On August 18, 2026, Sony listed Account Management, Gaming and Social, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Direct as running, but availability can change by region and service. If the page shows an incident, waiting is safer than changing console or router settings. If every service is running, test the console connection, restart the console and network equipment, then isolate Wi-Fi, account, game-server, and console causes.
Is PlayStation Network down right now?
Use Sony’s PlayStation Service Status page before resetting anything. It reports separate categories, including Account Management, Gaming and Social, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Direct. A problem with one category is not necessarily a total PSN outage: the Store can fail while online play works, or sign-in can fail while other pages remain available.

The page is regional and live. The United States view may not exactly match availability elsewhere, and an “all services running” message does not rule out a short-lived or account-specific problem. User-report sites can suggest a wider incident, but only Sony’s status page confirms Sony’s service state.
- If Sony reports an affected service: wait, monitor the status page, and retry after Sony reports recovery.
- Do not factory-reset the console, delete your account, change several router settings, or buy PlayStation Plus to compensate for an outage.
Identify what is actually failing
“PSN not loading” can describe different failures. Note which one applies before troubleshooting:

- PS5 or PS4 cannot sign in.
- PlayStation Store is blank, spins indefinitely, or shows an error.
- Friends, messages, parties, or Gaming and Social pages do not load.
- PlayStation Plus information or downloads do not appear.
- The console says it has Wi-Fi or internet but cannot sign in to PSN.
- Only one game’s online mode fails.
These distinctions matter. A service-specific Sony incident, a home-network fault, an account prompt, and a publisher’s game-server outage can look identical from the console’s loading screen.
Use this decision tree to separate PSN, network, account, and game problems
- Many people cannot use several PSN services: a Sony outage or maintenance event is likely.
- Other devices in the home also lose internet: investigate the modem, router, or ISP.
- Only one console fails: suspect its saved network settings, software, account, or hardware.
- A phone hotspot works but home Wi-Fi does not: the home router, ISP path, NAT, DNS, filtering, or Wi-Fi is the likely area.
- The Store fails while multiplayer and sign-in work: suspect a Store-specific issue, stale network state, filtering, or an account/payment prompt.
- Only one game fails: check that publisher’s servers, game updates, and account-linking status.
- The PlayStation App or browser works but the console does not: focus on the console and its local network, while allowing for regional or account differences.
These are diagnostic inferences, not guarantees. Record the exact error code and which tests succeed before escalating.
Fix PSN not loading on PS5
1. Run the PS5 connection test
Open Settings → Network → Settings → Set Up Internet Connection, then use the available connection-test option. Wording can vary with system-software revisions. Record whether the failure occurs while obtaining an IP address, reaching the internet, signing in to PlayStation Network, negotiating NAT, or measuring speed. A successful internet test does not prove that PSN authentication succeeded.
Sony’s connectivity guidance is available at PlayStation Connectivity Support.

2. Fully restart the console
Choose the power-off or restart command rather than merely returning to the home screen or using Rest Mode. Restarting is appropriate when menus or the Store are stuck, sign-in timed out, or the problem began after an update. Sony recommends restarting for several PSN connection errors, including WS-116420-4 and WS-116414-7.

3. Power-cycle the modem and router
- Turn off the PS5.
- Turn off the modem and router.
- Leave them off for at least five minutes.
- Turn on the modem and wait for it to reconnect.
- Turn on the router if it is separate, and wait until it is fully online.
- Start the PS5 and test PSN again.
This is a restart, not a factory reset. A factory reset erases network configuration and is not an early PSN fix. Sony documents the five-minute interval in its guidance for WS-116420-4 and WS-115338-1.
4. Test Ethernet or improve Wi-Fi
Connect the PS5 directly to the router with Ethernet if possible. This removes many wireless variables and is a better diagnostic than changing DNS first. For Wi-Fi, move the console closer to the router, reduce obstructions and interference, try another available band, pause heavy downloads or streaming, and temporarily avoid mesh extenders or nodes.
A high advertised download speed does not guarantee PSN access. Packet loss, latency, DNS resolution, NAT, and blocked traffic can matter more than bandwidth.
5. Reconfigure the saved connection
Return to Settings → Network → Settings → Set Up Internet Connection and set the connection up again. Begin with the normal automatic choices for IP address, DHCP host name, and MTU. Use Custom settings only when the basic setup fails, and write down existing values before changing them.
6. Install system and router updates
For PS5, check Settings → System → System Software → System Software Update and Settings. Also check the router manufacturer’s instructions for firmware updates; menus differ by vendor. Sony’s connectivity hub covers current PS5 and PS4 setup and update links: PlayStation Connectivity Support.

7. Try DNS only after basic checks
DNS translates service names into network addresses. Sony says changing DNS may temporarily improve some connections, but it does not prescribe one provider or guarantee a fix. DNS changes will not repair a Sony outage, weak Wi-Fi, packet loss, authentication failure, or a suspended account. Save the original settings and change only one variable at a time.
8. Treat ports and static IP as advanced steps
Sony lists these PS5 troubleshooting ports: TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, and 3480; UDP 3478, 3479, and 49152–65535. Port forwarding is not a guaranteed solution for a Store spinner or sign-in failure. Router model, NAT arrangement, ISP policy, and carrier-grade NAT affect the result, and careless forwarding can create security and maintenance problems. Sony advises contacting the ISP for help with router and port settings; see WS-116420-4 guidance.
Fix PSN not loading on PS4
1. Test the connection
Open Settings → Network → Test Internet Connection. The PS4 User Guide documents this path. To recreate the connection, use Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection, then choose Wi-Fi or LAN and start with Easy setup.
2. Restart, power-cycle, and test wired networking
Fully restart the PS4. If that does not help, turn off the console, modem, and router; wait at least five minutes; bring the modem and router back online; then test again. If you normally use Wi-Fi, try a direct LAN cable or move the console nearer to the router.
3. Update software and review the account
Install any pending PS4 system-software update and check the router manufacturer’s firmware instructions. If the network test passes but sign-in fails, use PlayStation Support in a browser to look for a password, passkey, two-step-verification, security, suspension, or updated-terms prompt. Do not repeatedly submit credentials when you are unsure of the password.

What common error codes suggest
Error codes identify a symptom, not always a single cause. Search the exact code on Sony’s support site after checking status and performing the least-invasive steps.
| Error | Sony’s description | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| WS-116420-4 | Unable to connect to the server. | Check status, restart the console, try Ethernet, restart the modem/router, then reconfigure networking. |
| WS-115338-1 | Connection may be affected by maintenance or service conditions. | Check status, reset the saved connection, restart the modem/router, and retry later. |
| WS-116486-6 | Issue connecting to the server. | Check status, restart the router, reduce other network traffic, wait, and retry. |
| WS-116414-7 | Network connection error. | Check status, restart the console and router, and try again later. |
When PSN works but one game does not
If sign-in, friends, and the Store load normally but one title cannot connect, check the game publisher’s server-status page and official channels. Install the game’s updates and verify publisher-account linking. The publisher may operate matchmaking or authentication separately from PSN, and an online service may have been discontinued while PSN remains available.
Check PlayStation Plus and account requirements
PlayStation Plus is an entitlement issue, not a network repair. Online multiplayer may require an active subscription, subject to Sony’s terms and exceptions; free-to-play games can have different requirements. PSN sign-in and Store access do not automatically require buying Plus. See Sony’s PlayStation Network Terms of Service.
If only one account fails, check its password or passkey, two-step verification, email access, security notices, suspension status, and any terms prompt through PlayStation Support. If several accounts fail on the same console, a console, network, or service issue becomes more likely.
When to contact Sony or your ISP
Contact PlayStation Support or Repairs when:
- Sony reports no outage, but the problem persists after restarting, power-cycling, and reconfiguring.
- The console cannot complete network setup on multiple networks.
- The same error code returns repeatedly.
- The issue may involve account security, suspension, or hardware.
Use the official PlayStation Support hub and have the console model, exact code, status result, and connection-test results ready.
Contact your ISP when:
- Other household devices also lose internet.
- The modem shows an error or repeatedly drops its connection.
- The console works through a phone hotspot but not home internet.
- NAT or port behavior appears controlled upstream.
What not to do
- Do not factory-reset the console for a temporary PSN incident.
- Do not rebuild databases or delete data unless Sony’s instructions specifically match the symptom.
- Do not change DNS, ports, static IP, and multiple Wi-Fi settings simultaneously.
- Do not assume a few outage reports prove a global outage.
- Do not buy PlayStation Plus, a VPN, paid DNS, or an expensive “gaming” cable as a substitute for diagnosis.
- Do not promise yourself a restoration time Sony has not published.
Will offline games work during a PSN outage?
It depends on the game, licensing checks, console activation, and whether the title requires online services. A PSN outage does not guarantee that every offline game will launch, nor does it make every single-player title unavailable.
