only if that matters to you; resale value is not guaranteed.
- Add any Plus plan you still need. If you want online multiplayer for purchased games, include the cost of the appropriate plan. A subscription is not a substitute for games that are outside its benefits.
- Compare with the tier you would actually choose. Do not compare your game total only with Premium if Essential would meet your needs, or count catalog titles you do not intend to play.
- Check catalog availability. Count Extra or Premium catalog games only if you expect to play them while they are available and your membership is active.
In short: buying individually costs the current total for your chosen games, plus any Plus plan you still need for online play. Subscribing costs the relevant plan price, plus any games you want that are not included in its benefits. There is no reliable universal break-even number of games: the result depends on your titles, local prices, time period, tier, and multiplayer needs.
When buying games individually may cost less
Buying is often the more straightforward comparison if you want just a few specific titles and do not need the subscription’s other benefits. You pay for the games you choose, rather than for a catalog you may barely use. Purchased games also are not the same as catalog access: Plus catalog availability depends on the membership and can change.

Physical copies may be lent or resold, which can improve their value for some players, but neither resale nor a particular recovery amount is assured. Digital and physical editions may also differ, so compare like with like.

When Extra or Premium may be worth the subscription
Extra or Premium can make sense if you expect to play several games that are currently in the Game Catalog during the subscription period. The value depends on whether those games are ones you would otherwise buy and whether you can play them before they leave the catalog. PlayStation notes that catalog games may have end dates.

Extra includes Game Catalog access. Premium includes Extra benefits and adds features such as the Classics Catalog, game trials, and cloud streaming. Those additions matter only if you will use them; do not treat the higher tier’s broader list of benefits as savings by itself.
Include online multiplayer in the comparison
Buying a game does not necessarily eliminate the cost of Plus if you want to play that game online. PlayStation says, “For the majority of games that you have purchased on disc or downloaded from PlayStation Store, you need a PlayStation Plus membership plan to play online.” PlayStation also says most free-to-play games, including Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone, do not require a membership for online play.

So, if you buy a paid game and need online multiplayer, add the cost of the Plus tier you choose to the individual-buying total. If you play only free-to-play games that do not require membership, that cost may not belong in your comparison.
What happens to games and benefits when Plus ends?
Catalog access and monthly games claimed through Plus are subscription-dependent. PlayStation Support says that when a subscription ends, access to Plus benefits—including monthly games, online storage, and online multiplayer—ends. Monthly games claimed through Plus are unavailable after membership ends.

That is different from a game bought at a Plus discount: PlayStation says discounted purchases are yours to keep. A discount on a purchase is not the same as temporary access through the Game Catalog.
