What’s rolling out: AOD Media Controls and Timer on Pixel Watch
The update extends Pixel Watch’s Always-on display so you can interact with two common tasks without fully turning on the watch. Media Controls support playback-related actions when music or audio is running. Timer brings timer visibility and quick access to a timer while AOD is active.
Recommended Free Tools
Rollouts are typically staged—meaning you may see the update appear on your watch before someone else, or after. Even when your phone has the latest companion app version, your watch may still be waiting for the server-side enablement.

Why this matters (and what you can do with it)
Before this change, AOD mainly focused on showing time and essential info. With AOD Media Controls and Timer, your Pixel Watch becomes more useful in “glance mode,” where you don’t want to lift your wrist or tap repeatedly.
- Media Control in glance mode: Quickly see what’s playing and adjust playback without fully waking the watch each time.
- Timer visibility on AOD: Check countdown progress without switching away from the moment you’re in.
- Fewer interrupts: Timers and playback actions are faster when you’re busy (gym, kitchen, commuting).
Requirements and prerequisites
To get AOD Media Controls and Timer, you need the right combination of watch software and companion app support, plus AOD itself enabled.
- Pixel Watch running a recent system software version: The rollout is tied to Watch/OS updates and staged feature delivery.
- Pixel Watch companion app up to date: Keep the Pixel Watch app on your Android phone updated to the latest version available in Google Play.
- Always-on display turned on: If AOD is disabled, you won’t see AOD Media Controls or Timer.
- Compatible watch face/support: Some watch faces and display layouts show AOD elements differently. If you don’t see the controls, try a default face (like the factory watch faces) before assuming your watch doesn’t have the feature.
How to check whether your Pixel Watch has the update
Because rollouts can be staged, the fastest way to confirm is to check your watch’s software version and then check AOD settings for the new options.
Check your watch software version
- On your Pixel Watch, open Settings.
- Scroll to System (or About, depending on your UI).
- Tap System update or Software version.
- Note the version number and compare it to what you see in update rollout discussions or release notes when available.
If you’re unsure what to look for, search the software version after you note it—feature rollouts are often tied to specific Watch/OS builds.

- Open Settings on the watch.
- Go to Display or Screen.
- Tap Always-on display.
- Look for options related to Media controls and Timer (wording can vary slightly by build).
- Make sure any toggles are turned On.
Enable and configure AOD media controls and timer
Even if the rollout is active on your watch, you still need AOD enabled and the relevant display options switched on.
Turn on Always-on display
- Open Settings on your Pixel Watch.
- Select Display.
- Tap Always-on display.
- Set Always-on display to On.
Confirm media controls are allowed on AOD
- From the AOD screen, find Media controls.
- Toggle it to On.
- Start playback from a supported app (for example, YouTube or a music app) while wearing the watch.
- Let the watch fall back to AOD, then check for the media control area.
Confirm timer is available on AOD
- Go to Settings > Display > Always-on display.
- Find the Timer toggle and set it to On.
- Open Timer on the watch.
- Create a short timer (for example, 1 minute).
- Turn the display off/wait for AOD to appear, then verify the timer countdown shows on AOD.
How AOD media controls work
AOD media controls are designed for quick interaction while you keep the display in low-power mode. The watch must be actively receiving playback state from the phone or the currently connected audio session.
What you should expect to see
- Playback state (playing/paused) while AOD is active.
- Fast actions (for example, previous/pause/next, depending on your playback source).
- Controls that respond without you fully waking the watch every time.
Test with a known audio session
To validate it quickly, start a playback session from a consistent source (streaming apps you frequently use). Then:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Start playback on your phone (or on the device connected to the watch).
- Wait for the watch to show AOD.
- Look for the media controls region on AOD.
- Tap play/pause controls from the AOD screen.
How AOD timers work
AOD timers keep countdown information visible even when the watch isn’t fully awake. That’s especially useful because you can monitor time without interrupting your activity.

- Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]
Create a timer and confirm it displays on AOD
- Open the Timer app on your Pixel Watch.
- Set a short countdown (for example, 00:30 or 01:00).
- Let the timer start.
- Wait for AOD to engage (don’t tap the display repeatedly).
- Confirm the countdown is visible on AOD and updates as time passes.
What happens when the timer ends
When a timer completes, the watch typically changes state and triggers a notification/vibration. Depending on your watch behavior settings, AOD may show a completed state before the watch fully wakes.
If you don’t see an end-state change on AOD, wake the watch manually and check the timer’s full screen for the completion alert.
Common gotchas and edge cases
- Battery saver behavior: Aggressive battery settings can reduce or alter display features. Check if power-saving mode is enabled.
- Watch face differences: Some watch faces show fewer AOD elements. If you can’t find the AOD media control area, try switching to another watch face temporarily.
- Playback source limitations: Media controls depend on the OS’s ability to receive playback metadata. Some obscure or custom audio flows may not populate the watch.
- Timer visibility can be context-dependent: If the watch is in a mode that changes display behavior (for example, limited notifications), the AOD layout may change.
- Staged rollout delay: Your watch can be fully updated and still not receive the server-side feature enablement immediately.
Troubleshooting when AOD controls or timers don’t appear
If the update is installed but AOD Media Controls or Timer aren’t showing, work through these steps in order. Each step fixes a different class of problem: settings, software state, and pairing/communication.

6) Check connectivity and Bluetooth stability
If your watch loses connection intermittently, AOD interactive elements can fail to reflect current media/timer state.
- On your phone, confirm the watch shows as connected in the Pixel Watch app.
- Toggle Bluetooth off/on on the phone.
- If it’s still failing, perform a watch restart again after reconnecting.
7) Factory reset is a last resort
If none of the above works, you can consider a factory reset, but only after backing up what you need in the Pixel Watch ecosystem. A reset is disruptive and shouldn’t be the first move during a staged rollout.

Do I need a specific Pixel Watch model to get the AOD Timer?
The feature is aimed at Pixel Watch devices that meet the rollout’s software requirements. If your watch is too far behind on updates, you may not see the AOD options.
Why do I see the timer, but not the media controls on AOD?
Media controls depend heavily on the active playback session providing metadata. Try starting playback again, then check AOD after the watch fully returns to always-on mode.
Can I use AOD media controls without wearing the watch?
AOD is designed for visibility while you wear the watch, and interactions typically require the watch to be active and correctly paired/connected. If you’re not wearing it or it’s disconnected, media controls may not appear.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWill this drain more battery?
AOD already runs in a low-power mode, but adding interactive elements can slightly increase activity when media/timers are active. If you notice reduced battery, review battery saver settings and ensure AOD brightness/schedules are reasonable.
Bottom Line
Pixel Watch’s AOD Media Controls and Timer rollout turns “glance-only” moments into something more useful—without forcing you to wake the watch for every check. If you don’t see the features yet, verify AOD is enabled, confirm your watch software state, update the Pixel Watch app, and re-test with an active playback session and a fresh timer.
Once enabled, AOD becomes a practical control surface for playback and time—especially during workouts, cooking, and busy days when you want information and actions in the same quick glance.
