The smoother choice depends on which phone you have now, whether the new phone is still at its setup screen, and which data matters most. Apple’s Move to iOS and Google’s Pixel transfer tools both move core information, but neither creates a perfect clone. Android-to-iPhone is tightly tied to initial iPhone setup, while Pixel 9 and newer phones offer more flexibility after setup. Messaging cleanup, cloud-only photos, passwords, eSIMs, app data and media such as books or PDFs are the areas most likely to require extra work.
The short answer: choose based on your starting phone and priorities
If you are moving from Android to iPhone, Apple provides a guided transfer through Move to iOS. It can bring over contacts, messages, photos, calendars, call history, WhatsApp content and other categories, but the automated process must be selected while the iPhone is being set up. An iPhone that has already completed setup must be erased to use that flow again.

If you are moving from iPhone to Pixel, Google provides cable and wireless routes. The exact categories depend on the iPhone, Pixel model and software mode. Pixel 9 and later can restore data after setup without a factory reset, and Google’s current guide says Pixel 10 and later can transfer most iPhone data, including passwords and passkeys, Wi-Fi networks, texts, photos, contacts, apps and calendars. Those capabilities are not universal across every Pixel generation or transfer method.
For either direction, keep the old phone until you have verified contacts, messages, photos and critical account access. Google’s switch checklist explicitly advises keeping the old phone throughout the process. There is no official comparative study showing that one ecosystem is objectively faster or easier overall.

What actually moves in each direction
Transfer tools copy selected categories; they do not reproduce every setting, app state or piece of local storage. A category listed as transferable can still depend on the connection method, device eligibility, operating-system version, storage and whether the information exists locally or only in a cloud service.
| Category | Android to iPhone | iPhone to Pixel |
|---|---|---|
| Contacts, calendars and account data | Apple lists contacts, calendars and email accounts. Google services can remain available by signing in on the iPhone. | Google’s table includes contacts and calendars, with availability varying by Pixel model and transfer mode. Google Account setup is part of the process. |
| Messages and call history | Move to iOS lists message history and SMS, plus call history. | Texts and call history are listed, but the exact availability differs between classic wireless, classic cable and upgraded modes. Some messages may take up to 24 hours to appear. |
| Photos and videos | Camera photos, videos and albums are listed. Photos stored in another cloud service may need separate handling. | Photos can transfer, but items held only in iCloud may require Google Photos syncing or Apple’s iCloud migration route. |
| Apps and app data | Some free apps may be matched when an equivalent exists in both stores and is compatible. Matching an app does not guarantee that its complete internal data moves. | Google lists apps for eligible transfer modes. Store availability, sign-in requirements and app-specific data still vary. |
| WhatsApp messages and media are included in Apple’s listed categories. | WhatsApp history is included in Google’s data table for supported methods and devices; check the current eligibility table before starting. | |
| Passwords, passkeys and Wi-Fi networks | Not presented as a universal result in Apple’s Android-to-iPhone list; plan to sign in again unless your exact setup confirms otherwise. | Google says Pixel 10 and later can transfer most iPhone data, including passwords, passkeys and Wi-Fi networks. Older Pixel generations and other modes may differ. |
| Music, books and PDFs | Apple says these must be moved manually. | Availability depends on the source, file location and transfer mode; do not assume purchased or locally stored media is cloned automatically. |
| eSIM and device settings | Support depends on the phones, carrier and setup path; verify before deleting the old phone’s cellular plan. | Google’s table distinguishes eSIM and device settings by method and eligibility. Carrier support remains a separate requirement. |
Before promising that a particular category will transfer, compare your exact phone models and software with Apple’s Move to iOS instructions or Google’s current Pixel data-transfer table. Those support pages change as new devices and operating-system versions are added.

Switching from Android or Pixel to iPhone
What Apple’s automated transfer includes
Apple’s Move to iOS flow can transfer contacts; message history and SMS; camera photos and videos; albums; files and folders; accessibility and display settings; browser bookmarks; email accounts; WhatsApp messages and media; Voice Memos; call history; and calendars. Some free apps can be matched when an equivalent is available in both stores and works with the feature.

Plan to locate those files or services separately rather than expecting Move to iOS to reproduce them. App matching also installs or identifies an equivalent; it is not a promise that every app’s local database, login session or subscription state will follow.

Start the transfer at the right time
- Leave the Android phone powered on and make sure the iPhone is at its initial setup process.
- On the iPhone, choose the Android transfer option when setup offers it, then install and open Move to iOS on the Android phone.
- Keep both phones nearby and powered. Follow the on-screen pairing instructions and select the categories you want to copy.
- Use a direct USB-C connection when the ports and phones support it, or use the wireless route. A cable is optional, not mandatory.
- Wait for the progress indicator to finish on the iPhone before opening other apps or separating the phones. Duration depends on how much content is selected.
- Complete iPhone setup, sign in to your accounts and download any apps or media that were not included.
If the iPhone has already completed setup, Apple says you must erase it and restart the setup flow to use Move to iOS. If you do not want to erase the phone, transfer content manually instead. An erase removes data already placed on that iPhone, so make a backup and confirm that nothing new on it is needed before proceeding.
Google services can reduce the amount you copy
Google’s Android-to-iPhone checklist recommends preparing your Google Account, backing up the Android phone, signing in on the iPhone, checking transferred contacts and messages, and downloading Google apps. You can leave Apple Photos or Calendar unchecked when appropriate: Google Photos and Google Calendar remain available on the iPhone after you sign in to the same Google Account. This is access through the cloud, not necessarily a local duplicate of every file.
Android-to-iPhone issues to anticipate
- Already-set-up iPhone: the automated route is no longer available without erasing the iPhone. Manual copying is the alternative.
- Cloud-only photos: photos that are not stored on the Android phone may not be in the transfer set. Confirm them in the relevant cloud app before wiping the old device.
- App differences: an Android app may have no iOS equivalent, may use a different account, or may not expose its Android data to iOS.
- Media files: music, books and PDFs require a separate, deliberate move.
- Accounts and security: banking, authenticator and work apps commonly require fresh sign-in or re-enrollment even when the app itself is available.
Switching from iPhone to Pixel
Prepare the iPhone before connecting it
- Keep the iPhone available and backed up. Do not trade it in or erase it yet.
- Turn off iMessage and FaceTime. Google specifically calls out both services because leaving them active can interfere with receiving messages on the Pixel.
- Check free storage on the Pixel. Google says a transfer can pause when the Pixel does not have enough room for the selected content.
- Review whether the phone is managed by an organization. Work or school management can restrict copying or account changes.
- Check your exact Pixel generation and software against Google’s transfer table. The classic wireless, classic cable and upgraded modes do not expose identical categories.
Choose cable or wireless transfer
Google supports both a direct cable connection and wireless transfer. A compatible USB-C cable can be useful when both phones accept the connection. Some older iPhones may need a Lightning-to-USB-C cable or a Quick Switch Adapter. Google says Pixel 9 and later do not include the adapter, so accessory compatibility must be checked rather than assumed. Wireless transfer remains an alternative when the required cable or adapter is unavailable.
- Start Pixel setup, or open the supported transfer/restore option if your Pixel model allows transfer after setup.
- Connect the iPhone by the compatible cable, or select the wireless method shown on the Pixel.
- Approve the connection and choose the data categories offered for your model and method.
- Keep both phones powered and nearby until the Pixel reports completion. Large photo libraries and message histories take longer than a small contact transfer.
- Sign in to your Google Account and install any apps that were not included. Recheck messaging, photos, calendars and account access before resetting the iPhone.
Post-setup flexibility is a Pixel advantage, but not a universal one
Google documents post-setup restoration on Pixel 9 and later without requiring a factory reset. That is useful if you have already configured the new phone or want to start using it before moving the remaining data. It does not mean every category can be added later, nor does it apply to every older Pixel. Follow the options shown for your specific device.
Best Value
- Google Pixel 10 is the everyday phone unlike anything else; it has Google Tensor G5, Pixel’s most powerful chip, an incredible camera, and advanced AI - Gemini built in[1]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works - Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- The upgraded triple rear camera system has a new 5x telephoto lens - up to 20x Super Res Zoom for stunning detail from far away; Night Sight takes crisp, clear photos in low-light settings; and Camera Coach helps you snap your best pics[3]
- Pixel 10 is designed - scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and has an IP68 rating for water and dust protection[21]; plus, the Actua display - 3,000-nit peak brightness is easy on the eyes, even in direct sunlight[4]
iPhone-to-Pixel issues to anticipate
- iMessage still enabled: texts may continue routing through Apple’s service instead of arriving normally on the Pixel. Turn off iMessage and FaceTime before judging the transfer.
- iCloud-only photos: Google says these may need to be downloaded or synced with Google Photos, or moved through Apple’s iCloud migration tool.
- Insufficient storage: free space on the Pixel must cover the selected content. Reduce the selection or create space before retrying.
- Delayed messages: Google’s troubleshooting guidance says messages can take up to 24 hours to appear in some cases.
- Managed devices: organization controls can block data copying or account changes.
- Method-specific categories: passwords, passkeys, eSIM, notes, files, apps and WhatsApp history can differ between wireless, cable and upgraded modes.
Which direction involves less setup risk?
| Decision point | Android/Pixel to iPhone | iPhone to Pixel |
|---|---|---|
| Best time to start automated migration | During the iPhone’s initial setup. A completed setup requires an erase to repeat the automated flow. | During Pixel setup, with post-setup restoration available on Pixel 9 and later according to Google. |
| Messaging cleanup | Move to iOS handles listed message history and SMS categories; app and account behavior still needs checking. | Turn off iMessage and FaceTime before switching. |
| Cloud-photo complication | Confirm that photos needed for the move are actually on the Android phone or available through the relevant cloud account. | Photos held only in iCloud may require Google Photos syncing or Apple’s iCloud migration route. |
| Manual media work | Music, books and PDFs are explicitly manual in Apple’s guidance. | Files and media depend on source location and the Pixel transfer mode; verify rather than assume. |
| Accessory requirement | Wireless transfer is available; a compatible USB-C connection is optional. | Wireless is available; older iPhones may need a compatible Lightning connection or adapter for wired transfer. |
That makes iPhone-to-Pixel the more forgiving direction when the Pixel is a supported recent model and you have already begun setup. Android-to-iPhone is straightforward when the iPhone is new or freshly erased, but the setup-stage requirement creates a bigger penalty for starting in the wrong order.
A verification checklist before you erase the old phone
- Contacts: search for several recent contacts, including one with a phone number and one with an email address.
- Messages: confirm recent one-to-one and group conversations, then send a test message from another device.
- Photos and videos: check recent shots, older albums and any cloud library you rely on.
- Calendars and reminders: verify future events, repeating events and shared calendars.
- WhatsApp: open important conversations and confirm that expected media is present.
- Accounts: sign in to email, banking, work and subscription services; do not assume an installed app is already authenticated.
- Security: test your password manager, passkeys, authenticator codes and recovery methods.
- Cellular service: place a call and send a text. Confirm eSIM activation before removing the old plan.
- Files and media: open PDFs, documents, music and books that matter to you.
- Backups: retain the old phone and its backup until the new phone has passed these checks.
How to choose between the ecosystems
Choose iPhone when your priority is a clean, guided first-time setup
Move to iOS gives Android users a single Apple-led checklist and a defined set of categories. It is a good fit if the iPhone is still unconfigured and your key data consists of contacts, SMS, camera photos, calendars and supported WhatsApp content. Expect a separate plan for music, books, PDFs, incompatible apps and account reauthentication.
Choose Pixel when you value Google services or post-setup flexibility
A Pixel is a natural fit when your photos, calendars, contacts and other information already live in Google services, because signing in can restore access without treating every cloud item as a one-time cable copy. Pixel 9 and later also provide a documented post-setup restore path, while newer Pixel 10 models have broader listed support for passwords, passkeys and Wi-Fi networks. Confirm that your exact model qualifies.
Choose based on the data you cannot afford to lose
If your decision hinges on a specific category—such as an iCloud photo archive, WhatsApp history, eSIM, passkeys or a specialized app database—check that category in the current device-specific table before buying or erasing anything. Transfer tools are broad, but their boundaries are more important than the number of categories in a marketing summary.
Final verdict
Switching is easiest when the new phone is at the correct setup stage, the old phone remains available, and you verify category support before starting. Android-to-iPhone has a capable guided flow but is least flexible after iPhone setup is complete. iPhone-to-Pixel requires the extra iMessage and FaceTime step, yet supported recent Pixels offer more freedom to restore after setup. In both directions, cloud-only content, app data, passwords, eSIMs and manually managed media determine how much work remains. The practical winner is therefore the ecosystem that matches your starting phone and the data you need to preserve—not a universal winner for every switch.
