For automatic song recognition, use Now Playing on your Pixel phone. To identify a song from your Pixel Watch, Shazam is the documented option for Wear OS. Google documents Now Playing as a Pixel phone feature, not a native Pixel Watch feature. The choice is about where and how you want to identify music—not a proven difference in accuracy.
Can you use Google Now Playing on a Pixel Watch?
Google documents Now Playing for Pixel phones; its support information does not describe a native Pixel Watch version. Pixel Watch support for music apps does not mean the phone’s passive song-recognition feature runs on the watch. See Google’s Now Playing instructions and Pixel Watch music-app guidance.

For a lookup you start from your wrist, Shazam is the documented choice: Apple says Shazam can be used on Wear OS devices. Availability can vary by watch model and region, so check the current listing on your watch before installing. Apple’s Shazam instructions for Android describe Wear OS support.

Automatic recognition and manual searches
Now Playing: passive detection on the phone
Now Playing uses an on-device music library to identify nearby songs. Results can appear in notifications, and you can review recent discoveries, favorite tracks, share them, or connect a music service. Google also describes manual searches through the Now Playing app, Quick Settings, a widget, or a lock-screen shortcut. Find the current directions in Google Pixel Phone Help.

Shazam: tap to identify, or use Auto Shazam on Android
For a standard Shazam lookup, open the app and tap its Shazam button. On Android, Auto Shazam can keep listening for matches while you use other apps and add results to your library. Shazam’s support for Wear OS documents watch-based identification, but does not establish that Auto Shazam runs continuously on a Pixel Watch. Check Shazam’s app page and Apple’s Android and Wear OS guidance for current availability.
What happens offline?
The offline workflows differ. Now Playing starts with an on-device song library; when it cannot recognize a track locally, Google says it may send a short digital audio fingerprint for a cloud search. Shazam can create a fingerprint while offline and try to match it once the device reconnects, provided the song is in its catalog. Apple explains this in its offline Shazam guidance.

Privacy and song history
Google says Now Playing does not send raw audio or background conversations to Google. When local recognition does not identify a song, a short digital audio fingerprint may be sent for a cloud search. Shazam says it does not save or store what it hears; identified tracks are saved to your library. These are product descriptions, not a direct comparison of every privacy setting. Google’s details are in its Now Playing help page, and Apple’s Shazam guidance is here.

How to identify a song from a Pixel Watch
- On the watch, open Google Play and check whether Shazam is available for your model and region.
- Install Shazam, open it on the watch, and initiate recognition when the song is playing.
- For unattended background recognition instead, use Now Playing on the paired Pixel phone and enable its notifications; that is the documented passive-recognition workflow.
A third-party app called Now On Wrist says it relays songs recognized by a phone to a Wear OS 3.0-or-higher watch. Its listing requires a phone with ambient recognition enabled and a compatible watch. It is a third-party bridge, not a native Google Now Playing feature; verify the current listing and compatibility before relying on it.

No accuracy winner is established by the cited product documentation: it provides neither a controlled head-to-head test nor comparable recognition-rate figures. Choose based on the workflow you need—passive recognition on a Pixel phone or a lookup initiated from a Wear OS watch.
