Start with the audience and the one message the video needs to deliver. Then turn that message into a short script, story beats, and a shot list before generating clips. This gives the team a shared reference for prompts, review, and editing—and a way to spot problems while they are still easy to fix.

What should the team decide first?

Agree on the purpose of the video before anyone opens a generation tool. Write down who it is for, what viewers should understand or do, and what the video must communicate. That single message is the test for every later choice: whether a scene belongs, whether a generated shot works, and whether the finished edit holds together.

Capture the decisions in a brief the team can refer to throughout production:

  • Audience and goal: Who will watch, and what should they take away?
  • Format and length: Where will the video appear, and what duration is appropriate for that use?
  • Tone and visual direction: What should the video feel like, and are there reference images or examples that clarify the intended look?
  • Required content: Which facts, phrases, scenes, or calls to action must be included?
  • Review responsibilities: Who approves the script, visual direction, brand details, and any legal or factual claims?

These are practical planning choices, not a universal template prescribed by a video tool. Their value is that they give collaborators a decision reference instead of leaving the brief buried in a long prompt.

How should you turn the idea into a story?

Draft the script around a clear arc

Give the video an opening that earns attention, a core section that develops the message, and a close that leaves viewers with a clear next thought or action. Adobe’s AI video guidance describes a hook, core message, and closing, and treats the script as a guide to scene flow and pacing. The exact structure can vary; the important point is to know what each part contributes before planning its visuals.

Divide the script into beats

A beat is a meaningful change in the story or in what the viewer needs to see. Split the script when the setting, subject, action, information, or emotional emphasis changes. A new beat does not automatically require a new shot, but it gives the team a useful unit for deciding what visuals are needed.

Runway’s storyboarding guidance recommends identifying beats and making a rough shot list before generating storyboard panels. Its longer-form guidance likewise recommends developing a concept and structured narrative before generation, then planning how individual clips connect. Treat these as workflow recommendations, not guarantees about a model’s output.

How do you create a storyboard and shot list?

A storyboard is a working plan, not a polished illustration requirement. It can be a simple list or rough panels. For every beat, describe the shot well enough that a teammate can understand its purpose and evaluate the result.

Planning note What to specify
Beat and purpose What this moment communicates and how it advances the video.
Subject and action Who or what is visible, and what changes or happens.
Setting and framing Where the shot takes place and what should be in frame.
Camera behavior Position, angle, and any movement that matters to the scene.
Look and atmosphere Relevant mood, lighting, or visual references.
Production notes Dialogue, timing, sound, continuity requirements, or approval notes the team needs.

Runway’s longer-video guidance commonly plans clips in the 5–10 second range. That is a recommendation within its workflow, not a universal technical limit or a promise that every model will produce clips of that duration. Decide shot length based on the beat and the edit rather than treating the range as a rule.

How should you write prompts from the plan?

Build prompts from the shot list instead of asking a model to invent the whole production at once. Keep the intended subject, action, setting, and motion aligned with the storyboard; add details in order of importance and revise when a generated result misses the shot’s purpose.

For text-to-video

Describe the visible subject and setting, what happens, relevant environmental movement, and the camera movement. Include timing when it materially affects the action. Runway’s text-to-video guidance emphasizes visual elements and motion; beginning with the essential elements makes it easier to see which instruction needs adjustment.

For image-to-video

Use an approved reference frame when composition or style needs to be established in advance. Since the image already guides those aspects, focus the prompt on the movement and camera behavior you want. Runway’s image-to-video guidance distinguishes this approach from text-to-video prompting.

Prompts are not substitutes for production decisions. If the team has not decided what a shot should communicate, adding more descriptive words is unlikely to resolve the underlying ambiguity.

Why generate a pilot before producing every shot?

Generate a small set of representative shots first: for example, one that tests the visual direction, one with important character or subject continuity, and one that will need to connect to another scene. Review each against the brief and storyboard:

  • Does it communicate the intended beat?
  • Does it fit the approved visual direction?
  • Will it connect plausibly to the surrounding shots?
  • Is anything essential missing or misleading?

If a shot falls short, decide whether the problem is the plan, the prompt, or both. Update the relevant part, then generate again before expanding the work. Runway’s Agent guidance says its results may be mistaken or variable and can require iteration; a prompt alone should not be treated as assurance of consistent or finished material.

How can a team make the workflow repeatable?

Once a sequence of steps works for the project, document the parts that should carry over: approved inputs, prompt conventions, file naming, review gates, and handoffs. Keep project-specific creative choices separate from reusable process rules, so a template helps the team start consistently without forcing every video into the same visual idea.

Runway describes Workflows as a node-based way to connect generation and utility steps, build reusable templates, and automate repetitive tasks. That is a documented example of workflow support, not evidence that automation produces identical creative results. Its Agent is documented as assisting with planning, scripts, storyboards, generation, and timeline editing; its outputs still need human review and iteration.

Which planning tool fits your team?

Choose based on the work your team needs to do and where it already happens. Product documentation describes capabilities, not independent comparisons of output quality, cost-effectiveness, or time saved.

Option Documented planning or workflow support Important qualification
Google Vids Its “Help me create” storyboard path can suggest an outline and scenes, generate text and media suggestions, and create a script and voiceover; the outline and draft can be edited. The help page says access requires an eligible Google Workspace subscription or trusted tester availability, and notes that limits can change. It is not universally available.
Runway Workflows Connects generation and utility steps in a node-based editor; supports reusable templates and automation of repetitive tasks. Best considered when the team needs connected, repeatable steps; it does not make creative outputs identical.
Runway Agent Can assist with planning, scripts, storyboards, generation, and timeline editing. Runway warns that results can be mistaken or variable and may need iteration.
Adobe Firefly guidance Provides vendor-published educational guidance on scripting and storyboarding practices. Use it as process guidance, not as comparative evidence about tool performance.
