PlayStation also offers SMS as a separate 2SV option.
What the PlayStation authenticator app does
An authenticator app generates a verification code for your PlayStation Network sign-in. After entering your sign-in ID and password, you enter the code to complete sign-in when PlayStation asks for it. PlayStation says a code may be requested the first time you sign in after enabling 2SV, after you manually sign out, after resetting your password, or after changing your sign-in ID or online ID.

A sign-in code is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt. If it expires, use the resend option on the sign-in screen to request another code. See PlayStation’s account and security guidance.
Which authenticator app should you use?
PlayStation lists Authy, Google Authenticator, and Microsoft Authenticator as examples; it does not rank them or compare their backup, privacy, or recovery features. Choose an app you can access when signing in, and keep the device with the app available.

If you would rather receive codes by text message, SMS is another 2SV method. PlayStation also describes passkeys as an alternative sign-in approach, but its 2SV setup instructions treat passkeys separately from authenticator-app enrollment. Set up an authenticator app for PlayStation
Have your phone or tablet ready. During enrollment, PlayStation displays a QR code and an alphanumeric key; scan the code with your chosen app, or enter the key manually if scanning does not work. Then enter a code from the app to confirm enrollment.

Using a web browser
- Sign in to PlayStation Account Management.
- Open Security, then choose Edit next to 2-step Verification Status.
- Select Authenticator App.
- Scan the displayed QR code in your authenticator app, or enter the alphanumeric key manually.
- Enter the verification code shown in the app to activate 2SV.
- Save the backup codes displayed during setup.
On PS5
- Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Security > 2-Step Verification.
- Choose Authenticator App, then scan the QR code or enter the key manually.
- Enter a code from the app to confirm setup, and save the backup codes.
On PS4
- Go to Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Security > 2-Step Verification.
- Choose the authenticator-app option and follow the prompts to scan the QR code or enter the key manually.
- Confirm with a code from the app, then save the backup codes.
Save backup codes before you need them
PlayStation provides 10 backup codes when you enable 2SV. Each code can be used once. Keep them somewhere you can reach if you lose access to the enrolled phone; they are the fallback for signing in when you cannot receive or generate the usual verification code.

What to do if you cannot get a verification code
- You have a backup code: Sign in and choose the option to use a backup code.
- You cannot access your phone or mobile number, or have no backup codes: Contact PlayStation Support for 2SV recovery.
- You receive unexpected verification messages and cannot change your sign-in method: PlayStation directs you to Support to restore account access.
