For resisting phishing during sign-in, a PlayStation passkey has the stronger design. It uses a cryptographic credential tied to the PlayStation service domain, so a lookalike site cannot simply trick you into handing over the passkey as it can with a password and a one-time code. That advantage is specifically about sign-in phishing: it is not a guarantee against compromised devices, unsafe account recovery, or every other route to account takeover.
How passkeys and PlayStation 2SV differ
Passkeys use a domain-bound credential
A passkey is based on a public-and-private key pair. PlayStation stores the public key; the private key remains with the device or credential provider used to authenticate. The credential is bound to the service domain, which is why it resists a phishing page posing as PlayStation. If a biometric prompt is used to approve sign-in, FIDO says the biometric information stays on the device; it is not sent to Sony as the passkey.
Depending on the credential provider, passkeys may sync across devices or be bound to one device. Synced credentials can make another device available for sign-in; a device-bound passkey makes retaining or replacing that device more important. Follow Sony’s PlayStation account steps when configuring your account. FIDO Alliance explains passkey authentication.
Two-step verification adds a code after the password
PlayStation 2SV requires your sign-in ID and password, followed by a code delivered by SMS or generated in an authenticator app when Sony requests verification. Sony lists triggers such as the first sign-in after enabling 2SV, signing in after manually signing out, resetting the password, or changing the sign-in ID or online ID. A code is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt. Sony’s PlayStation 2SV guide covers setup and sign-in.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key NFC via USB-A and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Security and recovery compared
| Factor | Passkey | PlayStation 2SV |
|---|---|---|
| Phishing resistance | Stronger against sign-in phishing: the cryptographic credential is tied to the service domain. This does not protect a compromised device or every recovery path. (FIDO Alliance) | Uses a password and a code entered by the user; the code may be requested through SMS or an authenticator app. (Sony) |
| What you need to sign in | A device, credential manager, or provider with access to the passkey; availability depends on whether it is synced or device-bound. (FIDO Alliance; Sony) | Your password and access to the registered phone/SMS or authenticator app when a code is requested. (Sony) |
| Recovery preparation | Set up another usable passkey or confirm a working alternative sign-in route. Sony says another device with the same registered verification method can be used to sign in and register a new passkey. (Sony) | Save backup codes when enabling 2SV. Sony provides 10 one-time codes. (Sony) |
| Compatibility | Sony says passkeys work on most mobile devices with iOS 16 or later or Android 9 or later, and recommends an up-to-date Safari, Chrome, or Edge browser. Some Android/Windows combinations and hardware security keys may have issues. (Sony) | Sony documents SMS and authenticator-app verification. Access depends on the registered phone or app. (Sony) |
| Account workflow | “Password at Checkout” is not compatible with a PlayStation account that has passkeys set up. (Sony) | The cited Sony guidance does not state a comparable checkout limitation. |
These distinctions do not establish a universal ranking for every device, credential provider, or recovery configuration. Sony’s support pages and FIDO’s technical explanation do not provide a PlayStation-specific comparative attack-rate study. FIDO’s authentication specifications describe the standards behind phishing-resistant authentication.
Which option should you choose?
- Choose a passkey if your devices and browser work with Sony’s flow and phishing resistance is your priority. Before relying on it, make sure you have a usable recovery route.
- Use 2SV if passkey setup or sign-in does not work on your devices, or you prefer the documented code-based flow. Choose SMS or an authenticator app based on which you can reliably access, and store the backup codes somewhere safe.
Sony notes that passkey sign-in may fail on some device combinations. Its suggested fallback is “Can’t Sign In with Passkey,” followed by sign-in through email or QR code where offered. You can also disable passkeys and create a password to return to password sign-in. Review Sony’s current instructions before changing the account method.

Set up a passkey on PlayStation
- Sign in to PlayStation Account Management and open Security.
- Enable Sign in with Passkey, select Create a Passkey, and follow the prompts on your device. On PS5, the route is Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security.
- If you use more than one device, add another passkey if available and confirm how you would recover access if your primary device is lost.
Sony describes support for most mobile devices running iOS 16 or later or Android 9 or later and recommends a current Safari, Chrome, or Edge browser. Compatibility is not universal: some Android and Windows combinations, as well as some hardware security keys, can have issues. Sony warns users to scan only trusted QR codes and to sign out on shared devices. See Sony’s passkey setup and troubleshooting guidance.

- Open Account Management, go to Security, and set up 2-step verification using SMS or an authenticator app.
- During setup, record the backup codes and store them somewhere safe. Sony says each of its 10 backup codes can be used once.
- Keep access to the registered phone or authenticator app. If you lose access and have no backup code or other recovery route, Sony directs you to PlayStation Support.
Sony’s 2SV instructions explain the verification flow and backup codes. For passkey recovery or trouble signing in, use Sony’s passkey support page; Sony also describes account recovery options for 2SV issues at Help with 2-step verification issues.
