Alexa can play music on multiple Echo devices at once, but whether they play the same song or different songs depends on the setup. Multi-Room Music synchronizes the same playback across compatible devices. Separate songs require independent streams allowed by your music service and plan.
Can two Echo devices play different songs at the same time?
They can if the music service and account plan allow simultaneous independent streams. Amazon Music’s FAQ says its Family Plan supports playback on up to six devices at the same time. Its Single Device plan is limited to one Echo or Fire TV device. These are Amazon Music terms, not universal Alexa limits; the FAQ result does not state a year, and plan terms can change. Check the current terms for your service before relying on a particular stream allowance.

Adding another Echo gives you another playback device, but does not itself grant another music stream. The service’s account and plan determine whether separate devices can stream separate tracks independently.
What Multi-Room Music does
Multi-Room Music plays the same music in sync on compatible Alexa-enabled devices, including devices in different rooms. It is for sharing one playback across the home, not for choosing a different song on each speaker. Amazon says audio from video content does not play on Multi-Room Music groups.

Set up a Multi-Room Music group
- Open the Alexa app and tap Devices.
- Tap the plus button, then choose Combine Speakers.
- Select Multi-Room Music and follow the app’s instructions.
Amazon says the app automatically creates an Everywhere Multi-Room Music group when there is more than one device. See Amazon’s Multi-Room Music setup instructions.
How a stereo pair differs
A stereo pair combines two compatible Echo devices in the same room so one plays the left channel and the other the right channel of the same music. It does not let the devices play two different songs. The pair shares audio settings. Amazon explains the distinction between Multi-Room Music and speaker sets.
