Neither planar magnetic nor dynamic headphones are automatically better, more comfortable, or harder to drive. Planar models are often associated with strong bass extension and can weigh more, but those are tendencies—not guarantees. Compare the particular headphones’ tuning, fit, construction, sensitivity and impedance, then check whether your intended source can provide enough output.
How planar magnetic and dynamic drivers work
A dynamic headphone driver uses a voice coil attached to a diaphragm, usually shaped as a cone or dome. When current flows through the coil, it moves the diaphragm to produce sound. In a planar magnetic driver, conductive traces are spread across a flat diaphragm suspended between magnetic arrays; the magnetic field moves the diaphragm.

These are different ways to move air, not reliable labels for a headphone’s overall sound. RTINGS notes potential planar strengths such as bass extension, but also emphasizes that build quality and manufacturer precision affect performance. Its comparison, rewritten July 4, 2025, discusses model-specific trade-offs rather than establishing a universal winner: RTINGS’ planar magnetic vs. dynamic comparison.
What sound differences should you expect?
Planar designs are often associated with good low-bass extension, but that does not mean every planar sounds bass-heavy, neutral, or detailed. Nor does a dynamic driver guarantee warm, punchy sound. The tuning and execution of each model matter more than the category name alone; the supplied evidence does not establish a controlled listening result isolating driver type while holding tuning and construction constant.

- Open-back architecture: Spacious, natural soundstage with clear separation across bass, mids, and treble
- On-cable full-band MEMS boom microphone: Accurate voice pickup with a wide 20Hz–20kHz response and high SNR for clean, lifelike communication
- Broad compatibility and plug-and-play convenience: 4.4mm balanced plug included, plus 3.5mm and 6.3mm single-ended plugs, and a USB-C adapter for seamless compatibility with DACs, amps, PCs, consoles, and mobile devices
- Premium build for durability and comfort: Soft, eight-level adjustable headband, robust metal frame, and hinges, and sleek earcup with signature ROG elements
When comparing two headphones, consider their measured or published frequency response and whether you like the tuning. Also look at bass extension and impact, distortion, and channel matching where reliable measurements are available. Listening preference is personal, so a driver label cannot tell you which one you will enjoy more.
Are planar headphones heavier or less comfortable?
Weight varies by model, and weight alone does not determine comfort. RTINGS’ 2025 examples include the 580 g Audeze LCD 2 Classic and 394 g HiFiMan Sundara 2020, alongside the 260 g dynamic Sennheiser HD 660S2. These are individual product examples, not averages for either driver type.

- A Major Upgrade of the Popular Edition X: The new Edition XS expands on its predecessor’s achievements with several essential upgrades. Featuring Stealth Magnet Technology and the company’s NEO supernano Diaphragm, the Edition XS produces a wide, natural soundstage that puts the listener in the best seat in the house. Edition XS from HIFIMAN brings the depth and range of well-recorded music to an affordably priced headphone.
- Acoustically Invisible Stealth Magnet: Unlike the sound waves created by a conventional magnet, the special shape of Stealth Magnets enables the waves to pass through the magnets without generating interference. HIFIMAN’s advanced magnet design is acoustically transparent, dramatically reducing wave diffraction turbulence that degrades the integrity of the sound waves. The reduced distortion yields pure sonic output that is accurate and full-range.
- HIFIMAN’s NEO “supernano” Diaphragm (NsD): The new NsD is 75% thinner than previous designs, resulting in fast response and detailed imaging with lush, full range sonics.
- The Headband: The light weight, ergonomically accurate offers maximum comfort for hours of listening pleasure. The exterior is refined matte black material, and the interior features high-grade memory foam for the most comfortable fit and elasticity. The headphone’s structural design supports overall durability that retains its comfortable fit for years of enjoyment.
- The Cable: HIFIMAN’s new 3.5mm sockets are similar to those found on most common audio devices. The supplied 3.5mm cable is user changeable and replaceable.
Fit also depends on clamping force, pad shape, headband design, and how the headphone sits on your head. For long sessions, try to assess those factors as well as the listed weight. FiiO says the FT5’s magnet placement and magnesium-aluminum construction are considerations in its comfort design; that is a manufacturer description, not a category-wide finding.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo planar magnetic headphones need an amplifier?
No—not automatically. Whether a headphone reaches your preferred listening level depends on its sensitivity, impedance, and the output capability of the device powering it. Audeze explains how sensitivity, amplifier output, and impedance contribute to whether a headphone is driven adequately. Sensitivity relates sound-pressure level to a specified input; impedance describes opposition to supplied voltage. Check the exact headphone and source rather than buying an amplifier just because the driver is planar.

Sennheiser describes 16–64 Ω as typical for small portable headphones and 150–300 Ω as typical for high-end or studio headphones, but cautions that these ranges are guides and results vary by model. They are not universal compatibility rules. A headphone’s impedance by itself does not establish whether a phone, laptop, portable player, or amplifier will drive it sufficiently.
A model-level example: FiiO FT5
FiiO lists the FT5 as having a 90 mm planar driver, 36 Ω impedance, and sensitivity of 110 dB/1 Vrms at 1 kHz (equivalent on FiiO’s page to 96 dB/mW at 1 kHz). FiiO says it can be driven by portable players. Those are manufacturer-published specifications and guidance, not a general claim about planar headphones: FiiO FT5 product page.

In practical terms, start with the source you intend to use. If it reaches your normal listening level without distortion or an uncomfortable volume setting, a separate amplifier may not be necessary. If it cannot provide enough clean output, an amplifier with suitable output for that specific headphone may help—regardless of driver type.

Driver type does not determine whether a headphone is open-back or closed-back. RTINGS notes that open-back headphones leak sound and provide poor isolation; closed-back dynamic models are common for public use, and closed-back planar models also exist. Choose based on where you listen: open backs are less suitable when you need to keep sound in or outside noise out, while closed backs are generally the more practical direction for shared or noisy spaces.
Quick Recap
A practical way to compare specific headphones
- Decide where you will listen. Choose open-back or closed-back according to your need for isolation and how much sound leakage is acceptable.
- Compare the sound you want. Check frequency response, bass extension and impact, and credible distortion or channel-matching measurements. Do not infer these from the driver label.
- Check fit and weight. Compare weight, clamping force, pad shape, and headband design; if possible, try the headphones for yourself.
- Check the source pairing. Look up the exact model’s sensitivity and impedance, then assess the output capability of your phone, computer, portable player, or amplifier.
- Buy an amplifier only if needed. If your source cannot provide enough clean output at your normal listening level, consider a compatible amplifier. The need follows from the headphone-source pairing, not from planar construction alone.
