If Windows 11 shows the wrong hour or date, first check the time zone; a clock that is off by a fixed number of hours often reflects the wrong zone, not failed synchronization. Then enable automatic time and daylight-saving adjustment as appropriate, select Sync now, and investigate Windows Time, network access, or the hardware clock if the problem returns.
Start with the right diagnosis
Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time. If your Windows build uses different labels, search Settings for Date & time. These controls are documented by Microsoft’s Windows date and time settings guide.
- Wrong by a consistent number of hours: check the selected time zone and daylight-saving setting first. This is a useful clue, not proof.
- Minutes drift or the time becomes wrong again: Windows may not be synchronizing with a time source, or the hardware clock may be losing time.
- Correct time, different appearance: 12-hour versus 24-hour display, hidden seconds, or a hidden taskbar clock is a display issue, not a clock correction. Adjust the taskbar clock controls on the Date & time page.
- Only one app is wrong: check that app’s time-zone settings before changing Windows.
Check the time zone and automatic settings
- Go to Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Check Time zone. If it is wrong, turn Set time zone automatically off and choose the correct zone manually. You can turn automatic detection back on afterward if it reliably identifies your location.
- Turn Set time automatically on.
- When available and appropriate for your location, enable Adjust for daylight saving time automatically. Microsoft notes that daylight-saving adjustment depends on the time-zone setting.
- Select Sync now.
Do not compensate for a wrong time zone by setting the clock manually: Windows can apply the incorrect offset again later. A time-zone mistake can produce a one-hour difference, but a different region can result in a larger offset.
If Sync now does not correct the clock
First distinguish a failed synchronization from a successful sync with the wrong time zone. To inspect synchronization, open Command Prompt as administrator: open Start, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator. Then run:
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
w32tm /query /status
The status output can show the current source, last successful synchronization, and an error. Microsoft identifies w32tm as its preferred command-line tool for configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting Windows Time (Windows Time tools and settings).
Try requesting a synchronization:
w32tm /resync
If it succeeds but the displayed time remains offset, return to the time-zone settings. If it fails, note the exact error; it can point to an unavailable source, network restriction, or domain configuration problem.
Restart Windows Time
From the elevated Command Prompt, restart the service and request another sync:
Recommended Free Tools
net stop w32time
net start w32time
w32tm /resync
Microsoft documents these as standard Windows Time troubleshooting commands (Windows Time synchronization troubleshooting). If a command returns an error, keep its exact wording rather than guessing at the next fix.

You can also ask Windows to rediscover time sources before syncing:
w32tm /resync /rediscover
The /rediscover option redetects network configuration and time sources before resynchronization. See Microsoft’s command reference.
Find out which time source Windows is using
Run these commands in the elevated Command Prompt:
w32tm /query /source
w32tm /query /peers
w32tm /query /sourcereports the active source.w32tm /query /peerslists configured peers.- A named NTP server suggests a manual source; a domain-related source is expected on many domain-joined computers.
- Local CMOS Clock means Windows is relying on the hardware clock rather than a successful network time source. It is a clue, not proof of a failed battery.
For a standalone or workgroup PC, a manual NTP source may be configured when appropriate. This example uses time.windows.com with the client-mode flag 0x8:

w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:"time.windows.com,0x8" /syncfromflags:manual /update
net stop w32time
net start w32time
w32tm /resync
Use a source appropriate to your network, and do not override a company-managed configuration without authorization. Microsoft documents this configuration in its Windows Time troubleshooting guidance.

When Windows says no time data was available
The error “The computer did not resync because no time data was available” does not necessarily mean Windows is corrupted. Windows Time uses NTP over UDP port 123; normal web browsing can work while NTP traffic is blocked. DNS must also resolve the configured server. Microsoft lists these network and source checks in its troubleshooting guide for this error.
- Confirm the computer is online and the configured server name is correct and available.
- Check whether a VPN changes DNS or firewall behavior.
- Ask whether security software, a router, public Wi-Fi, or a corporate firewall blocks UDP 123.
- On a school or business network, check whether devices must use an internal time server.
- On a domain network, the domain controller may not be advertising a usable source.
For administrators, Microsoft recommends checking for UDP 123 requests and responses when diagnosing this error. If you lack access to network controls, provide the exact w32tm error and source information to the network administrator.
Understand workgroup service startup before changing it
On a standalone workgroup PC, Windows Time may use Trigger-Start behavior rather than running continuously. Microsoft says the service normally has a Manual startup value in this setup and can be started by triggers or the scheduled Time Synchronization task. A stopped service between synchronization events is not, by itself, evidence of a fault. See Microsoft’s explanation of Windows Time on workgroup computers.

Only consider changing startup behavior if the normal settings, sync, and source checks do not resolve a recurring problem. In an elevated Command Prompt, Microsoft documents these alternatives:

sc triggerinfo w32time start/networkon stop/networkoff.
These are advanced workarounds, not routine first steps. Changing the service to Automatic (Delayed Start) through the Services console is another documented option, but it can interact with the built-in synchronization task. Do not change both mechanisms blindly; follow the same Microsoft guidance for the workgroup configuration.
Check the hardware clock if time resets after shutdown
If the time is wrong immediately in BIOS/UEFI before Windows starts, suspect the real-time clock, firmware, or CMOS/RTC battery. If it is correct there but wrong after Windows loads, investigate Windows settings, synchronization, or policy instead.
- Shut down the computer, then start it and enter BIOS/UEFI immediately.
- Check the hardware clock before Windows loads.
- If needed, correct it temporarily, shut down fully, wait, and check whether it resets.
A weak CMOS/RTC battery is plausible when the date and time reset after the computer loses power, especially on an older desktop. A BIOS clock that remains correct does not establish that the battery is at fault. Consult the computer or motherboard manufacturer before replacing a battery; laptop designs and service procedures vary, and sealed devices should not be opened without model-specific instructions.

Work or school computers
Active Directory domain members generally use the domain hierarchy (the NT5DS time-source type), while standalone computers generally use NTP configuration. The hierarchy ultimately depends on a reliable upstream source; see Microsoft’s explanations of Windows Time tools and settings and how Windows Time works. Forcing a public server on a work computer can conflict with policy or mask a domain-controller problem.

Dual-boot systems
Windows and Linux may interpret the motherboard clock differently. A fixed offset that appears after switching operating systems can indicate a local-time-versus-UTC mismatch. If the clock loses time while powered off, investigate the hardware-clock path instead.
Virtual machines
A virtual machine may receive time from its host, guest tools, or Windows Time. Competing correction mechanisms can produce jumps; check the VM platform’s time settings as well as the guest’s Windows configuration.
Use service re-registration only as a later repair
If service restart, source checks, and network diagnosis have not helped, re-registering Windows Time is a more disruptive step. Run these commands in an elevated Command Prompt:
w32tm /unregister
w32tm /register
net start w32time
w32tm /resync
/unregister removes the Windows Time service registration; /register adds it again with default configuration. A restart may be needed, and custom source settings may need to be recreated. Microsoft documents these options in its Windows Time command reference. Avoid registry edits as an early fix: they can be difficult to reverse and conflict with policy. Microsoft warns that incorrect changes can cause serious problems (Windows Time configuration values reverting).
