To play music from a USB flash drive, copy supported audio files onto the drive, plug it into a player that accepts USB storage as a media source, select USB as the input, and then choose a track or folder. Whether this works depends on the exact device. A USB port does not guarantee playback, and the supported file systems and audio formats differ between manufacturers and between models. Check your player’s manual before you copy files or format the drive.
What your player must support
Three conditions have to be met before any song will play, and the first is the one most often overlooked:

- USB storage playback. The USB port must be designed to read music files from a storage device. Some ports are provided for other purposes, so confirm this in the manual or manufacturer support page for your exact model.
- A supported file system. The drive has to be formatted in a file system the player can read. The examples below range from FAT16 and FAT32 to exFAT and NTFS.
- A supported audio format. The file extension is not enough on its own. The player must also decode the codec inside the file, and the lists for different devices do not match.
Manufacturer instructions for car systems, televisions, and home audio systems follow this same pattern, which is why the manual, not a general rule, decides compatibility.
Check file systems and audio formats for your model
The table below shows what the cited manufacturer pages list. These are examples from specific products, not a universal standard. A file system or format that works on one player may be rejected by another.

| Example | Device type | File systems listed | Audio formats listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford owner manual, audio system for vehicles without SYNC 3 (one specific vehicle configuration) | Car audio | exFAT, FAT, FAT32, NTFS | MP3, M4B, WMA, PCM, WAV, AAC, APE, FLAC |
| Sony car stereo help article (modified 2024-11-01) | Car stereo | FAT16, FAT32 | Not stated on this page; check the receiver’s manual |
| PURE support article for the Classic H4i and Classic C-D6i (dated 2025-07-29) | Home audio | Listed in the article for these two models; confirm the exact entry there | MP3, AAC/AAC+, OGG, FLAC |
| Sony USB storage page for the HT-A3000 home theater soundbar (updated 2026-01-19) | Television or soundbar | Not stated; the page notes that file-system support varies | Not stated on this page |
The Ford list is the broadest of these examples, but it describes one vehicle configuration. The Sony car stereo article also notes that a USB flash drive can be used if it is formatted in a compatible way, which means the format of the drive matters more than its brand. Use the list for your exact model, and treat the other rows as illustrations only.
Prepare the drive
- Open the manual or support page for your exact player model and note its listed file systems and audio formats.
- Convert or re-download any tracks that are not in a listed format. Music bought or downloaded with digital rights management (DRM) or copy protection may not play on some Sony receivers, even when the file type otherwise matches.
- Back up the music on the drive first. Sony advises backing up media stored on a USB device, and formatting erases everything on the drive.
- If the drive needs formatting, format it in one of the file systems the manual lists, such as FAT32 for the Sony car stereo example or exFAT where the Ford list includes it.
- Copy the audio files onto the drive. Keep the originals on your computer until playback is confirmed.
This guide does not recommend a particular drive capacity, brand, or speed. The only drive requirement that the cited manuals establish is the file system your player lists.

Connect the drive and select USB
- With the player on, plug the drive into the player’s USB port.
- Wait for the player to read the drive. Sony’s UK troubleshooting guidance for car stereo receivers says recognition can take roughly 20–30 seconds.
- Select USB as the source using the player’s source or input control. In a car stereo, this is typically a source selection; on some home systems, you choose USB and then browse all music or folders. Menu labels vary by model.
Choose tracks and browse folders
Once the drive is selected, use the player’s controls to choose a track, pause, skip, or move between folders. The Ford owner manual describes track selection and category browsing for its system, and PURE’s instructions for the Classic H4i and Classic C-D6i describe track and folder browsing. Not every player offers the same navigation options, so check whether yours browses by folder, artist, or album before you organise the drive.

Troubleshooting common failures
The drive is not recognized
- Confirm that the player supports both the drive’s file system and USB storage playback. The table above shows what each cited manufacturer lists.
- Wait the full recognition period before deciding the drive has failed.
- Reconnect the drive as directed in the product manual, and check the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance for your model. Sony’s UK car stereo troubleshooting page covers this case.
The drive appears, but songs do not play
- Check the audio format against the exact manual, not against a list for a different model.
- Remove or convert DRM-protected and copyright-protected files. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance identifies these as possible playback issues.
- Note that multichannel and lossless-compressed files may not play on some Sony receivers, even when other supported formats work. Test one standard file from the supported list to isolate the problem.
Some tracks are missing
- Check the file format and folder structure first. Files in unsupported formats may not appear in the browse list.
- Allow the player time to index the drive, and then check again.
- Do not assume a fixed file-count limit. The cited manuals do not establish a universal limit, and device behavior can differ between models.
Playback is unreliable
- Disconnect and reconnect the drive as the product manual directs, rather than removing it during playback.
- Consult the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions for your model.
- Do not conclude that a format is compatible because another device accepts it.
Car stereo, TV, or home audio
The cited sources support USB storage playback on car stereos, televisions and soundbars, and home audio systems. None of them establish that one device category is universally better. The same checks apply to each: whether USB storage playback is supported, which file systems and audio formats are listed, and what browsing controls are available. The Ford example describes a vehicle configuration, the Sony car stereo article covers car receivers, and the PURE and Sony BRAVIA pages cover home audio products, so the manual for your own device is the decisive reference.
