The Pixel Watch 5 is a modest step forward from the Pixel Watch 4, not a redesign. Google adds a newer processor, 64GB of storage, revised GPS hardware and new health and safety features, while keeping the familiar 41mm and 45mm cases and domed display. It makes the most sense for someone buying new who values those additions; a Pixel Watch 4 owner who is satisfied with their watch has less reason to switch.
What changed from the Pixel Watch 4?
Google announced Pixel Watch 5 on August 12, 2026, with general sales scheduled to begin August 20. The changes are concentrated in hardware and software rather than appearance.

What stays familiar: case, screen and compatibility
The Pixel Watch 5 comes in 41mm and 45mm sizes, with a recycled-aluminum housing and a domed Actua 360 AMOLED LTPO display. Google lists 320 pixels per inch, a 1–60Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits, protected by Gorilla Glass 5. Both case sizes are 12.3mm thick; the 41mm weighs 31.0g and the 45mm 36.7g, without a band.

It runs Wear OS 7.0 and supports Bluetooth 6.0, Wi-Fi, NFC, Ultra-Wideband and dual-frequency GPS. LTE versions are available, but carrier compatibility and local availability should be checked before purchase. The watch is rated 5ATM and IP68. Google lists satellite SOS communications, but emergency and satellite services can depend on location and service availability.

Google says most phones running Android 12.0 or later are compatible. Setup requires a Google Account and the Pixel Watch app. The box includes the watch, small and large Active Band sizes, a Quick Charge Dock and a Quick Start Guide; Google does not list a USB-C power adapter among the included items.
How do the 41mm and 45mm versions compare?
The larger version has a substantially bigger battery and longer manufacturer-estimated runtime. Choose based on comfort and case preference as well as how often you want to charge.

What are the GPS, health and Gemini improvements?
GPS claims and real-world context
Google says the Pixel Watch 5 delivers “2x greater GPS accuracy in the toughest environments.” That is a company claim based on an internal study of pre-production watches in July 2026, compared with Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro during sessions lasting three hours or less. It is not an independent benchmark. Google’s launch author, Munjal Shah, described it as the company’s “most accurate GPS route tracking for exercise.”
In its September 2026 review, TechRadar reported responsive GPS during its reviewer use, which included runs and hikes. That is a limited review sample, not a guarantee of equivalent performance for every user, route or environment.
Workout and sleep features
Google highlights an on-wrist strength-training experience, Google Health Coach workouts and adaptive recovery suggestions based on sleep and heart-rate variability. It also claims 15% more accurate sleep-stage detection than the prior generation. The launch materials do not establish independent validation or specify a population for that sleep figure, so it should be read as Google’s product claim.

Health Guardian and subscriptions
Health Guardian tools include breathing emergency detection and health trend tracking. Google says feature availability varies, and some functions require the Google Health app and/or Google Health Premium. Check which features are available where you live and whether a paid membership is required before treating them as part of the watch’s everyday value.

Gemini and contextual help
Google describes Gemini features such as Raise to Talk, contextual on-watch suggestions—including calendar information—and one-handed gestures. The company says core actions can be processed offline. Exact feature availability may vary by region and rollout.

TechRadar’s September 2026 review was positive about GPS performance, comfort and repairability, but identified battery life as a sticking point and raised concerns about reliance on premium Google Health features. The reviewer reported around 10 days of use across gym workouts, runs and hikes; GPS comparisons with Garmin and Apple watches were performed by another reviewer. Those observations describe a limited review period and should not be treated as a universal battery or accuracy result.

Should you buy the Pixel Watch 5 or keep the Pixel Watch 4?
Consider the Pixel Watch 5 if you are buying new
- You want Google’s current watch hardware, 64GB storage and stated processor improvements.
- You expect to use the new GPS, coaching, sleep or safety functions and have confirmed they are available in your region.
- You prefer the larger model’s higher battery capacity and longer manufacturer estimates, or want the smaller case for fit.
An upgrade is harder to justify if your Watch 4 still suits you
The Watch 5 keeps a familiar design, and the strongest performance and GPS numbers are Google’s own claims. If you do not need the new features and your current watch meets your needs, the evidence here does not establish a must-upgrade reason.
Compare the actual price and feature costs
Prices are time-sensitive. The Google Store US page showed a promotional $349.99 price, reduced from $399.99, on October 7, 2026. TechRadar listed its reviewed 45mm model at $429.99, £399.99 or AU$699 at review time; those are review-time figures, not a guarantee of current local pricing. TechRadar also listed Google Health Premium at $9.99, £7.99 or AU$14.99 per month at review time. Check your local store and subscription terms before deciding whether the paid features make sense for you.

Connectivity and services are not identical everywhere. Google’s support specifications list GPS, Galileo and GLONASS for the US, while the rest-of-world listing also includes BeiDou and QZSS; Japan additionally has FeliCa. LTE carrier support, satellite SOS and health features may vary by country. Verify local compatibility and availability rather than assuming every advertised function works in every market.
