Umami is the practical default for a small site that mainly needs pageviews and referrers with a light self-hosted setup. Choose Plausible instead when a particularly polished dashboard, documented goals and custom events, or a managed cloud option matter more than minimizing infrastructure.
Both tools are privacy-focused alternatives to Google Analytics and both can run on infrastructure you control. The important difference is where complexity appears: Umami is presented as the lighter runtime and database path, while Plausible offers a broader documented conversion-reporting path and a managed service that shifts operations to its provider.

What Plausible and Umami have in common
Plausible and Umami are privacy-conscious web analytics products designed to avoid the surveillance-oriented model associated with many traditional analytics suites. Each can be self-hosted, allowing an operator to keep analytics data on a chosen server instead of sending it to a third-party advertising platform.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Plausible describes itself as a “simple, privacy-friendly alternative to Google Analytics.” Its product documentation says the standard approach uses no cookies, collects no personal data and does not require consent banners for the analytics implementation it documents. Umami is likewise positioned as a privacy-friendly analytics option, but the available product evidence does not establish a complete, version-specific list of its privacy controls. Review the current Umami documentation for the release you plan to deploy.
Self-hosting changes the responsibility model for both products. You avoid a software subscription for the community editions, but you become responsible for the server, database, backups, upgrades, security, capacity, uptime and recovery when something fails.

Infrastructure: which one is lighter?
Plausible Community Edition requirements
Plausible’s official self-hosting guide says, “Plausible Analytics is designed to be self-hosted via Docker.” The documented server prerequisites are specific:
- x86_64 architecture.
- SSE4.2 CPU support.
- Docker.
- A domain or subdomain that you can point through DNS editing.
That CPU instruction requirement matters when selecting an older server, ARM-only board or unusual virtual machine. An x86-64 mini PC or server with Docker support is the safe hardware class to investigate, but verify SSE4.2 before deployment. DNS access is also a real prerequisite: you need to create or change the record that sends the analytics hostname to the server.
Umami requirements
The comparative source lists Node.js 18.18 or newer and PostgreSQL 12.14 or newer for Umami. It characterizes that combination as a lighter infrastructure path for a site focused on pageviews and referrers. Those versions should be treated as a baseline from that comparison, not as a promise that every current Umami release has identical requirements.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces
- Complete a wide range of applications with a high-performance motor that delivers up to 300 UWO, and an impact driver delivering up to 1,400 in-lbs of torque
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Because the available evidence does not provide a complete official Umami deployment specification, verify supported Node.js and PostgreSQL versions, architecture support, minimum memory, reverse-proxy expectations and upgrade instructions for the release you select.
What “lighter” means in practice
A lighter dependency set can reduce the number of services you monitor and the amount of storage and memory you reserve. It does not eliminate operational work. PostgreSQL still needs backups, access controls, updates and capacity monitoring. Node.js still needs a supported runtime and a controlled upgrade process.
Plausible’s documented stack can be a better fit when Docker is already standard in your environment and you want an established containerized installation path. It can be a poorer fit for an ARM-only device or a host without SSE4.2 support, regardless of how small your traffic is.
Dashboard and analytics depth
For basic traffic questions
If your questions are “How many visits did this page receive?” and “Where did visitors come from?”, either product can fit the stated use case. The comparative material specifically positions Umami around pageviews and referrers, making it attractive for a blog, documentation portal, brochure site or solo project that does not need a large event taxonomy.
Plausible also targets a deliberately simple dashboard. Its advantage is not a claim of superior raw performance; no independent benchmark comparing the two was found. The practical distinction is that Plausible’s documented product path extends further into conversion analysis when you need it.

Goals, events and funnels in Plausible
Plausible documents goals and custom events, with funnels, user journeys and revenue tracking available on higher plans. Those features let a team connect traffic to actions such as a signup, checkout completion or other defined conversion without adopting a full enterprise analytics suite.
The plan boundaries matter. Starter is described for one site and solo use. Growth is intended for multiple sites or team and client sharing. Business adds funnels, user journeys, revenue tracking, custom properties, the Stats API and Data Studio. Enterprise adds SSO, the Sites API, a managed proxy and raw-data exports. Plan names, limits and availability can change, so confirm the current plan page before designing around a particular feature.
Umami event requirements
The available comparison does not establish a complete, current Umami feature matrix. It describes Umami’s strength as straightforward pageview and referrer reporting, but it does not verify parity for Plausible’s goals, funnels, revenue, APIs or team controls. If an event-based workflow is essential, test the exact Umami release and document the implementation before migrating production reporting.
Privacy and data ownership
Self-hosting gives you control over the server location, retention policy, database access and backup destination. That can simplify internal data-governance decisions, but it also makes you accountable for protecting the data. Restrict database access, keep operating-system and container images patched, encrypt backups and define who can view analytics.
Plausible’s stated privacy model is unusually explicit: no cookies, no personal data collection and no consent banners required for the documented implementation. Those statements describe Plausible’s product design, not a blanket exemption from every privacy or electronic-communications law. Your site’s other scripts, identifiers, consent choices and regional rules can still create obligations.
Umami should be evaluated with the same discipline. Confirm what identifiers are collected, how IP addresses or other network data are handled, what retention controls exist and whether your configuration changes the privacy outcome. Self-hosting alone does not make an analytics deployment compliant.

Hosted versus self-hosted cost
What the published examples actually show
A current third-party comparison reports Plausible Cloud starting at $9 per month for 10,000 pageviews. The same comparison reports an InstaPods Umami self-hosted offer at a flat $7 per month. These are examples tied to a provider and a point in time, not universal prices or a guaranteed total cost. Recheck both offers before purchase.
| Cost component | Hosted service | Self-hosted deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Software subscription | Recurring plan price; Plausible plan limits and prices can change | Community Edition software is free; verify the current Umami license for your chosen release |
| Server | Included in the managed service | VPS, dedicated machine or existing hardware; cost depends on capacity and provider |
| Backups and security | Plausible Cloud provides managed backups and security | Operator designs, pays for and tests backups and security controls |
| Maintenance time | Cloud maintenance is handled by the provider | Operator performs upgrades, monitoring, incident response and capacity planning |
| Scaling | Usually linked to plan or pageview limits | Linked to the chosen server and the operator’s scaling work |
For predictable, low traffic, a fixed server bill can be cheaper than a pageview-metered plan. For irregular traffic or a team without systems-administration time, the labor and incident risk can outweigh the subscription difference. Include backup storage, monitoring and your own hourly value when comparing totals.

Plausible Cloud provides managed infrastructure, backups, security and maintenance. Its documentation says updates arrive multiple times per week. That is a meaningful benefit when you want current fixes without scheduling container and database work yourself.
Community Edition trade-offs
Plausible Community Edition is the free, self-hosted AGPL release. The operator, rather than the vendor, handles installation, maintenance, upgrades, server capacity, uptime, backup, security, stability and consistency. A free license therefore does not mean zero operating cost.
How to choose before you deploy
- Write down the reports you actually need. If pageviews, referrers and a few top pages cover the job, start with the lighter path. If you need funnels, revenue, user journeys or custom properties, map each requirement to a documented plan or a verified Umami capability.
- Check the machine. For Plausible, confirm x86_64, SSE4.2 and Docker. For Umami, confirm a supported Node.js 18.18+ and PostgreSQL 12.14+ combination, then check the current release notes for additional requirements.
- Decide who owns incidents. Choose hosted service when you do not want to patch, back up and restore analytics. Choose self-hosting when data location and control justify that responsibility.
- Model traffic and growth. Compare the pageview allowance and recurring price of a hosted plan with a fixed server bill, backup storage and maintenance hours.
- Plan migration and retention. Define how long reports must remain available, where exports will live and how you will recover if the server or database is lost.
Deployment checklists
Plausible Community Edition checklist
- Provision an x86_64 server and verify SSE4.2 support before installing anything.
- Install and secure Docker using the host distribution’s supported method.
- Choose the analytics domain or subdomain and confirm that you can edit its DNS records.
- Follow Plausible’s current Docker deployment documentation for the release you intend to run; do not substitute an unverified compose file.
- Configure HTTPS, restrict administrative access and place database credentials in protected secrets rather than source-controlled files.
- Set a tested backup schedule for the database and configuration, then perform a restore rehearsal.
- Install the tracking snippet, verify that pageviews arrive and check that the hostname and timezone are correct.
- Record the upgrade and rollback procedure before inviting other users to depend on the dashboard.
Umami checklist
- Confirm the current Umami release’s supported Node.js and PostgreSQL versions; the comparative baseline is Node.js 18.18+ and PostgreSQL 12.14+.
- Provision the database with a dedicated account, least-privilege access and automated backups.
- Deploy the application behind HTTPS and a reverse proxy appropriate to your host.
- Apply the release’s documented environment variables and migration steps rather than copying settings from an older version.
- Install the tracking script and test pageviews, referrers and any events you require.
- Monitor application logs, database growth and failed backups.
- Document upgrades, schema migrations and rollback options before production traffic depends on the system.
The checklists intentionally avoid invented commands: both products change their installation details, and the current release documentation should control the exact syntax.

Common failure modes
The server cannot run Plausible
On ARM-only hardware or a CPU without SSE4.2, the documented Plausible Community Edition requirement is not met. Move to a compatible x86_64 host rather than trying to mask the architecture.
DNS works but the dashboard is unreachable
Check that the record points to the correct public address, that the host firewall allows the required web traffic and that the reverse proxy presents a valid certificate for the exact hostname. DNS propagation and cached records can make a recent change appear inconsistent.
Pageviews are missing
Inspect the rendered tracking script, browser network requests, hostname filters, ad-blocking behavior and server logs. Test with a clean browser session and a page you control. A successful page load alone does not prove that the analytics request reached the server.
Upgrades break reporting
Take a database backup before every upgrade, read the release-specific migration notes and keep a rollback image or package path. Never treat a production analytics database as disposable simply because the dashboard is small.
The “free” deployment becomes expensive
Recalculate server, backup, monitoring and labor costs after the first few months. If nobody owns patching and restore tests, a managed plan may be the safer financial decision even when its sticker price is higher.

| Situation | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Solo blog or small documentation site needing pageviews and referrers | Umami | The comparison presents it as the lighter path for this focused workload. |
| Marketing site that needs goals and custom events | Plausible | Those capabilities are explicitly documented, with deeper conversion features on higher plans. |
| Team that does not want to run servers | Plausible Cloud | Managed infrastructure, backups, security and maintenance are included in the hosted service. |
| Organization requiring data to remain on its own infrastructure | Either self-hosted option | Both can be self-hosted; choose based on verified requirements and the reports you need. |
| ARM-only or pre-SSE4.2 hardware | Umami, subject to current support | Plausible’s documented Community Edition prerequisite is x86_64 with SSE4.2. |
| SSO, advanced APIs, revenue tracking or user journeys | Plausible plan review | Plausible documents these capabilities by plan; verify an equivalent Umami feature before switching. |
Verdict
Choose Umami when operating simplicity, a small footprint and basic traffic reporting are your priorities. It is the sensible first deployment for a small, privacy-conscious site whose owner can manage a Node.js and PostgreSQL service and wants maximum control over data location.
Choose Plausible when conversion reporting or a managed experience justifies a broader stack or subscription. Its documented goals, events, funnels, user journeys and revenue features provide a clearer growth path for marketing and product teams, while Cloud removes much of the maintenance burden. Plausible Community Edition remains viable when your host meets the x86_64, SSE4.2 and Docker requirements and you are prepared to own operations.
There is no evidence-based universal performance winner: no independent benchmark or adoption study comparing the two was established. The winning choice is the one whose verified requirements, reports and operating model match your site.
