Yes—Kodi can play media directly from a WebDAV share, so you can avoid copying full video files to each device. Whether a particular 4K file plays well depends on its bitrate, the stability and capacity of the network path, and client compatibility; Kodi’s documented support is not a performance guarantee. Jellyfin’s Kodi add-on is a separate workflow: it can sync metadata, while its documented native mode expects NFS or Samba paths rather than WebDAV.
How direct WebDAV playback works
A WebDAV server exposes your media files over the network. A compatible client, such as Kodi, connects to the share and reads the selected file for playback. Kodi lists WebDAV as a supported network protocol and documents playing media from WebDAV shares: Kodi: Features and supported formats.

Can Kodi stream 4K from WebDAV?
Kodi’s WebDAV support establishes that the playback path is supported, not that every combination of server, file, network, and device will sustain 4K playback. The deciding factors include the file’s bitrate, the server’s upload capacity, the client’s available bandwidth, network stability, storage response, and whether the client can decode the video and audio formats.

There is no universal speed threshold established for this setup. A nominal connection speed alone cannot guarantee smooth playback: interruptions, competing network use, server-side limits, or an incompatible codec or HDR format can still cause buffering or prevent playback. Check the specific device’s format support and test with the files and network you intend to use.
Direct WebDAV versus Jellyfin’s Kodi options
“Stop syncing” can mean avoiding duplicate media files, or it can mean avoiding all local library data. Those are different outcomes. Kodi can play a file from a WebDAV share without first copying the full media file onto the client. Jellyfin’s Kodi add-on has two documented approaches with different requirements:

If your goal is to eliminate per-device video copies, direct WebDAV playback can meet it. If you also want Jellyfin to manage the library, choose the Kodi add-on mode that matches how the files are exposed; do not assume its native mode can read a WebDAV URL.
Using WebDAV-backed storage with Jellyfin
Jellyfin expects access to media through the filesystem. Its storage documentation describes using rclone to integrate cloud storage, and rclone documents configuring a WebDAV remote with a URL and credentials. These are general integration paths, not a guarantee that a particular provider, mount, or connection will perform reliably: Jellyfin: Storage and rclone: WebDAV.

For a Jellyfin library backed by remote storage, keep the Jellyfin database on local storage. Jellyfin warns that scheduled maintenance may remove library items if the media storage is unavailable when maintenance runs. It also recommends disabling image extraction for cloud storage because extraction requires downloading the whole file: Jellyfin: Storage.

Buffering means the client is not receiving or processing data quickly enough to maintain playback. The cause may be anywhere along the route from storage to screen, so check the whole path rather than assuming the WebDAV protocol itself is at fault.

- Compare file demand with available capacity. Higher-bitrate files need more sustained throughput. Consider server upload capacity, the client’s connection, other users, and competing traffic.
- Check stability as well as speed. Fluctuating connectivity, latency, or slow storage responses can interrupt delivery even when a speed test looks adequate.
- Confirm client compatibility. The client must support the file’s video and audio formats. A media server’s direct-play guidance also treats compatibility as a condition for playing a file without conversion: Plex: Streaming Media: Direct Play and Direct Stream.
- Review Kodi’s cache settings. Kodi documents configurable caching for internet filesystems, including WebDAV, with controls for memory size and read factor. These controls can help manage playback behavior but cannot fix an inadequate or unstable connection: Kodi Wiki: Settings/Services/Caching.
- Check remote bandwidth limits where applicable. Media-server guidance identifies available bandwidth as a factor in remote playback and transcoding decisions: Plex: Server Settings – Bandwidth and Transcoding Limits.
When this setup makes sense
- It is a good fit when the client supports WebDAV playback, the server and network can deliver the file reliably, and you want to avoid storing a complete media copy on each device.
- It needs more planning when playback depends on remote or cloud storage, because service availability, upload capacity, mount behavior, and library maintenance affect the experience.
- It is not a complete sync replacement if your aim is to remove every local trace of the library. Jellyfin’s add-on mode can synchronize metadata into Kodi’s local database, and playback clients may retain local data even when video files remain remote.
