Sony has not announced a PlayStation 6 release date or launch window. In its May 8, 2026 investor Q&A, Sony said it had made no decisions about the timing or pricing of its next-generation platforms. The January 2028 date Sony later announced for ending physical-disc production for new PlayStation games is a separate policy date, not a PS6 launch announcement.
Has Sony announced a PS6 release date?
No. As of October 4, 2026, Sony’s official newsroom listing contained no later PS6 release-date announcement, and the company’s latest direct statement on next-generation timing in the materials reviewed was its May 8, 2026 investor Q&A. Sony said: “As for next-generation platforms, no decisions have been made regarding timing or pricing, and we plan to consider these matters while monitoring future conditions.” Sony’s Q&A summary is an English summary of a session conducted in Japanese, not a direct translation of the live discussion.

Sony tied its answer to memory costs and supply conditions, rather than announcing a release plan. The company said higher memory prices increase both component and manufacturing costs; passing those costs to customers could affect console adoption. It said it would consider hardware-cost reductions, sales and go-to-market strategies, and possible business-model adjustments while monitoring conditions.

Sony also described the prevailing view at the time of its May 2026 Q&A as expecting elevated memory prices and tight supply-demand conditions through 2027. That was a dated assessment of the market, not a forecast for when PS6 will launch or a guarantee of how conditions will develop.
In the same Q&A, Sony reported 125 million monthly active users on its platform, a figure it said had continued to grow. That is platform context, not evidence of a PS6 release date, sales target, or demand forecast.

Does the January 2028 disc announcement mean PS6 launches in 2028?
No. On July 1, 2026, PlayStation announced that production of physical game discs for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles would end starting in January 2028. Sony said those new games would be available digitally through PlayStation Store and retailers. The policy does not affect games already released on disc or games releasing in disc format before January 2028.
